Here's a thought - it goes to the wire but ultimately we lose out to Wigan/Wolves/whoever.
In fact we don't bring anybody else in and BP says something like, " yes we would have liked to strengthen, but only with the right players and sometimes this doesn't happen. I am happy with the squad we have and confident they can meet the challenge"
Will Charlton Life go into meltdown?

Unlikely. it is what it is.

We desperately look squad-wise like we are short of another striker though, particularly if Igor gets injured, and have had a long time to address that.

    Do you not agree ?
Can anyone remind me the last time Charlton weren't desperately short of another striker? I can't remember - was there a time when we were able to look at the squad list and say "you know what, the team looks like it has plenty of goals; I hope we don't bid for another striker"?
  • Whenever Derek Hales, Clive Mendoncca or Darren Bent played I thought we would score, but you are right in nearly 50 years of supporting them I cannot rember us being overloaded with good strikers at the same time.

When we had Hales, Flanagan and Powell in the team I was always confident we'd score at least 2 or 3 goals per game. Unfortunately, I was always confident that we'd leak 3 or 4 goals per game.

I must admit that because I usually access this site via my i-phone, I hadn't seen that image of Delort (above) close up. Upon looking at it using the laptop, he does look like a bit of a tit.

Judging by his other tattoo though, he really loves Father Christmas.

The days of 2-3-5 or whatever it was.....I actually think we could have a relatively high goal scoring season (but we do need more players). However, I've also got the feeling we may concede more than previous years. But, I'm not expecting us to go up, so if we could be entertained then it's a successful season for me. Especially at home. I respect the way Powell dug out great away victories during his reign, but I would quite happily swap the odd 1-0 win away for some cracking home wins.

I can remember having Hales, Flanagan and Martin Robinson in the same team; all capable of scoring fifteen goals or more a season.

  • Leicester "used" our player - Rosler

    Posted at 15:20
Wigan Athletic manager Uwe Rosler believes Leicester City "used" the club's midfielder James McArthur.
A fee was agreed for McArthur, 26, to join the Foxes, only for the newly promoted side to sign free-agent Esteban Cambiasso late on Thursday.
"We didn't accept the pay structure and then Leicester left James in limbo," says Rosler. "I feel sorry for James. He got used in a way and we and he have to live with that. It's unusual. I've never experienced that where a club agree a fee and then make no contact over pay structure.
"Now we have to make sure we get James right again. I feel for the lad because he had already said goodbye to everybody at the club."

  • just been on the Wigan site, only says McArthur gone to Leicester for around £7m. However I bow to H I's superior Knowledge, so- good news Wigan dont have so much dosh to spend.

It aint over till the fat lady sings, an I feel it will probably go to the wire, ie Monday - also think we are still in with a decent chance.

PS. was reported 2 days ago 'Wigan close to signing A.D' but still no news, so they are going through the same shenanigans we have been through for the last 2 weeks!

When was the last time we had a striker as manager?

When we had Fuller, Haynes, Kermorgant, Wright-Phillips and Obika? I think we scored 65 that season in the league (2012/13) and I don't recall thinking that we needed any more forwards. Of course, within months we only had Kermorgant and then not even him.

Like many people, I think, I have Tucudean down as "not proven", so I do think we need another one now even if we don't have injuries.

Tees/Treacy, Hales/Flanagan, Hales/Walsh, Hunt/Mendonca, come to mind but the whole point is until recent years how many clubs had more than 2 top strikers. It's only in recent years football has become a squad game, in the old days you had your 1st team & then a reserve team of youngsters & those not good enough to be first teamers. Even now it's only the top clubs who have 3/4 quality strikers, the rest of us have an Igor +1 & are backed up by a Simon Church or a Piggott. Hopefully our +1 will sign in the next couple of days & George will get splinters for some of the game (as he tends to already I suppose?)

I would agree with the 'not proven' from what I have seen and heard from others.

For the record, having experienced and thoroughly enjoyed the Hales/Flanagan era, I firmly believe that if things had been different with Hunt/Mendonca they would have eclipsed any other partnership bar none.

In the 99/00 season Andy hunt scored 24 League goals only a small % of these were at home.

We were at palace and this tall guy(in the charlton end) started booing when hunt's name was read out so being a loyal cafc fan i got on my soapbox and gave it large about getting behind the player. I can't remember the score but andy did have a poor game and tall guy's smug look at the end made me wonder about my judgement.

Two weeks later Andy Hunt announced he was taking a break from football and subsequently retired due to chronic fatigue syndrome.

With the McArthur sale falling through for Wigan, I think it just leaves us and Wolves tbh (And the other 500 clubs). The Vossen 'rumour' was a typical misunderstanding. The guy who mentioned him just said he thinks it's a possibility so yeah not happening.

You'd like to think we would sign Delort considering we've agreed terms etc, but if Wolves end up signing Delort instead it will be interesting to see what we do. I think we have Bulot and I'd be happy with that from what I've seen but would like another signing too.
  • I wouldn't rule out Wigan just yet. McArthur is linked with a move to Palace now so may still move on.

Also I've read through the Wigan Delort thread and they are in the same situation as us, bid rejected trying to see it out. One of their posters is also worried that they seem to be purely relying on signing Delort. So very similar.

Haha - very good there Norfolk. People exposed to this thread are now so confused, they don't know what's going on.
  • Just call me Colin , if you've read this before , but i can't remember what i have/ have not read on this thread, taken from Wiggie message board.

Tours made an official statement this morning on the situation regarding striker Andy Delort.

“There have been a number of rumours that suggest Andy Delort is going everywhere in Europe (Germany, England, Belgium, Spain, France…) since the beginning go the transfer window. The latest has been suggesting that he has found an agreement with English side Wigan. At the moment, not a single agreement has been found with this club, even if discussions are ongoing. Discussions are also underway with several other clubs. A more important offer has been made by another British side, one which includes a club partnership which is very interesting for the youth system at Tours. The window is not closed, and official informations will be communicated via the club’s official website.”
