  • Don't forget KR only bought in Clarke as cover for Reeves, who he was still trying to sign
  • On paper, in terms of ability and experience, it’s hard to get a team out that would work, however, this is the best I could get.

    Phillips/Steer
    Solly Bauer Pearce Page
    Aribo Pratley
    Clarke
    Vetokele Fosu
    Taylor

It looks suspiciously like the dreaded 4-2-3-1 formation to me haha. However I do agree that formation is probably the only one we can play to fit all our best players in.

Would be my Squad with everyone fit... Really dont see how Grant can be dropped

With that squad we abandon any notion of midfield play. Have the obvious back 4, Pratley just in front as libero/cover/Beckenbauer - no midfield at all - all 5 attack minded strung across the width of the pitch and relentlessly hammer balls forward at the first opportunity keeping play as far from our goal as possible while overwhelming oppo defences. Plus KaG to come on to bolster the goal scoring. Would be dreadful to watch but we'd win 10 on the bounce before our opponents cottoned on.

Fosu as a wingback? Can I have some of whatever you are smoking?

Didn’t realise that when I was putting it together. I was thinking more of a 4-2-1-3, but that is very much like 4-2-3-1 as well I suppose. Maybe a 4-2-2-2 with Clarke and Fosu as attacking midfielders and Vetokele and Taylor up front.

I also think 4231 is an absolutely fine formation to play if your manager isn't total nonsense (Robbo) with no plan b. It just relies heavily upon a striker who can hold the ball up and link the play, it does however allow you to fit 3 creative attacking players in behind him. When used correctly and as one of a few interchangeable systems it can be devastating.

Fosu at right wing back, Solly at left centre back, Clarke in the centre of midfield
Fosu is the odd one out granted yet its about having a system that uses your best players... Yes we'd be weak at the back yet Fosu has always covered his Full-Back when playing 4-4-2... As for Clarke he's out most creative player which has been highlighted since his first injury in October, cant leave him out so would have him behind Grant and Taylor yet covering Midfield on the defensive

As for Solly - Do you realise he's actually played LCB this season, of course you'd have him either on the left or right of the centre of defence when needed depending on the line up of the opposition
  • I actually think 4231 would work quite well with the return of Clarke and Taylor being a better striker than Magennis.

    Phillips
    Solly Bauer Pearce Page
    Pratley Aribo
    Grant Clarke Fosu
    Taylor.

Goals across the front 4, Pratley as the destroyer and we know he can chip in with a goal, Clarke and Aribo to link up, Grant and Fosu pace down the flanks, Taylor to do what he does.

4231 only stopped looking good when our man in the hole went missing. Clarke coming back would allow us to use that formation again and use it well imo

Sad to say, I dont think I would even have him in the starting line up as a first choice anymore. Seems a shadow of his former self.
  • Igor can play up top on his own, in a two or play a deeper role (or at least he could before his injury).

He might even work at the tip of a diamond behind KG and LT.

He is better than Ajose and more experienced than RHF.

We just have to see how fit he is and how good he is now.

Still hope what led to the Accrington goal was a one off mistake as felt he's played well against Sunderland and Shrewsbury

No where near as good as he was though and couldnt handle the Championship now I dont think
  • If Vetokele is fully fit and back to his best, I'd have him in front of Taylor and Grant.

Obviously with him missing a lot of games, he's probably best off coming off the bench for the next month or two while Bowyer sees where he's at.

Certainly wouldnt have him ahead of Taylor... His hold up play against Shrewsbury was superb!!

Not to mention he's Bowyer's signing so wouldnt make sense if he was to drop him

Way I see it is its two Striker positions with the following fighting it out for each:

    Taylor v Hackett-Fairchild
    Grant v Vetokele v Ajose
  • Igor can play up top on his own, in a two or play a deeper role (or at least he could before his injury).

Igor is a penalty box operator, without doubt.
His anticipation, movement off the ball and composure in the area is 1st class ..... play him in tandem with Taylor, and feed them both with decent service.

    Where does that leave Grant?
He's at his most effective driving into and around the box, shooting on the run.

All 3 main strikers have different attributes.
Horses for courses ..... pick 2 with the other on the bench, mix and match according to game plan, etc.

If we get this Igor back, he should tear up this league

A fit Tony Watt, Vetokele, JBG and Cousins all in the same team brings a tear to my eye.

  • Need to get the game called off now just to stop him getting injured again...
  • To me 4231 often leaves the fullbacks too exposed, as often the wide attacking midfielders never seem quite sure who they should be picking up, leaving the fullbacks with 2 against 1 too often.
  • When he first joined I thought he was our next Darren Bent...

The finishing in that you tube video is a lot like Bent. Perhaps without the pace though.
  • I have no reason to suppose this other than “this is Charlton” but I have the feeling that we sadly won’t ever see the best of Igor again. Hope I’m wrong.
  • the last time I saw Vetokele play was at Rotherham .. after a couple of tough tackles he seemed to lose all appetite for the difficult stuff .. I hope that after his expensive recuperation he comes back stronger and more willing to get stuck in
  • He’s gonna twist his ankle on a crisp today, 4-months out and all sorts being hurled at CARD...
  • If we can get the player back from when he first joined we’re in for a treat. That injury really knocked him, weren’t there reports that he nearly quit football altogether during that lay-off?

Pessimist in me thinks we’ll never see the original Igor again but hopefully he kicks on and shows us what he’s all about.
  • No way are we getting the same Igor. But we don't need that Igor for him to be a decent League 1 striker, and even on crutches blindfolded and playing barefoot he is better than Ajose.
