  • Tasteless!
  • I'd hate for us to go that route
  • Beggars can't be choosers.
  • I think it would be a real dilemma, as you say beggars can't be choosers......
  • They had Diouf, so why not?

    Good point that
  • Its a hard one not a fan of these cash sites, but of you need a sponser and the ££££ is right you have to go for it.

  • I have a good friend who is a Wanderers fan and they have set up a petition for Bolton to ditch the sponsor, They are getting quite a bit of exposure and media attention.

  • It's hard to say without knowing a) if Bolton had another potential sponsor lined up, and b) the difference in money the two parties were offering. Basically I have morals, but they can be bought !
  • Exactly.. Football is money take the best deal u can. Its what the 11 on the pitch do that counts not whats on the shirt and if taking money from a company with dodgy ethics means u can improve the 11 on the pitch so be it... Now wheres my flak jacket..

  • I wonder if this is the lot that Wednesday turned down recently? Can't link but I started a thread on that.

My own feelings change with the wind on this a bit but they are providing a service to people who otherwise would end up at the door of an unlicenced lender.

Far from a perfect situation and the OFT are struggling to get on top of the payday lending market but it's good to see their fans having the debate and reminding the club that it is not a "normal" business and maybe they should show a bit of social responsibility to the community.

They are a legitimate company. I would have no problem at all with a payday loan company sponsoring Charlton. If it generates revenue for the club then great!
  • I heard that Dildos 'R Us are looking at sponsoring a London based team. They're going to change the club mascot to an 8ft tall penis, but hey if the money's good, who cares?

"It has emerged that Bolton’s new shirt sponsors, payday loan company QuickQuid, were also negotiating with Sheffield Wednesday.

But Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric says he turned down the deal at the last minute on ethical grounds.

Mandaric says: ‘We felt the business model the company operates was not one which we were comfortable to support in our main partner. This partnership would not have been welcomed by the majority of our supporters.’
  • I hope the people who think this isn't a problem aren't the same people who constantly complain about how money has ruined the game, that footballers are money motivated or that chairman should care about the clubs they purchase....

Must admit i'm in this camp too. i don't see the problem. Someone wants money, they lend it to them. I know people get carried away and go on about the 8 million % APR but they are called payday lenders for a reason, you're not supposed to borrow for the long term. I think on Wonga it was something like if you borrowed 500 for a month, you paid back about 650. That's not that extortionate.

It would quite poetic if Boltons loans were called in and they went into admin. I know that most of the loans are like ours ... friendly loans, but one can hope. It would be a poignant message.

In principle I would rather not but its legal and if the money is right and it can fit with the clubs brand image then fine. In Charltons case as a family friendly community club the answer would probably be no.

Nicely put, Kap10 - my sentiments entirely.

  • tbh most big business in all industries have shafted, manipulated and exploited people the world over, at least firms like Quickquid advertise the fact that they do
  • Was talking to a mate of mine who's a Bolton fan last night. He wasn't happy. TBH I wouldn't like us to be sponsored by an outfit like that either.
  • There is a massive backlash in Bolton according to SSN. There must be about 30 of them protesting outside the town hall...
  • QuickQuid! No! QuickQuid! No!

    No Way to Payday!
  • I personally would not be keen, wouldn't stop me going but would make me less proud of the club. I love telling people about our community side and the fact we are family friendly etc and somethng like this would put a big dent in that.
  • The Payday Loan industry is NOT the monster that some uninformed people think. The good established firms like Wonga and QuickQuid run their business very well and help a lot of people out every day, and in a much better way than the old fashioned Loan Shark.
If you keep the loans short term and don't just rollover every month, they are better and easier than dealing with a High St Bank.
  • I've heard that Dougie Freedman has insisted for 1,789% effort from his players next season....
  • Can't see why the Bolton fans are moaning really. Wasn't their last sponsor an online betting company. I know which of the two I'd class as robbers................................
  • You dont have to patronise the company that adorns your club shirt.
In recent years I didnt purcyears hase any air conditioning units, the year before that I didnt purchase any financial products or buy any sportswear products.
