Fantastic domination of English football, maybe should have won another European Cup to put him past Brian Clough

and only equal with Bob Paisley who won it 3 times in 9 years compared to twice in 26 years. When it was a competition of real Champions not top 4 wannabees.
Real champions like Odense, who Liverpool put 11 past in 1980, as opposed to those wannabe runners-up Barcelona who Utd had to beat in 2008 to reach the final?

Bob Paisley was a great manager, but he inherited a pretty successful club from Shankly, one accustomed to winning trophies. Ferguson has built Man Utd into what it is today from a club that hadn't won anything bigger than the FA Cup since the 1960s. And when you add his achievements with St Mirren and in particular Aberdeen to the pot - Aberdeen!!!, who under Ferguson won the league 3 times in a row, the European Cup Winners Cup and the European Super Cup - I think it's hard to argue for Paisley over Ferguson if you look under the surface.

We will only see his like once more in our lifetime. Arise, Sir Chris of Powell...
  • I recall Lennie Lawrence being widely ridiculed in 1988 or thereabouts after saying that Ferguson had the hardest job in English football and was doing an outstanding job. He certainly called that one right.

The area of Fergy's C.V. which might privately disappoint him is his total of two European Cups/Champions' Leagues. Not to be sneezed at, of course, but he did have a lot of goes at the competition and it certainly puts him behind Paisley and Clough in that arena ( even acknowledging Aberdeen's Cup Winners' Cup triumph ).

  • Whatever, the man's a legend whether you like him or not. Twenty six years, 38 trophies it will never be matched we can all argue if he's the greatest manager of all time but he is certainly up there.
  • The debate on whether Fergy is the greatest of all time isn't worth having, and possibly disrespects Fegy, Shanks etc. what's not in doubt is that he's been the breatest Manager of Ebgland's most famous Club. He had a bit of luck in his early United days, but the Manager merry go round was only in first gear compared to the speed it's at now. Personally, I like the waybhe had a balance of home produced players together with his big buys. I also like the discipline he shiwed with his players. His record will never be duplicated IMO.

Fergie regulary says his cup winners cup win over real madrid is right up there with his other triumphs.also think he is very proud or breaking the dominance of the old firm in scotland.sometimes think what he achieved in scotland is overlooked a bit.which is why man u came calling after all.

I think there can be no doubt that Fergie is the greatest manager of all time.My rationale is that he has been consistently successful over the course of nearly 40 years and has transcended the different eras in the modern game. That does not in my view disrespect Busby,Clough,Paisley or Shankly, just acknowledge the incredible achievements of Sir Alex.

The way he has built 3 or 4 different sides at United and known how and when to break them up and still be consistently successful over the 26 years is impressive.None of the other managers in the British game have had anywhere near this longevity. Then add his Scottish record where he took a provincial club to domestic and European glory and I think it is case closed.
  • Where do they stand with Liverpool now in the most titles rankings?
  • man utd 20 liverpool 18 on the top tier title winning front
  • A manager won't get a season without coming close to winning anything nowdays! (Don't think Man U came close to winning the title before 1992 and didn't reach any cup finals)

Nevermind 5/6 years (from what I heard the other day its a myth Ferguson would have been sacked had Man U lost to Forest in the cup too)

He certainly proved those in charge they were right to keep faith!

Maybe its what the Arsena board are hoping happens to Wenger....

  • I've never been a great lover of Manchester United or Sir Alex Ferguson, but I do recognise his magnificent achievements during his 26 year reign. I doubt there will ever be another like him. I wish him a long and happy retirement.

Cant believe im gonna say this, but i agree with ME14.

  • Certainly one of the greatest managers and probably the best ever. The league will not be the same without him. However i despise how Sky Sports show a list of greatest all time managers, win percentages etc but only start from the formation of the Premiership.

His first FA Cup win was actually against Palace in 1990.

Let's hope the stripy ones have a similar outcome against you next week.
