  • Auction some right bargains in there I have seen cars that would be private sale about 700 go for 300 in the last month you may only get 5-6 in ea h auction but if your there with your dough and have registered at the office before bidding you can get them
  • where abouts.and what days are these auctions held?
  • Put BCA into google and check there used to be a car auctions in Charlton don't know if it is still there but the car auction places are all over the place most days of the week especially sat
  • I had 51 plate focus last week for £250, try to get matey with a collection firm. They get some proper bargains. Failing that try this astonbarclay.net/en.aspx
  • when you say collection firm, who do you mean? sorry im a bit naive lol
  • When people no longer want their cars they get people to come and get them, the same people collect cars from people who owe money by means of paying off the debt. Some cars are taken away by the council for having no tax or mot or insurance. These dont all go to the crusher, make sure you get a DVLA approved company though.
  • There's shed loads of people doing the we but any car stuff at the min just find one and ring them they ain't buying them to keep they are boshing them on

be warned though for 600 quid you ain't going to get any warranty or particularly good car you going to get a bought as seen and a good chance in 6 months you will need another one

Whatever you do go with someone who knows what they are looking at and don't buy in the rain , In the dark or anywhere that ain't the address of the seller

Be warned if you don't pay attention you could buy a death trap
  • There are some absolute bargains out there to be had, but in my experience a 600 quid car is not going to be much good to you in a couple of months. If I were you I'd hang on a bit longer and save a bit more (if possible). Between 12-1500 quid you should get a decent 10 year or less motor with service history etc.
  • Ford KA is one of the cheapest to insure for young drivers, you should be able to pick one up under a grand actually.

  • Ebay is good if you know what you're looking for and can have a look before the auction ends. I bought my '95' peugoet 205 diesel with 85k for £250 last August. I've done 17k in it, Mot'd it after 6 weeks with no advisories. No breakdowns. Just done a 700 mile trip to cornwall this week. Some may laugh at the idea of an older car, but it does 100 on £10 on a run.

As for motor auctions i used to go in the past for every car, but many have huge indemnity charges, so even a car at £500 may have an indemnity of £300-400+ making it not much of a deal.
  • With your pot of money you are going to have to be very careful. As has been said, take someone who knows what they're doing. I've got a friend who buys and sells cheap cars, but I'm not sure he'd have any for 600 notes. Do you want me to call him?
  • This might be a daft idea but you might be able to pick up a "classic" car for not much money. Added bonus of free car tax if manufactured before 1/1/1973 plus specialist insurers do really cheap deals on classics as their data show that owners look after them and drive carefully. So, if the insurance was less, you could spend more on the car? Something like an ancient Beetle that needs a bit of TLC?
  • I'm selling a 2005 Vauxhall Corsa, 1.3 CDTI turbo diesel. 152000 miles on the clock. It's just failed its MOT, needs £200 work. Very good condition. Great little run about and only £30 tax a year. It gets over 500 miles out of a tank of diesel. PM me if your interested.
  • Group 3 insurance to so very cheap.
  • We're going back years here, but when my brother was in his late teens and twenties (late sixties, and throught the seventies to early eighties) you could nearly always get £50 scrap for any car.
So he always bought old bangers for a few hundred.
The trick was to get it MOT'd at sale (he would pay the fee if it passed, the owner had to take the hit if it failed, and it would be no sale), then third party only insurance. Always be a member of the AA/RAC (basically for servicing!...whenever it broke down), and there you go...on the road.
Now sometimes those motors lasted a couple of months, sometimes a couple of years, when clapped out you would get them scrapped.
It also meant you never worried about them being nicked, or dented like you would a new car.
There you go, always on the road, at a fraction of the cost for most people, and little stress or hassle...apart from the times when each car died (usually at some bleak spot on the A303)...then again relay would always get you home...or to the scrapyard.

