  • My first away game was in the wrong end! My Grandpa was a WBA fan and took me to The Hawthorns to watch them play us. We won 1-0 courtesy of Rob Lee so I was happier than he was.

Colchester away in the cup. Can't remember what year but was early 80s.
We won 1-0 with an own goal I think.

We got battered for most of the match, I think Hales got sent off. Dickenson put in a last minute cross that a defender put between the keepers legs. Didn't even make the back of the net, it was very muddy. Away end was packed and the stand began to fall apart, remember planks of wood being passed down to the front.
  • That's the one.
Don't remember hales getting sent off but remember the stand falling to pieces and the goal.

Blackburn 1-0 Charlton. Ewood park. Duff scored for them

Luke Young missed a glorious chance near the end

A 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge. Christmas 1975.

Apart from Hales's goals I remember it being bloody cold on that open terrace.

Feck me, that was nearly 40 years ago. Whatever did I do in a previous life?

    My first away game too.

No it was Shane Westley, if I remember his name correctly, who got sent off. I was sitting near his mum.

I think mine was in 1995 at The Den. I was eight years old. We were in the Millwall end with my dad's Millwall supporting mate. I remember jumping up when we scored only for my dad to stop me mid-jump to sit back down! I think we lost 3-1 that day to a good Millwall side with the likes of Alex Rae and Ben Thatcher.

Edit: Must have been this one -http://www.11v11.com/matches/millwall-v-charlton-athletic-08-april-1995-178040/
  • My first three away matches were...

    v Sunderland @ Wembley (4-4... 7-6 on pens)
    v Arsenal @ Highbury (4-2 win)
    v Liverpool @ Anfield (1-0 win)

My next Away games for seven years (until we beat Southend 2-1 all ended in draw or defeat... and it began so so well lol!)

For a competitive game Watford at Vicarage Road February 1996. We won 2-1 after losing 0-1 at the break. John Robinson and Lee Bowyer with our goals that day. I had been to friendlies at Gillingham and Welling before that.

  • Wembley play off final if that counts. If it doesn't, 3-2 win over Coventry in the cup in 2000.

    It's all been downhill since...

QPR circa 70/71 and we won 4-1. Me and dad stood in the Loft. Charlton everywhere causing havoc

I remember my old man taking me to that one too as my first away game (aged about 12). I thought it a bit bizarre at the time as we had not won away for 30 odd games and recall it all being a bit surreal the way we dominated QPhaha that day.
  • Palarse in '77 I think, the game was a 1-1 draw. The thing I remember most though was on entering the ground, the sight of a police portakabin literally overflowing with cherry red DM's and loads of Charlton (and Palarse) stood on the terrace in their socks. Didn't stop the punch ups though, it was going off all game...

Was this the one when Steve Gritt scored our equaliser in the 2nd half? Went to Palace away around that time and we went in the holmesdale end. It was brilliant watching the Charlton hordes up the other end going mental after the goal and then singing the ground down for the last 15 mins or so.

We played in the yellow and blue bukta kit that day I think
  • Highbury, 88 or 89. Lost 3 or 4-0. Perry "tintin" Groves played, I think and Siggi Jonsson may have even scored for them???
  • Reading away 97/98...... We lost 2-0 and Rufus hit the bar, which was bent. It was at their old elm park which made wellings ground look state of the art. Biggest cheer of the day was when it emerged Chelsea had put 7 past spurs!!!!

1998 Play off final v Sunderland. We managed to scrape a win on penalties. We took plenty that day... I reckon over 10,000 of us in the away end.
  • West Ham in October 1987 - drew 1-1. Still remember the sense of excitement entering the away end and hearing the first chant of 'South London La La La, South London La La La' - remember thinking it was quite an adventure going as an away fan to Upton Park.
  • Chelsea 2001 won 1-0, was only 7 and with my dad and his friend who was a chelski fan sitting in home stand and being 7 I did the word possible thing.. Cheered when charlton scored.. Oops.
  • London matches: (can't remember the order of these) v Chelsea 1983, lost 3-2, paul canonville scoring the winner for them. Had walked into the shed end my mistake owing to very poor signage, with Charlton scarf and little brother but got let in the away end fairly quickly, not without getting some abuse from fans and steward.
Fulham away- covered above, Paul Curtis winner.

    Outside london;
Colchester away, fa cup in January, 1-0 win, constant crowd surges and crushing, think the low wall at the front went over.

Far outside london: Swansea away, feb. 1984- thought this could be our last ever game. Lost 1-0. Denied penalty in last minute. Thought I'd never go away again but did plenty after that.

Hey, I was there with my Dad that day too. Fantastic day, but also a bit worrying given the Chelsea fans well-earned reputation for violence.
My first on my own was Gillingham in 1983 (!?). We won 1-0 surviving a late onslaught.

  • Mid 90's game down at Loftus Road against QPR. We beat them 2 - 1.

Right back, Gary Poole scored an absolute worldly from 25 yards and then Bradley Allen scored the winner against his old club.

    Ah, memories...

Was mine aswell. Remember Salmon had a worldy performance aswell.

That Gary Poole goal was smashing, pretty sure that was his debut.
  • Nottingham Forest, 98/99. 1-0 win, I think.

Can't remember many details but it was QPR sometime in the late 90s, we lost.

Edit: text my dad and he says it was actually a 0-0 but he can't remember the season, im sure someone on here could tell me.
  • Leyton Orient in 1960. 1-1 with our goal scored by Stuart Leary.
  • My first and only away with my dad was Ireland v England at Wembley in 77. My dad took me to many games at The Valley, he was working on the tower bloke that became Sam Bartram House, he never went to an away game. My first away game following Charlton, I think was Ipswich away in the Cup in '81.
  • Wimbledon at Plough Lane, probably around 1986/7. 1-1, Robert Lee scored first, Fashanu equalised. Grim game, cold, dark, miserable. Got lost on the way home, didn't tell my Dad as he wasn't too pleased about me going on my own in the first place. Ah, the memories.

  • The Spurs cup match at WHL in 84.
