shirt numbers

we are getting near that time when the shirt numbers are allocated/announced, and i just don't like it. one year you are number 9, 10, or 11, and then next you are no. 16 or 24, or vice versa, or you are number 37 from the off, or, or...etc. i just don't believe this system enhances team spirit, indeed in many cases may detract from it. why not just allocate lottery style, that way it avoids any ups or downs a player might feel as a result of receiving x number. is it fa rules? it may seem minor in the grand scheme, but hey, it's still close season. your thoughts ladies?

Or why not go back to 1-11 - it worked for over 100 years

    Maybe.

Its unusual that we would give a player a lower number unless everyone is aware that they are leaving like Rob Elliott. I don't think this is really an issue?

there is only one set of 1-11, so how do you feel when you are not included, or actually, maybe it spurs you on...anyway, just some random musing, nothing vital as i said, i'll go away now;>)

One thing that does annoy me , slightly off topic is the club shop only has 1 price ( 12.95 ) for shirt printing and there isn't a price for just a number

    Maybe.

Shirt numbers are totally meaningless now, epitomised when Stuart (sweaty) Balmer wore the No 1.

Maybe players do but i couldn't give a toss.

Some players like different numbers, Solly 20, Wiggins 16. Just some players have a preference don't think it matters that much at all

When shirt numbers are announced it may tell us a lot.. such as is Pope no 1 does Lennon get 6 ect.. will give us an idea of how big bob sess the squad!
  • Options
"I am number 2, you are number 6"

So far I reckon it will be:
    Fox 3
    Jackson 4
    Morrison 5
    Reza 8
    Church 9
    Vetokele 10
    Harriott 11
    Pope 13
    Moussa 14
    Wiggins 16
    Buyens 17
    Solly 20
    Wilson 23
    Cousins 24
    Nego 25
    Parzyszek 26

And my crystal balls tell me:
We will give 1 to Bailly, 6 to a new cb, 7 to a new winger, and 2 will stay vacant

It could well be for merchandising purposes. If a player wears a different number depending on what position he's playing in or whether he starts each match, it might put people of spending money on a shirt with a player's name/ number? Just a thought.

What is the point nowadays of even having numbers, surely just a name can suffice.

However, I do agree that shirt numbers should be the following:

    1 - gk
    2 - rb
    3 - lb
    5 - cb
    6 - cb
    7 - rw
    4 - cm
    8 - cm
    11 - lw
    9 - st
    10 - st

    Surely it's

    1 GK
    2 RB
    3 LB
    4 RH
    5 CH
    6 LH
    7 OR
    8 IR
    9 CF
    10 IL
    11 OL

A number is a number. They don't mean anything anymore (although Gallas as 10 when he was a defender, Bouhlarouz as 9 as a defender and Clint Dempsey as number 2 do look strange).

In Italy and many other foreign countries it is now commonplace to see players wearing 70/80/90 numbers, like in American sports.

However, I do agree that shirt numbers should be the following:

    1 - gk
    2 - rb
    3 - lb
    5 - cb
    6 - cb
    7 - rw
    4 - cm
    8 - cm
    11 - lw
    9 - st
    10 - st

    Why has 4 become common place for a CM ? Surely 4 & 5 should be CB and 6 & 8 CM ?

Pretty sure 4 is the traditional number for a central midfield player. 6 should always be a centre half

    4 Nobby Stiles.
    5 Jack Charlton.
    6 Bobby Moore.

    I miss alphabetical numbering personally.

The reason we can't have 1-11 on the back of shirts is because

    a) Player names would mean we'd constantly be having new shirts printed all the time
    b) Having player names on the back of shirts means people buy shirts with names on the back, and the more people buying shirts with names on the back the more money the club makes

Kinda limits the manager's formation options...
