I think we should take what Chris said on Late Kick off at face value. He was not told to play any particular players and was not sacked for for this. I guess was or is unwilling to become a head coach and work under a director of football, which I believe is the senior managemant structure Roland is going for to run the playing side.
I would not be surprised if there is some termination agreement which restricts what he was able to say
There is. Powell inserted his own clause, which requires Roland to say "Huh" after every sentence whenever speaking to the media. The Gaffer has a cracking sense of humour.

If you listen carefully to CP’s somewhat circumspect and diplomatic answers, in reply to Jacqui Oatley’s question "Were you told who to play" he replies to the effect ‘Well....people talk about the FA Cup game [i.e. Sheffield United]....it was the team I thought was best’ (and then goes on to talk in vague terms about trying to build a relationship with RD etc).
But of course it was widely reported that the 'trigger' for his sacking was precisely for selecting the ‘team he thought was best’ rather than including certain of the Liege/’network’ players.
So I don’t think even on ‘face value’ CP’s ‘careful’ responses on Late Kick Off support your assertion that: “He was not told to play any particular players and was not sacked for for this”.
This question may have been asked before but, say he'd gone back to Leicester to coach alongside Pearson, would he still be a hero etc or would he be remembered a somebody who jumped a sinking ship - we can't have it both ways. Legend yes, but also an employee - it's hard, but the two must be separated. Would he still be "The Gaffer" if he'd chosen to leave??

A fair shout - I was trying to establish the level of emotion for some by using, hypothetically, his leaving for his own benefit compared to his leaving because he had no choice.

I suspect that he got sacked because he was unwilling to take the role that Roland wanted him to take. The player issue was s catalyst for this.
