Had a fantastic time in Sao Paulo and Florianopolis area last year (yes, OK, bad timing!) Wasn't expecting much of SP, but actually loved it - could not believe just how friendly the people were in a city over twice the size of London. True that it is pricey, but the metro is much improved - we found it very efficient. It's such a mixed country that you don't stand out as a tourist - they just assume you are Brazilian and start nattering away to you in Portuguese. Even if you manage to say you don't understand, they'll still just carry on! We stuck to the more central areas, plus around Interlagos for the Grand Prix, and took in a couple of domestic football matches - did not feel unsafe/ threatened at all. Would love to go back for the WC - enjoy it, those of you lucky enough to get there!
Was in Rio for the WC '86 (OK, know it was in Mexico), fantastic atmosphere every time Brazil played and won - really struggled to get a taxi to the airport straight after their defeat to France, as I left all the Brazilians assured me that we would win it now they were out. Just made it back to a mates in Barnehurst to watch us vs Argentina
Shame is so expensive now, first holiday that I came back with cash - everything, hotel, food and drinks, taxis - cheap as chips.
Nearly got mugged, decided to take pictures of a deserted (nearly) Copocabana beach during a Brazil game, apart from that ricket, no problems whatsoever, very friendly place.
