I thought everybody wanted an experienced championship manager? Can't have it both ways to suit, despite doing an excellent job with our under 21'a the only other experience he's had is as coach at brighton. Not even assistant manager. Good luck to him, a very good opportunity to prove he can cut it as a number 1 but expectations will be high considering the money they have/are spending.
He was assistant manager at Yeovil before he came to Charlton

"Brighton & Hove Albion[edit]
On 19 July 2013, Jones joined Football League Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion, filling the new position of assistant head coach, working under Head Coach Óscar García.[5] Following Oscar's departure from Brighton and the appointment of new manager Sami Hyypiä, Jones changed roles and became Brighton's first-team coach. Hyypia's resignation on 22 December 2014, Jones was appointed as interim manager.[6] Following Chris Hughton's appointment as manager on 31 December 2014, Jones moved back to his role as assistant manager.[7] On 3 February 2015, after the appointment of Colin Calderwood as Hughton's assistant manager Jones was demoted to the role of first-team coach.[8]"
He still has more relevant experience that Fraeye.
He got demoted and Brighton have gone from strength to strength. We need somebody who's done it before. Yes, he'd be better than Karel, but he's not what we need right now!
I think NJ would have been a great signing for us. He has helped coach the England U21s as well. Let's see how he does at Luton.
Every appointment is a risk but this would have been a brave and ambitious appointment for a club with a good youth set up and a lot of players new to England who need coaching. I can't believe that under normal circumstances he wouldn't have applied for the job here when Luzon was sacked. Maybe he did even in the abnormal situation we are in now.

Doing an incredible job at Luton, but failed miserably at a bigger club (Stoke) so the jury is still out on just how good he is outside his comfort zone.

Not doing bad at Newcastle...
Spending 90m in January and the bottom 5 sides being a general shit show has helped a fair bit though.
Of course he had to then get some results, but if you spend 90m on a side in the bottom 3, you'd have to be extremely bad to not see an improvement.

Perhaps a fairer measure would be to look at how others have got on at Stoke directly before and since Jones. New manager bounce aside when O'Neill came in, I would argue very little difference.
He’s doing a great job at Luton and for all I know may well be the nicest guy on earth but for some reason I find him incredibly irritating. No particular reason or prejudice, he just grinds my gears.

NJ found the expectations at Stoke too difficult to deal with - from the fans more than the owners. Some of that pressure was self-induced of course.
He was a bit like a rabbit caught in the headlights whereas at Luton the expectation is far lower. Really nice guy and it was a relief for him, I'm sure, that he could return to the comfort of Luton, a bit like a pair of comfy old slippers that you just can't throw away!
Yes it's interesting how both Jones and Howe have had 2 massively successful spells at one club, with a less successful spell at a larger northern club in the middle. Sometimes the fit between manager and club just works.

There is no doubt that the influx of players has been a contributory factor but, to be fair, there is massive overall improvement which is just down to the purchases - of the four purchases, Trippier has only played 3.5 games and Guimares has only been on the pitch for 100 minutes in total. Wilson has not played since 27th December so Wood has just been a replacement for him (and less effective in front of goal) so the net gain is, in the main, Burn. Targett was an extremely shrewd loan deal.
Howe has got the team as a whole playing and an example of that is probably Shelvey who is playing the most consistent football he has ever done in the PL. Howe's even shown himself to be being the bigger man in forgiving Fraser for what he did at Bournemouth and getting him playing the best he has since he signed for Newcastle. Their only defeat in the last nine games was the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea where Wilson, Trippier, Fernandez, Shelvey, Joelinton and Willcock were all missing and Fraser and Saint-Maximin were only fit enough to make the bench (played 22 minutes between them). Newcastle still looked organised and only conceded in the 89th minute.
Everton's net spend is over £300m for the last six seasons. Newcastle's is £120m in that time. Newcastle, in 17 games under Howe, have picked up more points than Everton have all season. One is in serious danger of going down whereas the other isn't. As we've found it isn't just about money. It's about buying the best players available for the right money and the first thing that Howe did in signing Burn, Trippier and Targett is to sort out the back line. Everything else is built upon that and getting all the players to give their absolute most every game.

Jones time at Stoke was a bit of a disaster but they do not seem to be going anywhere this season whereas Luton are 5th and with a chance of promotion and some 14 points ahead of Stoke who are in 16th. As you say, horses for courses and probably the best example of all time of someone who wasn't the right fit was Brian Clough at Leeds - a brilliant Manager but someone who had spent his time ridiculing the Leeds players before he went there and then expected them to then follow him over a cliff - even though he carried on disrespecting them when he was in charge.
Bagging the Southampton job would be incredibly well deserved if he gets it. Always been disappointed that he never found himself in charge of the first team with us.
Must reference the Eddie Howe comparisons above after seeing the job Howe is doing with Newcastle so far this season. If he follows that path (Bournemouth -> Burnley -> Bournemouth -> Newcastle) then Saints fans will be very happy indeed.
After Nathan Jones' experience at Stoke I just can't see this working out as Southampton will always sell their best players and what would be success for the Saints ? Fantastic record at Luton where the hatter's continue to punch above their weight just like Jones, but I'm not convinced that Southampton fans will accept the diminutive Welshman, similar to the Stoke fans that were expecting a bigger name.
Charlton would've been a good fit a few years ago after his success with the U21's. Deserves an opportunity at the top table and I'm sure he will accept but fan power may be against him ?
