Agree. Champs League should be great

    Haha. I could have.

However Leroy, it would not have surprised me, to get a response prying why I dislike Barca?!

Also, don't try and patronise me to say I know nothing about La Liga. How the hell do you know of my knowledge, laughable really. I don't know the ins and outs of the allocation system (which MrLargo kindly indicated). If that's how it works in Spain, fair enough, still dislike them any how.

On the other hand, you get brave and start patronising, behind your keyboard.

    :)

No problem at all with you not liking a team. No problem at all with any reasons you may or may not have for it. But you clearly don't know anything about the situation with away followings in Spain, and shouldn't have made a comment on it which displayed that ignorance. Not sure how it's patronising of me to say that - just pulling you up on something you said that doesn't make sense. Of course - if you want to get all hissy about it, that's your prerogative.

Ditto. Been a long time for them - and they've been so good it would have been a travesty if they'd lost out. Just hope they can patch Costa and Turan up for next week against the General's XI...

Not getting hissy, far from, I'm a laid back guy. But from your first message to me, it seemed like you were trying to mug me off, which won't happen. That's all.

I have no problem pulling me up in something I didn't know. But if you read the whole thread (which I am sure you did). I thought you could have done it in a much more polite way, like MrLargo.

Instead, you chose your own way of writing, that's your prerogative.
  • Leroy what went on with Messi this season? Was he just not arsed until he signed the new contract? Didn't get on with the new gaffer?

Divided loyalties for me. Just. Had a Barca shirt since 86 and still fit into it.... Just.
Also like Atletico, saw them in 08 with Forlan and Aguero up front.

So pleased Atletico won the title though.

Like Sevilla also.... not a bad season so far.

    Bring on the CL final!
  • Delighted for AM. Played some great football this season & deserved the title. Hope they go on to beat RM next week.

Do you think there's an Athletico Fans Forum with 200 + pages with fans slagging the club & each other off about how the 447 tickets were allocated and why those in Vicente Gold got preference!! ;-)

Heard there was a fight after too much standing up in the crowd as the players lifted the trophy ... :-)
  • Much as I have admired Barcelona's play in recent years, I'm delighted that Atletico did it - about time after 10 years of the Barca/Real duopoly and a great achievement by the team and Simeone with less than 20% of the budget of those two.

Hopefully, they'll make it a double against Real. I so enjoyed their dismantling of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
  • So atletico could have the most successful season in Spain EVER!!!!!!

With the two calibre of teams they've got breathing down their neck ,that must be the best sporting achievement known to man if u ask me.!

    Up the athletico!!!!!

  • Seriously, how did they only have 470 odd tickets in a 98k stadium?

Sounds like dialogue from Snatch or something.
  • Thanks for the answer Leroy x

OohAaah is working on this now.

There are a couple of main reasons for it.

Firstly, the rules about away allocations are flimsy at best, and totally unenforced. If clubs can get away with not having to provide an away allocation, why wouldn't they? If you've ever seen a Madrid derby, you'll see the same thing - a Bernabeu full of Real fans and about 200 Atletico. Do you think for one minute that Manyoo wouldn't fill Old Trafford with their fans every single week if the league didn't make them allocate a certain percentage to away fans?

Secondly, and more importantly, there just isn't the culture of away followings in Spain. It's never been popular to go away - in fact, this is the case in most other countries. It's mainly in Northern European countries that happens.

    Up the athletico!!!!!

Hardly compares to our putting the Wendies and Blades in there place.
  • Pleased the underdogs did it. How great when the rules favour the big clubs even more than they do in England and still they lose! What a shame the "followers" of Spain's big two fail! F*** you and the horse you try to latch on to.
  • I'll join in on the hate Barça front. I live about 50km up the coast from Barcelona, and used to travel occasionally, as a follower of my Spanish club Deportivo La Coruña. Part of my dislike for the Barça brigada is they have the same 'we deserve to win everything' mentality which so offends people who dislike Man Utd, Arsenal or Chelsea (and also Real Madrid). As I live here, I also get the Catalan sports press El Mundo Deportivo and Sport, both of which fan the flames of one eyed football fans on a daily basis. I ca remember the night Deportivo won the spanish cup, their first ever major trophy, and the next day, neither paper found room on the front page for the cup final, as Barça were looking for a new manager.
As far as travelling fans go, it generally does'nt happen aside from regional derby's, which occasionally go haywire. I went to Bilbao with Deportivo, where they did'nt bother to segregate the fans, and the noisiest elements of both clubs ended up on the same terrace behind one goal. Tremendous atmousphere and not a hint of bother. In my innocence, I assmed that was always the way in Spain, so when I went to see Zaragoza- Deportivo, I made no effort to disguise who I supported, which is a suicidally silly thing to do in Zaragoza.
I've been in the Camp Nou with twenty other fans of Deportivo, Zaragoza and Seville there were about the same, and about sixty in Espanyols old ground, so I can say from experience the Spanish don' travel much. Most of those fans were simply living in those cities anyway.
At the big matches, big segregation follows. Real Madrid and Barcelona always limiteach others away following to about three hundred in their mutual tit-for-tat hatred, and I asume despite no real animosity between the two, Barca did the same last night, as they could probably have filled a couple of Camp Nou's with their own fans.

