Car Mechanical advice

Think I've been done a barrel by Vauxhall up by perry st Chislehurst.
Firstly couple lights on dash, airbag and oil change light.

They've 'repaired' the airbag light which they said was a dodgy connection or something and wasn't covered by warranty, also needed oil filter change.
I got charged £261 and the light is bag on the dash so have they diagnosed me wrong and charged me for something maybe covered.
Also, how long to do oil filter change and more oil, approx???

Have to take it back in and wanna know what I should be expecting to be saying.
Where do I stand, can I threaten any action etc as they've basically changed my oil. Filter and topped it up for £261

  • Call the shop manager, be nice, (for now) tell him what's happened and see what he suggests.

  • Basically, they haven't fixed my airbag fault, and charged me £263 for oil changed and filter, £75 max anywhere.
    I'm getting more and more pissed of and waiting for the manager to call me back.

  • Spoke to manager on the phone, told him I'm not happy and speaking to him first as I have been advised this is the first Cause of action, his ears pricked up then, told him straight think I've been done over.
    He honestly couldn't tell me the invoice cost and caught him out to the point where he went' err, I don't know how he's charged that'.

    Anyway he's off tomorrow and said he can't make makea decision or assessment over he phone and will call me back Monday after I've been in.

  • I worked on a system a couple years ago for a well known (British) car company , which highlighted dealers who were doing warranty repairs which numbered above the regional average - and these were hauled into the head office and hauled over the hot coals and had to enter Warranty Repairs 're-education'. Consequently, it became obvious that these dealers were subsequently 'finding' non-warranty repairs to replace the warranty ones that they knew were under heavy scrutiny.
    My advice would be 1) Never buy a Vauxhall ! and 2) if you dont get satisfaction from the dealer , say that you are going to complain to Vauxhall itself at Head Office.You might find their attitude will change.
  • If you have paid for a fault to be fixed & the fault has come back then you are within your rights to take your car back to be rectified. Did they not quote you a price before the work was carried out?

  • Yeah, but in a split second for the car to be fixed and safe as I drive the little fella about I say yes, can you do the work, I have no idea how much their work should cost until phone around today.

    My spare' key has stopped working the central locking, however it still start the car and opens the door manually.
    They told me the spare key needs to be replaced but not covered under the warranty.
    However the main key is under
    Got to be Bullshit surely.
  • My rough calculation is that you have been done for about 50 quid.
    Oil, filters, labour, computer plug in for airbag diagnosis at a dealership just a tad over 200.

    Normally airbag faults clear themselves after the car computer has been reset and plugged into the diagnosis laptop thing

  • The problem is that new cars are so technically advanced now that home maintenance is a thing of the past. So many things that you used to be able to do even 10-15 years ago are impossible. We had a golf until recently. 5 years old and a fault showed up on the service with the door lock. Quoted nearly £400 to have it replaced and that if it packed up and locked completely, they'd have take the door skin off to do it. We were selling it anyway so told them to poke it.
  • Interesting thread this. I've been looking at Vauxhall's last couple of days, quite like the look of the new Adam as a little run around but wondered how the new lifetime warranty works. By the sounds of it, its a con.
  • missus has just rung me, gone over a speedbump and car died, won't move - waiting for the AA but a passer by just told her 'looks like the wishbone has gone - that'll be a write off'

    given I've just bought the car about 6 months ago...I'm hoping it ain't a write off!
  • The wishbone forms part of the suspension. Not a particularly difficult thing to replace but involves a fair bit of dismantling and some specialist tools.

  • wishbone ain't too serious... its a mechanical joint to front wheel and can be bought reasonably cheaply off web depending on make and model and can be an on-the-deck repair with axle stands etc

  • car would still start tho and still attempt to move ---might be unwise to try as im sure there would be further damage---but it wouldnt "just die"
  • car wouldn't start apparently, oil spill on the road - seems to have done more damage underneath
  • Probably cracked the sump. Even that's not the end of the world, a fairly simple unbolt, bolt on job (plus the cost of a new sump)
  • Drive shaft could have been ripped out.

    Still - all fixable, but al depends on the value of the car if it's worth it.
  • I took my Omega into a Vauxhall dealer because a CD got stuck in the player, cost me £800, never been back.
  • Ripped a hole in the sump of my Octavia a few years ago drove it 100 miles next before I realized no major damage done another 100k
