Having had a cursory glance at the cards today, I'm really intrigued by the 7.45 at Windsor. D'BAI (13/2) is only going over 6f for the second time (looked alright when doing it at Meydan but might not have run the right race for himself), having previously been a winner over 7f/1m. Always runs well - very smart - and I'd be very tempted by a small each-way flutter, with The Tin Man quite easily opposable at evens.
PaddyP17, as a man who appears to spend some considerable time studying the horses. I'd be interested to know if you win overall on the horses ?
I ask because I've often wondered, if I studied it all (a bit like Peanuts and the Grand National), whether I could make a profit. I reckon I'd struggle.
(Please feel free to tell me to mind my own business ).

I turn a small profit. Nothing to write home about but probably a 7-10% ROI over the last 18 months or so. It's a fun pastime and pays for the occasional beer or two!
That said, you have your ups and downs and my last few months have been a bit poor. The GN was a loss, Cheltenham I probably turned a small profit, Punchestown was a fair loss.
If you're willing to study, then a profit is definitely possible! But it's not easy. My mate on Twitter (profprofitable) had a phenomenal 40% ROI but that's since slipped with a fallow spell at the start of this flat season.
A little each way interest in Laxmi Windsor 6.45 tonight wouldn’t be a bad bet as he has been working well at home and Meehan not bad record with his 2 year olds
Oh, @Addick Addict - Bexley 6th XI's bonus points are definitely wrong. They only lost by 11 runs, yet are down having only three bonus points. Should be (I think) eight plus bowling bonus points, so 11 points total.

Thanks Paddy for that - will let the captain know.
Think those on here for your knowledge of horse racing might be left a little confused though ;-)

Too right - I've been searching for details of Bexley 6th trying to find out what the racing plans are.

I manage to keep my head in front. Most of us who have been in the game for a long time have graduated to concentrating on specialised methods i.e. concentrating on certain races such as 2 year old races etc. I now concentrate on Group and Stakes races where the money is and where the trainers are going for the big prize money . I do not look at valuable handicaps as generally too competitive. Hope this helps . By the way I watch all races every day apart from home matchdays when I watch the recordings .

Likewise, and always have.
If they are carrying different weights (apart from age or sex allowances) I leave well alone - apart from a few exceptions where even then I'll just have a little flutter.
I normally show a profit over the course of a season - especially the flat.
Counter-intuitive as it may sound, the big field handicaps are "mathematically" the best races to bet on. You dont need to know anything about horse racing, just keep backing a few each way at best prices you can get at best each way terms and you will make money long term. Once you start building your own knowledge you can really get an edge in those races.

Eh, each way money is each way money, even at relatively skinny odds.
I thought Laxim ran a good race Paddy too and one to keep an eye on. Just a little addition to what others have added about betting on the horses. I watch every race every day apart from the all weather and go racing a lot too and make notes on various things I see. Fixed odds betting I concentrate on trainers and I buy or sell favourites on the spreads (I have a tipping line for these bets) I’ve made gambling my sole income for past five years now and also bet on the American golf too
Nice little each way double on those two Paddy.........the bets the bookies hate
Each-way filth! ;-)
I remember when it was 1/4 odds 8 + runners and 1/3 16+
How old are you?
When I first came into the industry it was:
5 runners or less All Up 6-7 runners 1/4 first 2 8+ runners non-handicap 1/5 first 3 8-11 runners handicap 1/5 first 3 12-15 runners handicap 1/4 first 3 16-21 runners handicap 1/5 first 4 22+ runners handicap 1/4 first 4
That was 37 years ago!
At the fractions you mention, unless the win book was massively over round the place book would be overbroke every time.

So betting shops had been open around 20 years when you got into it.

Yes - I first joined Ladbrokes in 1981.
I’d been a punter for the thick end of 10 years at that point.
I was sending postal bets to Copes and McLachlans before betting shops opened. I think Moores which was originally a credit bookmaker was the first to have a shop in Woolwich in New Road .

I did my initial training in Ladbrokes, New Road - quite possibly the old Moore’s shop!

At current percentages bookmakers would be bust very quickly if they offered those fractions.
@PolzeathNick would think all his birthdays and Christmasses had come at once!