Good post Ken - thanks for the insight.
I remember being at the Bernabeu once for game v Seville, and they had about 200 fans right up in the heavens. Yesterday, there was a solitary Atletico fan with his ATletico shrt on right behind the goal where Godin scored who went ballistic when they equalised - imagine that at the Den !
I'm glad AM won, as they are the team most Madrilenos support, with Real being the Manure equivalent with most of their fans coming from Guildford.

I dont like Barca either ! - and am i the only person who doesnt like the way they play football ?? - i sit there most of the time thinking, will someone have a shot on goal ffs instead of a million passes around the half-way line? Or am i just too old-fashioned?!

BTW, where are you, Tossa? LLoret? Estartit? Escala ?

Actualy, after consulting Google Maps its obvious you are more likely to be Calella.

  • Whilst I am glad AM won, I certainly don't have a hatred for Barca. I've been lucky enough to go a few times over the years, including when they were having a few barren ones some time back. In those days, the ground wasn't filled & you could get seats in the home areas quite easily. These days, you end up in the "neutral zone" which is (or was a season or so ago) down in the bottom corner, with poor views.

Sounds like the press are just as bad there, as they are here in their coverage of their favourites, despite the achievements of anyone else.

    Great film
  • In light of the info from MrLargo & Leroy, should actually count ourselves pretty lucky.

Imagine if Sheff Utd only allocated 200 seats for the Qtr Final...

Claim your free prize! I am in Calella. Handy for the Camp Nou, but a bit of a commute to the Valley, so my children are growing up with a hole in their lives where Charlton should be. Still, living by the sea means their swimming lessons are already hugely advanced.

  • Martino was absolutely hopeless. A complete disaster.

Turned up on day 1 and wanted to play more direct football. After a few weeks the players didn't like it and told him, so he gave in to them and let them play how they wanted!

So we're back to Tiki Taka only this time there's no bite in it and off-the-ball the players are lazy and don't press like they used to because there's no authority from the manager.

And some of his substitutions when they needed to get a goal have been nothing short of ridiculous.

Well deserved title for Atletico, great to see a side that haven't spent fortunes winning. Shame that some of their team will be broken up this summer.

You jammy bastard - wish I could be there for the Screamin' Rockabilly weekender next month - brilliant line up...
  • I used to work in a bar where they congregated afterwards (I think there was a connection with the Psychobilly weekend organisers in june). It made a great change from the Whigfield/ M Clan/ Boyzone rubbish we played for the rest of the summer.

Do you think for one minute that Manyoo wouldn't fill Old Trafford with their fans every single week if the league didn't make them allocate a certain percentage to away fans?

The EPL and it's clubs are well aware of the need to sell their 'product'. To do this they need a number of things, one of which is atmosphere in the grounds, & to get this they are aware they need away fans in reasonable numbers. Clearly none of the clubs want to lose out on revenue where possible so they want to ensure the stadium is as full as possible, but they also want the away fans. So in answer to the question, it seems unlikely that Man United would fill their ground with home fans only if allowed.

Not sure I agree with that. Many Premier League grounds are completely devoid of atmosphere, Old Trafford included. I think they'd much rather save on the costs and hassle they incur through segregation, stewarding and policing away supporters. A full stadium certainly makes for a more attractive product, but in terms of atmosphere the tv companies tend to just turn up the microphones next to the couple of hundred supporters making a bit of noise. If Man Utd and the like were genuinely concerned about creating a better atmosphere then they'd give away more tickets to away supporters, rather than sticking to the minimum requirement of 5%.

  • The EPL paid out 4 million pounds in the 2013-2014 season to improve away attendance. This money was used to reduce ticket prices for away fans and subsidise transport costs.

Making more tickets available to away fans may not be the solution for some teams, as they struggle to fill their allocation as it stands.

On a personal level I don't think the atmosphere in some grounds is great (certainly not compared to the past) but it is still cited as an attraction by others.
