David Button next seasons no.1?

  • I think there's more chance of Jenson Button being our no 1 next season than David
  • Ben Hamer is a better keeper - not impressed by button
  • Button is a useful keeper in my opinion. I do think Hamer is the better shot stopper, but Hamer was making a lot of mistakes of late and was feeling untouchable (blaming his defenders for clangers he made) and i think making him wake up and dropping him will make him realise he is not a guaranteed starter, so will hopefully make him concentrate more. Hamer is and will be a great goalkeeper for us. he just needs to concentrate going forward.

If our strikers and midfielders were to score more goals then this would take less pressure off of Hamer and Button. We can't just blame Hamer or Button for our bad form.
  • If at all possible Sullivan's loan to the wombles needs cancelling and he needs to be between the posts at the Valley on 30th. Hamer and Button have both cost us too many points, Button on Saturday was poor. Never understood how Sullivan has been treated. Seems to be a total blindspot with SCP - sadly not his only one.
  • Have you seen Sullivan play for us???
  • Sullivan's keeping was instrumental in getting Wimbledon 3 points at the weekend.

That said I think Hamer is our best current option if only for the reason that he has, in theory anyway, a better understanding with the back 4 having been first choice for the larger part of 2 seasons.
  • Hamer is the better option because he is more of a complete keeper. Button is a bit slower and less mobile IMO - enough to suggest he won't be a top keeper whereas Hamer has the qulaities to achieve this. Yes, it was perfectly fair for him to be dropped and it was just as fair for Button to be given a chance - but I think for the benefit of getting the results we need, it is time for Hamer to return.
  • Just to record in this thread that Hamer conceded 4 in the U21 game against Brentford today.
  • Unless we start scoring some goals at home it won't matter who's got the shirt.

Sam Bartram conceded 6 when he made his first team debut I believe.

What we don't know is how many, if any, of those 4 were down to Ben.

Good point Len,I only wanted it mentioned because I felt some posters have been unfair on Button.

To repeat what I have said I want Button to complete the season and for them both to challenge for the shirt in Pre Season, for the record I suspect that Hamer will probably re emerge as No.1.

  • Hamer on top/normal form would be my preference.

Meanwhile, coming up on the rails, is Nick Pope. From today's Cambridge News: " It helps when you have a keeper as commanding as Nick Pope to back things up, with the result that confidence flows through the side. United appear to have struck gold in bringing in Pope, even if it is only for the rest of the season. He came for everything and, more importantly, held on to everything, even when under pressure from big Grimsby striker Andy Cook. To top it off, the Wicken youngster produced a fine save from Jamie Devitt’s vicious free kick in the 95th minute to ensure United held on for victory"
