In no particular order: Robert Johnson - an influence for so many others. Neil Young Amy Winehouse John Lee Hooker (and I know I'll get slaughtered for this:) George Michael
Music is, of course, a personal thing and is often age-related. So on behalf of the "oldies, I nominate:
Brian Wilson, musical genius Neil Diamond, great live. Roy Orbison, beautiful voice, didn't need to cavort on the stage Johnny Cash, sang about life situations Glenn Campbell, good solo singer and part-time Beach Boy
I can only see maybe Weller getting more than my one vote out of that lot.
wow, corkn' line-up hawksmoor. & pleasantly surprised to see a terry reid appearance in this thread, his "seed of memory" is one my top 10 albums, ahhh terry, soooo unlucky/underrated.
Tom Waits Nick Cave John Martyn Joni Mitchell Mark Kozelek
top tips shrew, and truly, is mark kozelek's "ruth marie" one of the saddest/best songs ever!? anyone ever heard john martyn react to being heckled - talk about 0-60 in seconds, very different to his song style.
very tough, this one, as everybody, however great, has had their dodgy periods/moments - look at the giant, van morrison, you can discount most of a 15 year chunk of his output, yet astral weeks and veedon fleece are both in my top 20 ever albums.

Cheers shooters, Kozeleks most recent Sun Kil Moon albums are up there with the best work he's done.
re John Martyn - Its funny but on his last tour, before sadly leaving us, he seemed to be enjoying performing more then he had in a long time.

agree re both points shrew, and no apologies for everyone getting this chat, as you all should know about mark kozelek/sun kil moon/red house painters body of work...and everybody should have at least 5 john martyn albums!
There are some very good lists here and I would agree with Shooters about the quality of Charlton fans musical taste (with some notable exceptions!). Good to see Cohen and Waits getting mentions - part of the Holy Trinity for me of singer/songwriters/poets with Bobby as God of course!
