Watford substitute keeper Jack Bonham

Gotta feel for the lad. I'm not a lover of Watford (to say the least) but the young keeper was devastated and that was probably his worst nightmare. It's things like that make you realise that being a professional footballer can be a lonely and unforgiving place.
Genuinely hope the lad bounces back from this.

    Desperately unlucky for Watford to lose one keeper before the start of play (Almunia) then lose their 2nd (Bond) to a serious injury. It's hard enough for any player to make their debut (like Pope did yesterday) but to do so in such a key match was doubly tough.

    It wasn't unlucky, it was Dirty Leeds being dirty. Their lad pushed the defender into the keeper, causing a serious injury. Completely missed by the ref (along with a clear pen from a Michael Brown foul) and of course, The Football League Show. I'm no fan of Watford but they were done by Leeds & the ref yesterday. If that had been us I'd've exploded by now.

    Spot on.

    That second yellow could have been a straight red. He has ability but clearly doesn't have the temperament to play at a higher level.

    That'll be a reference to Lee Harmsworth away to Man City, last game of 1985. Lost 5-1 in front of 47,000 screaming City fans (they had to win to go up) and young Harmsworth froze for City's 4th as Paul Simpson walked it round him. It's on youtube somewhere.

    Oh yes, I remember. One of the London evening papers- we had two then- splashed his foto with the caption of "the man who stands between City and promotion". He was 17, and hardly any of us had ever heard of him.

    I think we had to recall him from an outward bounds course in Wales or somewhere.

    Don't think he played for us again.

    Fella yesterday reminded me of him - the look of horror on his face.

    You're right about the Outward Bounds course!!!! I'd forgotten that!

    I met Lee at work in the early 90's and he thought he had made his debut v Man City. Poor kid was still probably shell-shocked because I had to remind him that City was his last game of the three he played (debut at Carlisle on a Friday night 1-1 and home to Oxford 3-3 were the others).

    Unfair amount of pressure for a young lad. Would have done him a lot of damage. Hope he recovers.

    Jack Bonham has represented Rep of Ireland at various youth levels, so he really should have done better on Saturday. He is 19 and numerous keepers have made league debuts at 19 or even less - it's not that young anymore and he is a pro-keeper after all.

    He wasn't even expecting to be in the squad, let alone play. He was upgraded from the stands, to the bench and then to the pitch so I can understand him being nervous and unprepared. Add to that Watford desperately needing to win to secure promotion and I think you can see why nerves got to him.

    Think we molly-coddle youngsters some times. Keeper's need to experience some rough times....it goes with the job. If he's good enough he'll be ok and if he's weak then he's not good enough. The good players are the ones who don't let mistakes worry them for too long. It's not as if this lad won't have any help from the coaching staff at Watford. In Nicky John's day there was no such thing as a goal-keeping coach....he just had to get on with it with the reserve keeper.

    TBH The first goal wasn't his fault really because our defender failed to make a decent clearance and the 2nd was a mess BUT we needed another goal anyway..

    I agree with the comment about Deeney being to blame..disappointing to see as he has been excellent.

    Shame - not sure we'll win the play-offs (Brighton I think)

    Still get a nice trip to your place.

    Super_horns Am I right in thinking the loop-hole regarding all the Udenese players will be closed for next season?

    If so, Zola has one hell of a re-building job on his hands this summer......................
