I've got this Camera (not the exact same one but an slightly older model)... As a beginner when it comes to DSLR's I find it really easy to use and isnt too heavy etc...

I'm no expert on P&S cameras. Frankly I'm not an expert at all, but my thinking would be if you're going to spend that sort of money why not spend that little bit more and get the DSLR unless the only motivation is the size.

Only thing is when you go on Holiday, a P&S is perfect because it can fit into your pocket etc... and barely weighs anything (Although Smartphones have pretty much caught up with P&S cameras these days so surely wont be long until they're no longer needed)
When I took my DSLR on Holiday last I had to take two bags with me for the first time, one for my things the other for the camera and can be a bugger to carry around all day.
Thing is you can do so much more with a DSLR it is worth it
I've had Pentax and, latterly Nikon cameras. My earlier - made in Japan - Nikon was a good piece of kit. The last one - made in China - was a pile of crap with rubbish battery life. It finally conked out while I was in New Zealand. It still took photos but as the viewfinder was inoperative you didn't know what of! Bought an emergency Sony Bridge in duty free. It's been excellent. Fantastic Carl Zeiss lens with 50x optical zoom, great battery life and light as a feather, takes good photos with virtually no light and no flash needed - great for museums. Long gone for me the days of lugging around loads of heavy crap and various lenses.
Two good cameras at very good prices. Not much to choose between them technically, although the Nikkon has 24 megapixels compared to 18 on the Canon. 18 megapixels is still more than adequate in all normal circumstances though. Personally I would choose the Canon as I have always bought & loved Canon cameras. Nikkon have their supporters too, of course, and it really comes down to personal choice. You should get her down to Jessops to try them both out & let her decide based on her own personal preferences.

I've been looking at Canon D30 (£200), Nikon AW120 (£220), Olympus Tough TG-4 (£300) and Panasonic FT5 (£200)
Alternatively, is the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 (£250) any good?
