Brede Hangeland Released

sounds like he was disappointed how he was told and who could blame him

Brede Hangeland has slammed Fulham after the club informed him of his release via email.
I received such notification by e-mail with no representative from the club meeting with me at any point to discuss this matter. After six-and-a-half years of loyalty and hard work, and the last few years as captain, I am disappointed beyond words about this course of action.

Imagine getting a email to say u was sacked and nothing else

    He was not sacked.

He had reached the end of his contract and not agreed a further contract, therefore he knew he was leaving irrespective of the email.

The manner of his departure may depend on his relationship with his former employers.

Shabby. Hangeland was in my view one of the reasons that Fulham survived so long in the Premiership. Unlike other players he turned down opportunities to join a bigger club.It is said both Arsenal and Man Utd at different times looked at taking him.

Very good centre-back. Would happily see him at Spurs in place of Michael Dawson, who has got the turning circle of the QE2.
  • Only 32, would do a job for any mid table prem side. Can see him at somewhere like West Ham

Wrong. He still had a year left on his contract.

First and third sentences are correct, the second is not.

He was aware Fulham had an option to terminate the contract.

On something like £60k a week at Fulham I believe.

That doesn't appear to be the issue although opening it might be :-0

Still a completely unacceptable way to communicate with someone who has given the club such loyalty. Not on.

    yes, an option.
So he didnt know they were going to take that option until he got an email which is shoddy.
  • Would be a great signing , unfortunately not for us.

If he was still under contract he was sacked, whatever way you put it,
even if the option was there to terminate(which technically means sack)
for example if you start a job and have a 3 month probation period, which after you finished they let you go, you have been sacked, you knew it was a option for them and they took it
  • Fails the CL height test
  • Surprised at this.

He would have probably been the best defender in the league next season for Fulham.

Maybe it's due to his wages being so high, but he sounds like he would have taken a reduction. I can't see him getting £60k anywhere else at 32.
  • Must be a money issue, not sure what his injury record is like but on his day he is a bloody good defender.
  • He should go for a pint with Riga !
  • Proper pro, numerous stories of him just being happy at Fulham and rejecting any interest. Rare to see such loyalty at the top level nowadays
  • Arsenal wanted him last season!

    What's he passed? ;-)
  • An older version of Ryan Shawcross, working with Pulis... Good signing for them I'd say, unfortunately.
  • Thats a cracking signing for them. Would have gladly had him at Spurs over Dawson.
  • ffs Nigels stumbling over 4-leaf clovers. Arrrggghhhh

Loyalty does cut both ways though. I, seriously, doubt that he was working for minimum wage. He was the Captain of a team that was relegated and I suspect that he was offered reduced terms in the Championship and he declined them so they let him know that he was no longer wanted/needed.

I don't think the players can have it both ways. They clearly, through their Agents, bully the clubs into paying them a small fortune - which leads most clubs to run at a loss, then they demand loyalty when they want another year at (£60k a week is £3m a year) silly money when they are, somewhat, past their best.

I don't know if this player has done any of the above, but clearly many have and I think clubs are starting to treat these (greedy) millionaires in the way they treat the club - it's all about money, it's not about loyalty.
