  • Was it the same day as a young boy died when a wall collapsed at St Andrews, Birmingham?

Wow very sad day indeed I has no idea that was the same day. Maybe the thread should be renamed remember the 57? Or 56+1
  • Not seen that footage before. Very upsetting to watch, you want to punch the idiots playing up for the camera but to be generous I guess they had no idea of what was unfolding. The speed that fire spread - just incredible. :-( God rest em.
  • Looked it up.

15-year-old Ian Hambridge of Northampton, a Leeds supporter, was killed when a wall fell on him
  • I can't watch it again. I saw it live on TV having just got back from shopping in Bromley. Not sure why I didn't go to Maine Road that day... It was half time and as Lincoln (the oppo) had won the league it was one of the games being shown on the Big Match that weekend. As ITV went around the grounds for half time reports at grounds they had cameras at (as normal) the pictures came through of the fire, and they just shocked everyone. The game was obviously abandoned at HT and I beleive that this is the only time in the FL that a season has not been completed (the game was never fulfilled)? RIP the fans...
Steve Thompson was Lincoln captain that day and came to play for Charlton soon afterwards.
  • Ditto Pedro, at first I just thought it was a fire at a crappy stadium, then came the images of that poor man on fire and that was when I appreciated the tragedy that was unfolding. I later stayed with a woman in Bradford who had lost her husband in the fire. She was giving free B and B to people who wanted to attend a peace conference in Bradford. A truly humbling experience.

Steve Thompson and George Shipley joined us from Lincoln just a few weeks after the fire.

Not that it matters but it was in fact Bradford that got promoted, hence the bigger than normal crowd. The imps don't do promotion :(

Would have been nice for a minute's silence yesterday but clearly too difficult for the premier league to organise. Well done derby though for their effort.

Horrendous day for Bradford and imps fans. RIP the 56.

  • Won't watch it again as too horrific. Remember at the time going to a memorial/fundraiser at Aldershot's Recreation ground complete with the last post and the most perfect silence I've ever heard at a football ground. Very moving.
