Few years ago there was a St Georges cross flag with a Charlton badge smack bang in the middle of the crowd from the main camera angle.
  • Oh but they have.

    Who ?

  • It makes me laugh when people just day "wrestling is shit and fake"

Of course it is - but so is most tv. It's entertainment.

If we all liked the same it would be a very boring world - but the fact remains these guys get paid MILLIONS a year because there is so much support and following and interest. As previously said its escapism.

Some people need to lighten up - if you don't like it then don't watch it AND don't open a thread which is so blatantly about the subject

My 12 year old has grown out of it! Says WWE has become silly and tries too hard to appeal to young kids. He likes TNA still though - says it is 100 times better. I took him in January to see them at Wembley and it was a decent enough show, although there is something slightly ridiculous about a scripted sport! And also some of the adult fans - sad doesn't go near enough to describe them!

There is clearly a demand for this though, and if I was in charge of ITV I'd sign TNA up!

    Swisdom

I was going to post something simliar but i got too into it and wrote things i shouldnt so i deleted it

If its not what music what larger what tv programme its what politics you should follow cant have a thread on here for like minded people to discuss without the pearls of wisdom being thrust upon you

I like the football disagreements on players tactics mgmt as we all have one common denominator

But it gets very tedious being spoken to like your a half witt with less of an opinion if ypu watch x factor wrestling etc
  • I don't understand why people open threads and comment on things they have no interest in.

Says a lot for the 500 odd posters who got involved with the Jimmy Saville thread.

Oooooh, now dont get me going on x-factor. !!!!!!
  • That was the worst wrestlemania I can ever remember, or maybe I'm just getting too old for it!

Indeed, nothing to do with age though. I'm glad that Mark Henry won.

They're just weirdo's I reckon. Honestly don't think I've ever opened a thread about something I dislike just to whinge that other people want to discuss it. Bizarre stuff.

This thread was so predictable I'm starting to think Charlton Life is scripted too. If it is, then the writers have done a more boring job of booking this thread than they did with Wrestlemania, and that's really saying something.

  • I wonder if these guys care if it's fake?

#1: The Rock Net Worth – $70 Million
#2: Steve Austin Net Worth – $45 Million
#3: John Cena Net Worth – $35 Million
#4: Big Show Net Worth – $30 Million
    #5: Triple H Net Worth: $25 Million
#6: Kurt Angle Net Worth – $20 million
#7: Chris Jericho Net Worth – $18 Million
#8: Shawn Michaels Net Worth – $17 Million
#9: The Undertaker Net Worth – $16 Million
#10: Mick Foley Net Worth – $15 Million

Not forgetting Vince McMahon whose shares in WWE are worth about 350m
  • Actually surprised at how little money The Undertaker, Shaun Michaels and Triple H have considering their status/celebrity.
  • They don't wrestle as much now (Shawn has retired) and their marketability is on the wane. Think of the amount of t-shirts people like Cena must sell compared to The Undertaker nowadays. Plus, whens the last time you saw them in a Movie? HHH was in a shit heap called the Chaperone, the other two I don't recall being in anything. The Rock is in 5-6 movies every year
  • Yeah the Rock is doing well in films, i think stone cold was in a couple of films too. Cena obviously sells the most merchandise. Surprised at the Big Show, how's he made so much money?

Hogan would be high up that list if he hadn't got divorced.
  • Where is Steve Austin? He needs to come back
  • Just looked it up, seems the Big Show has been in a few films and even more tv shows, so i guess that's how he's made so much
  • Shame that they make more money through films than wrestling but you only have to look at this thread to understand why. An even bigger shame that UK wrestlers only get paid £20 for a nights work!

He can't. He broke his neck after receiving tombstone piledriver from Owen Hart in 1998 but kept wrestling with it for another 5 years. He had to give up.

    Mankind

  • He went into the hall of fame the other night, along with the lovely Trish Stratus.
  • Mick Foley was an absolute legend and for those that say it's fake, yes it obviously is with regards to the result but the pain and injuries are very real read this:

In one of the most famous matches in professional wrestling history, Foley received numerous injuries and took two dangerous and highly influential bumps. The first one came as both wrestlers were brawling on top of the cell, and the Undertaker threw Mankind from the top of the cage from a height of 16 feet (4.9 m); (22 ft if including angle of the fall) and sent him crashing through the Spanish announcers' table, which triggered announcer Jim Ross to famously shout, "Good God almighty! Good God almighty! That killed him! As God as my witness, he is broken in half!".

