It keeps being repeated that Jenkinson signed a contract (in 2011). I don't think he did. My understanding is that he refused to sign one and that the reason we got a good deal is that our then chief executive acquired evidence about Arsenal's conduct that was effective leverage, but if others know better fair enough.
I'm pretty certain about Jenkinson being out of contract. It always seemed strange that we received as much as we did and recently the story emerged that he demanded decent comp to us or he would sign a contract with us, which did not seem realistic. Your tale sounds more likely.
I never saw him play, could someone in two sentences or less explain why he was so hyped, because from what I can tell he achieved it by not actually doing much? other than always playing it safe.

A 2014 version of Ray Wilkins, will be a good player in time. He shone a little in a poor side.
How easy would it have been for a new boy to get lost in a floundering team ? The fact that he held his own amongst ruinous surroundings is greatly to the credit of a young 'un. He always made himself available - sometimes it looks very easy but how come it's beyond many players to play with a such sense of space. OK, so his passing was not so ambitious, but had he been too adventurous he would be getting slated for that as well. He played with considerable maturity, the only one imho to approach the immediate impact and effortless settling in of Lee Bowyer.
I think DP has been badly misadvised - for the sake of all concerned, most of all himself, he should have stayed another half-season - but credit where it's due : our coaching undoubtedly gave him a great deal, but there's no mistaking that there's a lot of natural talent there as well. He only did enough so far to make himself a sought-after free agent - he's not yet a star. Only time and good fortune will tell.
that's interesting, although I repeat my question, how do people think he would have looked in our L1 winnig side? I mention it for direct comparison, is he truly better than Champ standard? Mousse is so far a 'L1' player, you see where i'm going?

He would have looked good in the division winning team for sure (assuming that one extra year wasn't the crucial one, as it could have been at his age). Keeping hold of the ball even under pressure is always an important skill, whether you are seeing a game out or trying to get a late winner/equaliser, the one thing you CANNOT do is lose the ball, and that was Diego's main strength. As to whether he is better than Champ standards... we will have to wait and see. He definitely has the potential to go all the way to the top but a few years on the bench will stall him dangerously. Needs to be playing - for whichever team he ends up at.
It's disappointing he's left but I can't believe some on here are trying to rewrite his contribution or lessen the effect he had on the team. He's a quality player and will go on to play at the top level, just a shame it won't be with us.
I was asking out of genuinely wanting to understand , never saw him play you see
ditto redmist, though i gather from the gushing majority he was class. i sense he will get an early chance and do ok in a mid-table west ham side under play it safe sam.
Its better to have loved and lost than not loved at all. It's better to have tried and failed than not know you've won. There's none so blind as those that wont listen.
Basically It sounds like he was blagging it somewhat.

He was a very good player for us that's not in question
The thing in question is his lack of loyalty and whether or not you consider that to be a judas style crime
The fact he has joined wet spam tells me that he is a lack of morality little greasy haired fuk
Now he don't give a shit what i think and right now I don't care for Diego more interested in the way the future of cafc plays out than how close wet spam get to going down this year
Oh I don't care a jot about him, just can't bare to see all these fine folk tearing themselves up about it, hence why I'm trying to understand his playing. Tomorrows fish and chip wrapping...
Red Mist - for a player so young he had very good positional sense and reading of the game, strong in the tackle and generally kept his passing quick and simple, rarely giving the ball away.
On occasion he showed he was capable of the sublime pass, but only rarely ventured forward preferring to play safe and sure - not surprising as he had such few games under his belt. Nevertheless he had great poise and confidence on the ball for one so young and inexperienced.
Good riddance to him. I actually think he could have stayed with us and seen where we are heading. At least for another season. I don't wish the lad well. Karma is a powerful thing.
And, are West Ham much bigger than us? Strange move in my opinion.
Good riddance ??? Wtf the lad played a major role towards us maintaining our Championship status. Some people have very short memories. Good luck to you Diego, fill your boots in what is a career which could end at very short notice. I shall follow your progress with much interest.
Makes me laugh. Just brought in our third manager in four months and people slate someones loyalty.
Peeters first move was to bring in Buyans. We dont properly know how his preferred formation line up will be.
We've no idea as fans whether Poyet would have been suited to the style he wants to play or not. There's a good chance he would have gone back to being second fiddle to Buyans

Good point boss, but this is a two way stretch, nudge nudge :-)
Would have liked him to stay, but sadly he's chosen to move on. Would have liked to have wished him well, but sadly he's chosen to move on to West Ham.

A serious Belgian journalist and Standard fan has made it clear that Buyans is a classic box-to-box midfielder, well suited to the high tempo English game. As such he is not a like-for- like Poyet replacement. To me he sounds like an obvious replacement for Jacko, and that makes sense because much as I love Jacko I don't think he's able to deliver a full season in that role now.
I am uneasy about the some of the extreme reaction to Poyet, a 19 year old kid, however I have seen or heard not a shred of evidence that the club didn't do all reasonably possible to keep him.
I asked myself why do I feel so sour towards Poyet, and the answer is, his father. When I saw the classless way he exited Brighton I just knew we could expect something similar from his son.
We're all disappointed that he's gone. We're gonna be disappointed with the amount of compo that we get. C'est la vie
And that's the problem. Too may people just shrug their shoulders and give up.
Accepting reality is not "giving up". Accepting reality doesn't mean liking it either.
Or is the alternative to slag off a 19/20 as a "greedy lying ****" on social media. Yeah, sure that will bring the walls of Jericho down.
Poyet is a product of a system. Through luck but also hard work and talent the system has worked out for him. He gets a "dream" job (the dream is playing in the premier league not playing for West Ham before people jump on that).
Nearly all the 100s of kids who came up through the ranks with him have now been "let go". Bad luck, not enough talent but maybe just as much if not more hard work than Poyet put it but still they were "let go". If they stand outside Sparrows Lane asking for loyalty, for a payback of all those years of hard graft, giving up education and a social life, eating what they are told to, etc etc people would just laugh and say "bye, deadwood". You read that horrible word on here every summer and yet those very same people (I know not you Perry) scream for loyalty when the boot is on the other foot.
It's not fair and it's not right but life ain't fair sometimes.
My wife is a Senior Sister. She runs operating theatres. Literally life and death stuff. Does she get paid as much as even the lowest paid Charlton Pro? No, she don't. There's also a lot of bankers and city boys on here who earn more. Is that right? No, it ain't but that is reality of the world we live it.
If any of you want to send my wife some cash to make up for that inequality then feel free.
But no doubt some will say "it was her choice, should and could move to another profession, earn more in Dubai" They would be right but they would be missing the point and they won't see any contradiction in asking a nurse to move if she wants more money but slagging off a pro footballer for doing the same.
Here endeth the lecture.
All good points Henners, the only thing I would say is whose "reality" are we accepting? The maximum wage was the reality once upon a time...
There is only one reality. Now. You are referring to the past but the past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.
The maximum wage was abolished in 1961/2? Literally a life time ago for some of us : - )
Okay lets bring this closer to home. Charlton playing at Selhurst was the "reality" in the eighties. I don't remember you, me or plenty of others on this 'ere forum saying "Oh well, that's the way it is, let's just put up with it"?

For example does anyone think he would of shone in our L1 winning side?

Definitely more to come from Diego as he matures.
