Tour de France 2013

Having read 'My Time' last week, about Bradley Wiggins' 2012, I was curious to have a look at his odds for this years events, following a couple of his statements.

Indeed Le Tour is going to be a two horse race this year according to the bookies between Contador (6/4) who is currently a marginal favorite over Chris Froome (7/4) even at this early stage. Wiggins is 16/1 with Paddy Power and despite his yearning to win the Giro this year (you can't get much better than evens on that), a podium finish in the Tour de France must still be achievable @ 1/4 odds.

Did anyone get on any of these bets early doors, as I certainly missed the boat!

  • I would get on Richie Porte as the other Sky rider who is worth a bet on, in cracking form, and might be Froome back up in the mountains. Froome is favourite for me, Contador hasn't looked that good this season, must be missing the steaks.

As for Brad at the Giro, if he can put some serious time in on the TT on Stage 8, he'll probably have enough for the mountains the following week, and then finish it off on the second TT
  • Yes Porte is going well, interesting that Froome attacked him in the final stage of the Critérium with Porte leading overall a couple of weeks ago, just as he did Wiggins in the Tour last year. A bit of a loose cannon or a winner?
  • Think the plan was for Froome to win the races, and Porte said as much afterwards.

Froome is amazingly strong in the mountains, brutal turn of pace, almost like he's TT ing the climb.

  • Someone attacked in the CI, Porte could not respond & Froome went for it. There was no value for team sky in letting the other two attacking riders disappear and win the race. In theory Froome could have sat up later on, but why should he.

Froome appears to be the best rider, providing Sky stick by their decision to make him leader, then he should be favourite to win the tour. Perhaps a Sky one -two again with Porte.

I would have said Cancellera (as an outsider for a place) based on his performance in the Tour of Flanders at the weekend, he was bloody incredible and looks in sensationsal shape but rumour has it is that he doesnt want to ride the TdF to concentrate on other goals this season.

If you're looking for outsiders, Jurgen Van Den Broeck at 50/1 is a good shout for a place. Nibali at 40/1 too.

"Spartacus" looked the real deal last weekend at Flanders but I would not put him on the TDF podium, however Nibali is a good shout at 40/1
  • Don't think Nibbles will have the team to live with the Sky train, and I think they'll burn Contador off to given half a chance. Spartacus did look good at the weekend, but TT the last 15k in Flanders ain't going to win you a grand tour.

BTW, if you can find Cav's interview from today, it's amazing, proper strop on.
  • Have a feeling there may be a bit of
in- fighting amongst the sky team this year.
  • No Boonen?

  • No Boonen?

He crashed badly in Flanders. They're not sure he'll make it.
  • Porte has said he's happy with his Paris-Nice win for this year and is willing to help out Froome now hence him giving up the Critérium win the other week so there shouldn't be to much in fighting there.

As for Spartacus he will never be on the podium in the tdf as he doesn't do well in the mountains and is mostly a pure classics rider. But yes the last bit of the tour of Flanders was incredible and he'll probably do really well in the TT's at this year's tour if he goes.

I'm also looking forward to a Sagan V Cav battle as they'll both have proper lead out trains this year so the battle for green could be interesting.

Will be interesting to see how froome and wiggins get on and if any cracks in their relationship appear again.

We've got our flights booked, heading to Toulouse in early July, expect it to be even more packed than usual this year
  • Am backing Froome to win it this year.

Taking the missus for 4 days near Avignon whilst taking in the Ventoux stage....cannot wait.
  • Depends on how Brad performs in the Giro, if he wins that (and the big TTs play into that) he'll play second fiddle to Froome/Porte. If he doesn't he might go looking at the Tour, but that Froomey might decide to drop him and everyone else at the first climb, and its all sorted.

What would be nice would be a British winner starting the race in Leeds in 2014.
  • Got to love Sagan... ;)

  • Couldn't be bothered to start a new thread or anything but Cancellara is incredible, great win in Paris-Roubaix today. Looked a bit more tired than usual but still got the win.
  • Just getting into this cycling malarky.

    That race is brutal!

I used to really enjoy watching this but with all that's gone on in recent years (drugs) I really can't be arsed with it anymore.

Ha, just a bit. I really wouldnt want to be Sir Dave Brailsford.

  • Don't know anything about cycling but the bird carrying a cup that had no ends was mint they said its some race was not TDF but was a bike race
  • Am i missing something?, but why isnt Wiggo favourite again?
  • Am i missing something?, but why isnt Wiggo favourite again?

Good question. One of the more knowledgable blokes on here will be able to put us right but as far as I understand it, this years TdF is more suited to a climber, like Chris Froome, so it appears that he'll be leading Team Sky in the TdF. The organisers have also cut the time trials this year, something that Wiggo is more suited to.

I almost started dribbling when I saw her on SSN this morning. She was absolutely stunning. The Giro D'Italia started today, its the second biggest Grand Tour behind the TdF.
  • Am i missing something?, but why isnt Wiggo favourite again?

Primarily because he has said that he he's not aiming at the TdeF thus season preferring the Giro d'Italia (starting today) which lasts three weeks and is as tough a race as the TdeF. Between that race finishing and the TdeF starting he will have a month of recuperation. It's very tough to win both races in the season - and while there is some history of riders winning both events in the same season it's a tough ask. He has though made some contradictory statements initially saying that he would be happy to be Froome's super-domestique in the TdeF but more recently hinting that he too would be aiming to win. I don't think there's much love lost between them...

The last winner of the maglia rosa and the maillot jaune in the same season was the late and great Marco Pantani, a great cyclist and climber, but he was also artificially aided by industrial quantities of EPO.

  • Superbly timed sprint from Cavendish today to win first stage of the giro.

Only saw the last 10K but where was his lead out train? Cannondale and Orica-greenedge both had 2 other men to support there sprinters, Omega really need to sort that out in future stages. Just makes Cav's win even better, such a superb sprinter.
  • His lead out man at OPQ is Gert Steegmans.

Hard to tell what happened to him in this clip, certainly Cav came from a long way back, but on a straight flat finish this was ideal for him and he got out of jail, but his team certainly left him with a lot of work to do and he had to navigate his way around Steegmans.

There was some disquiet earlier in the season that for all their investment in a strong squad and in particular in hiring Cavendish that OPQ were short of a dedicated lead out team. A bit like signing a star centre-forward but not investing any money in a decent midfield to get him the ball. From the evidence of the video they haven't put that right.

  • Team Time Trial stage today on the island of Ischia.

A short stage and mostly flat although with enough twists and turns and street furniture to put the emphasis on team-work.

Anyway, a good win for Sky by 9 seconds, Bradley Wiggins is now in second overall and has 14 seconds on Hesjedal and Nibali while Mark Cavendish has to make do with the red jersey for being best points rider.
  • Sir Dave has confirmed Froome will lead Team Sky in the TdF.