Foley remained motionless underneath debris, while the Undertaker remained on top of the cell staring down. Terry Funk was the first person on the scene, followed by WWE's resident doctor, Dr. Pettit, and various others, including a concerned-looking Vince McMahon. Foley was placed on a stretcher and began to be wheeled out to the arena.

Moments later, there was commotion on the entrance ramp as Foley got up from the stretcher and proceeded to make his way back to the cage, climbing to the top of the cell, with the Undertaker doing likewise (this time they both climbed the cage surprisingly quickly despite Foley having suffered a dislocated shoulder due to the fall, and the Undertaker wrestling with a broken foot that night). With both men back on the top of the cell the match resumed.

Earlier as both were walking on the chain-link mesh which comprised the cell's ceiling, the metal fasteners were popping off causing the roof to sag and partially give way under their combined weight. According to Terry Funk, the prop guy had purposely designed it that way, except it was never meant to give way completely. In the second huge bump of the night, the Undertaker chokeslammed Mankind atop the chain-link mesh cage, causing a panel to give way completely, resulting in Foley falling through and hitting the ring canvas hard below. In response, announcer Jim Ross shouted, "Good God, Good God! Will somebody stop the damn match? Enough's enough!".

The cage giving way completely was a surprise to both Foley and the Undertaker. The Undertaker later said that he thought Foley was dead following the second fall. Foley was genuinely knocked unconscious for a few moments from the impact, but was able to come around. Terry Funk wrote in his autobiography, "Watching from the back, I thought he was dead. I ran out here and looked down at him, still lying in the ring where he'd landed. His eyes weren't rolled back in his head, but they looked totally glazed over, like a dead fish's eyes."

Some time after getting up and being attended to again by the aforementioned personnel, TV cameras showed a lingering shot of Foley smiling through his profusely bleeding mouth and lips, with a loose tooth hanging beneath his nose; the tooth having been knocked out due to being struck by the chair which had fallen through the cage and landed on his face, dislocating his jaw.

The match continued for a while longer, ending with Foley being chokeslammed by the Undertaker onto thousands of thumbtacks, which Foley himself, had strewn onto the ring canvas. Although Foley lost, both wrestlers received a standing ovation for the match, and the event is often said to have jump-started Foley's main event career
  • If you get the chance you should read Mick Foley's autobiography Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks. Widely regarded as the best book about the world of wrestling around. Bret Hart's is very good also.
  • I remember flicking through the channels and seeing that match which we couldn't turn away from. I thought he was dead as well, utterly shocking and a completely stupid thing to do. Believe it or not but there have been far worse, Sabu taping his bicep back together and fighting on being one. I'm glad that doesn't happen any more, although some retard is probably setting himself on fire in front of 12 people each month in some small hall in America.

Foley is a surprisingly good fiction writer as well. I read 'Tietam Brown' a couple of years ago, very dark and disturbing. It's cheap on Amazon or Ebay if someone fancies something a bit different to read. Despite the above (and much, more more) he's a really intelligent guy.
  • Abuse deflectors up, Earhole shields on standby. I'm going in.....
This is a serious question guys - i'm not being derogatory in any way towards your Sports Entertainment - and i'm a lot more sober than i was the other night !, but i honestly cannot see what the 'entertainment' or attraction is with Wrestling. I'm being honest in saying that whenever i switch on SKy Sports and find Wrestling , i find myself watching it for a couple of minutes and the cringeworthy scale starts to rise before i just have to get rid of it , to anything, fishing, marbles, tiddlywinks. I really cant bear to watch it.
Now, my love is cricket, and i think its the best Sport on the planet (and it is a sport) , but i know there are a lot of people out there who cant stand it - i just put it down to ignorance - so, am i being ignorant to Wrestling?
What is it ? - i dont get it ! I cant believe that it appears that so many people like it.
Being serious again, to me, and based upon some of the comments herein, maye Sky should have a Sports Entertainment channel and put real sports on the Sports channels ? What do you think.
    This is not a wind-up - serious question/thoughts.
  • On wrestiling books, Chris Jericho's A Lions Tale and Undisputed are both great books. I'd reccomend either of them but if you're only interested in his WWE Career skip Lions tale as undisupted starts at his debut.
