Radio Stations - a bit of a rant

  • But seriously did you not listen in your formative years Leroy? How did you ever know about music when you were say, 10 or 11?
  • I generally listen to non-music stations like BBC Radio4 and 5Live but occasionally I do listen to a music one and I hear something I like, new or old that I don't have in my collection (I have over 2,000 CD's and 20k+ tracks on i-tunes from 1920's-2013). How else would I get to hear it?

I listen to a bit of 6 music/xfm whilst cooking, but rarely it sinks in. In fact, I never really learned about new music from the radio either. tend to get recommendations from friends, and either borrow their Cd/tape! make comps for people. Used to read NME/Q. These days I listent to recommendations on spotify/youtube, click on related artists etc. It can be done!
  • Radio 4 as background noise because I am usually tapping away at the pooter.
Classic FM as I am trying to sleep as it soothes me and relieves my insomnia.
Got bored with the XFM's and Absolutes of this world because it was literally all the same all day.

Exactly the same McBobbin. Only time I ever listen to the radio is on rare occasions that me and the missus are driving somewhere (when she has her pop shizzle on) or at the moment Absolute 90's or 80's whilst decorating. Whoever said above about the non-repeat thing was spot on, never on the same day but only been listening a week and they play a lot of the same stuff the day after.
  • We have Absolute on at work but my office is out the back so I can only just hear it. If I have the radio on at home (for music) its either Kent Gold or Internet Radio

Of course it can nowadays, but I am talking about 30/40 years ago.
  • Jazz FM, Solar radio for me from the UK stations.

I jump onto live365 online, can pick the genre you want to hear, the style, and just plays music, no DJ's.

I haeard Capital Extra, or what used to be Choice FM and it was awful,

Exactly, internet radio is a no brainer, pick your genre, select the style and you are away with no DJ's and annoying ads.
  • Dunno what kind of music you are into, Disco, but if you want an indie/alternative station where the DJs absolutely do choose their own stuff - and as a result you never quite know what you are going to get- then Prague's Radio 1 is well worth a try

    http://www.radio1.cz

Personally I love it. My favourite radio station in the world, ever. Real people. A radio station with integrity.

Which reminds me..what about Radio Caroline?

  • I got fed up with the repetitiveness of Kiss/Capital so switched to radio 1 where they rarely repeated any songs in the same day, but since the turn f the new year I'm hearing the same songs at least three times a day, so I've switched to absolute or listen to CDs I've made with loads of different types of music
  • Listen to Classic FM, never repeats and is relaxing when sitting in traffic

    Who's hacked BIG_ROB's account ?

  • When I got my new car I couldn't be bothered to transfer the stereo over so lost the use of my in-car ipod, thinking I wouldn't miss it. Yet it's made me realise how awful radio is. Repeated songs, the same playlist every day , adverts, 'DJ's who may as well be trained monkeys (in terms of playing music) and the things they say and talk about, Jesus Christ. I don't know about anyone else but when I was younger I used to think DJs were the coolest people, but now I find myself regularly saying "what? What the hell are you talking about?". And don't get me started on, 'hit us up on Facebook, let us know what you're up to this weekend', WHY? Who gives a fuck?

However, just like what someone said about annoying adverts the other day, reality tv, now the radio, there MUST be a demand for it. We already have 2 pages on how annoying it is for songs to be played to death every day, yet they continue to do it. Would they really do it if there weren't people out there saying "I've only heard Pitball 5 times today, I really fancy hearing it a sixth time." Genuine question, I don't know.

    Sorry once I started I couldn't stop.

I realise, but you could still go to record shops, get recommendations from friends, even hear songs at the nightclub/discotheque/dancehall/hop/tea dance whatever applied when you were young. Whilst the "wireless" was probably more usual, it's not necessarily the best place to hear all kinds of music. I think leroy likes his metal, and that's hard to come by in mainstream media.

  • Problem is, British Radio is owned by about 3 groups who control what you listen to and what they will play. Ofcom have no teeth, so these groups get away with it.

6 music is where you hear the new stuff, only problem is that it's on DAB and most of the car owning public don't have DAB in the car.

As for DAB, well that's broken, it's pumping out mostly MP2 quality sound because of the limited bandwidth. We haven't even got DAB+ which uses AAC format, the rest of the DAB using world moved to that years ago.

Radio is a mess, probably has been since the 80's and will continue to be a mess until someone splits up the monopoly.

  • Yes, it's time for the Dr Goebbels show

  • BBC all way for me, 6/5/4/2 and London. The service for our 'annual charge' including the TV is amazing. You can always be educated musically or otherwise via the BBC, if you want to.

Musically also drop in a bit of Absolute 80s/70s/60s, Smooth and Gold and you'll hear a whole lot of of great tunes, some you'll know and some you don't.

I think the 'ex-crim' Andy Kershaw one wrote something like 'the BBC gives the public something they need even if they don't realise it'.

Music is beautiful and I hate the way commercial radio treats it as financial commodity (even though as an industry it is).

Was listening to Shaun Keaveny on 6 this morning and for some feature he used the music that Simon Bates used on 'Our Tune'.

Wondering what Bates does now (BBC Devon) led me to an article about his job previous to that; Smooth Radio, where he was replaced in a line up change.

Global (Smooth's Owners) said "Andrew Castle, Kate Garraway, Tina Hobley and Myleene Klass joining Smooth tell you just how seriously Global takes the launch of Smooth, and the focus and investment we're putting behind this brand,"

Now, I'm no fan of Simon Bates but for a Radio DJ of such experience to be replaced with generically annoying TV presenters (and for most, that's not either their proper jobs) shows you indeed just how seriously Global do take Smooth's output!

  • Obviously music is a personal preference but anything that gets in the top 40 I can guarantee is something that will absolutely sicken me to the core. As a result, any commercial radio station is something I will have absolutely nothing to do with.

If you do like popular music then I would've thought the radio is actually a really good thing as they just repeat all the songs you like every 4 hours or so
  • If you like some good old soul then Solarradio.com is the one.

6 Music all the time at home, iPhone and a couple of bluetooth speakers deal with the DAB signal problem.

The station does over 2m now, so digital isn't holding it back anymore
  • Kisstory on dab is where it's at

We have Smooth on all day every bloody day at work. Nut house calming music for the masses.
Smooth improved (IMO) when Bates got the bullet but still I would prefer to listen to silence or white noise.
  • does or do?

Does starts with a capital D my friend.....
  • Here's a new idea... choose the station you are in the mood for at the time as there is so much choice now. Jazz FM, 6Music, R4/5, Chill, Classical FM, Magic... but never Capital! You'll hardly hear a repeat if you constantly change!

Lauren Laverne accounts for over 1m of those listeners alone.
  • I like radio 6 a lot. There's a great French station called FIP which does 55 minutes music with no chitchat and 5 minutes of news every hour.

Good, can't think of a better three hours of radio in the country, she's excellent, the show is welcoming, the music always interesting, and you feel like you've learnt something without being patronised
