Best 5 Charlton Centrebacks

Paul Went was a favourite icon but as a player he does not get into the top 5. Back then our defence was leaky and he wasn't playing against top class strikers. I think he gets into peoples lists because he was part of a team that many including me can still name man for man!

No argument that Rufus was number 1.

1 Jorge Costa - Fearsome leader
2 Mark Fish - Quality all round centre back.
3 The Reverend Richard Rufus - superb ball winner, prone to basic errors.
4 Chris Perry - Very underestimated by many.
    5 Peter Shirtliff

Wise move Stonesy - Shipperley played most of his matches for Charlton in the Third Division and then went to Gillingham.
Was great at his level though.
Compare with Paul Elliott who went on to Celtic, Chelsea and Serie A with Pisa

    Hinton
    Rufus
    Elliott
    Ufton
    Reeves

Reeves very unlucky not to get in the above 5

    Pates
    Elliot

    Shirtlife or Pender

    Hinton - Shirtliff - Webster - Costa - Rufus

Rufus comes top of the list - as well as being a magnificent player and a great guy, he only ever played for us and his loyalty as a one-club man for lil' ol' CAFC cost him his rightful England recognition.

Geoff Scott is a funny one. He played his two games in 1982 and quite a few people thought he was really good (I didn't see either game). It was often said that his absence was one of the reasons we were near the bottom of the table but I've since watched the highlights of the game he played at Stamford Bridge (it's on YouTube) and he didn't look too clever and neither did Paul Elliott. I guess we supporters were a lot more tolerant in those days.

Ps; take a look at the youtube footage and see Colin Pates smash home a real screamer (for Chelsea).

I totally disagree, I thought Paul Went was absolute class. Definitely in the top five of centre backs I have seen in fifty three years of watching Charlton.

Are my top 5 in order for ability. But for commitment and enjoying seeing them play must mention Went, Reeves, Brown, Shirtliff, Youds, Thompson and Maxie Miller!

Rufus hesitated on the ball. Couldn't pass. But what he had was pace bravery and was able to read the game. Looks like he's in everyone's top 5
Imagine how good he would have been had he been able to play out from the back.

Haha - I actually thought he was a great player. Have seen very few players as good in the air as him at the back.