  • Anyone remember that dodgy car yard from the '80's on the corner of Plumstead High st and Wickham lane ? Guess what, yep I bought a Dolomite Sprint from there. Everything was shouting out 'don't buy it you plum' (including Terry,Arfurs mate who was p*ssing himself after it hadn't started on the 8th attempt) But it was like I was being sucked in by a tractor beam. Luckily I bodyswerved/put on some teflon shoulder pads and flicked it on to an (ex)'mate'. 2 days into his ownership, one of the front wheels fell off. Then the head gasket blew and cooked the engine. When he was having a replacement engine fitted the techies noticed it was two cars welded into one .... you gotta hand it to 'em though,at least they'd changed the number plate at one end.
    So after that,my recommendation :-

I remember that place, almost got nicked there once when walking back from the Maybloom - my pissed up mate decided to sit in a convertible Triumph Spitfire, and an SPG van screeched to a halt to chase us down the road

My mate in the car....Jack Branning better known as Scotty Maslen
  • get this ~ cheap second hand motors dont seem to exist in china

masses of cheap crappy vw santanas here (taxis)... second hand 10 year old will cost you 4,000 sterling.

    mental...

idea of getting something decent for under 2k quids is unthinkable

i guess its due to the number of first generation drivers and cultural aversion to anything “used” (2nd hand shops/charity shops just dont work in china either).
  • I am a avid ford fan owning in the past rs fords xr4i's etc my current car is a fiesta st , However 18 months ago I needed a run about for work and bought from a private buyer 2000 W reg 1litre vauxhall corsa ( paid £670 ) this has been brilliant it is only group 2 insurance and does up to 53 mpg this is a better made car than any 13 year old fiesta and any one setting out on a low budget should consider a corsa as they do not suffer the rust problems of the KA or fiestas. However you should be prepared to budget for replacement of tyres exaust & battery if you own any car over a couple of years.
  • Listen to me! This is important!

Corsas and Fiestas are much more expensive than second hand Rover 200s of the same era, and are much inferior cars!

Rover 200s (1995+) come in a range of engine sizes from 1.1 to 2 litre and are dirt cheap due to MG rover's collapse. No, parts are not expensive because they sold millions of them (including the rover 25 and MG ZR).

They come with a K-series engine which are very smooth and very nippy, and far better than the rubbish in similar corsas and fiestas

    Just my thoughts.

And entirely valid ones. I had an Audi stolen a few years back and while I was sorting out the insurance payout (the car was written off by the bloke that stole it when he rammed a police car) I bought a 1.4 MG ZR just to get me around for a few months while the new motor was on order. I was pleasantly surprised by how acceptable it was and I was a little sad when I got rid of it. Only slight drawback was that it only seemed to do a little over 30mpg, which for a small car with a small engine, I thought was pretty shocking.
  • Selling my MGFT 2004 1.6cc 116 Sunstorm (in silver) with genuine 42,500 miles, FSH with extra matching hardtop, MOT til October and taxed to 31 August...............for £1750 to any Charlton fan. Really nice car.
  • Meant MGTF, of course!
  • I've used ebay for my last two runarounds.

There really are some bargains to be had - you just have to screw your loaf - use private buyers such as someone emigrating or just upgrading their second car, check feedback, check grammar, check they've never sold a car or car parts before, go with gut feelings and preferably buy with tax and MOT.

Got an astra estate for £475 used for a couple of years with hardly any repairs, flogged it as spares/repair in the end for £120 - really got my money's worth.

Bought a little Daihatsu last year for £550. Bought new front brake pads, spent nothing else. Passed MOT with one advisory. Nippy in cities/towns, 850cc engine, so not so keen on hills and boring and a bit like being on the high seas when on motorways, BUT, new year travelled from Penzance to Hackney, stopping off in Bristol:

    Total fuel cost: £33!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Has anyone had a Dacia? Thoughts?

Not expecting luxury but seem to be a decent price for age/mileage but first hand reviews would be good!
