Cole quits England

  • "I got the call from Roy and agree the England team should be about the young players. I think it best I retire from the England team now," said Cole.

"We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything,"

Comes across very classy to me. Never really understood the dislike towards him "as a person", considering I doubt many people on here actually know the guy and he doesn't give that many interviews.

Fair play to him, been a great servant.

    England quit Cole more like.

    Correct decision imo.

Baines is your left back & in the heat of Brazil, I feel younger players may cope better.

So I'd have chosen Shaw over Cole, so there's no spot available.

Anyway thanks Ashley & you can console yourself, with the £3m pa tax free you get from Monaco :-)
  • Been a very decent player but time to move on, we can only hope that Woy also leaves out Lampard.

Gerrard still deserves a spot in the team on current form and should be the only old-stager in the squad, we need to put trust in the younger players.
  • Brilliant player in an England shirt. Always committed and some of his battles against Ronaldo were legendary.
  • Think it will bold well for Rooney having carried united on his back for the past season. He can do the same with England.

It's good this season that the players (likely to be) in the England squad haven't won many trophies, part from joe hart and maybe the odd arsenal player.

You know how it backfired when Lamps and co were used to lot of success with their clubs and struggled to replicate it for England.

Playing for England is now a big step up instead of a step down for the current players in terms of tactics and quality around them.

I hope you understand what I am trying to suggest.
  • Probably the best I've seen in that position over an extended period of time. Out of the so-called "Golden generation" he was the only one who consistently lived up to his billing.

Well done Cole for getting paid shed loads of money and representing your Country at Football. Personally I would crawl over hot coals to play for England and would never retire myself. To be fair to him he has never let England down, but I don't get the idea that he has been classy.

What the freek are you talking about ? Was he wrong in playing for his country then ?

    Joker.
  • Cole has been an excellent player for England, but we have plenty of depth in that position, when you consider the likes of Gibbs (when fit) who at one time was considered to be the future England LB.
  • Good player - improved a lot when he went to Chelsea. Did a good job for England in many games.
  • Joe, Ashley or Carlton ?

I think it's the perception that he's a greedy bastard and cheating on his pretty fit wife...
