can't get my head around the need for people to display every bloody part of their boring lives to friends, families and strangers.
and who on earth started it?
"c'mon Charmaine, just a little bit more for mummy. hang on, why don't I take a picture of this and let others see what I'm doing cos it's just so like natural and I want others to share the bond I'm sharing with my baby on the privacy of this train."
Totally agree, some people make me teeth itch!! ffs
Didn't know anything about this until I saw a news report on it earlier. I don't get it. I know we live in a vain generation that's selfie obsessed but it's taking it a bit far. I get that it's a beautiful, natural thing but why put it on social media. It's a private interaction between a mother & child. The conception is a natural process but you wouldn't put that on Facebook....although, I'm sure some people would!!! Anyway, rant over. I'm off to reclaim my penis & talk about football & beer!!
My missus didn't breast feed cos my little girl wouldnt take to it. I understand all the "it's not natural..blah blah blah" but her being on formula meant we knew exactly how much she was getting and also meant I could help with getting up for feeds rather than my missus needing to get up every time. If we have another then we won't even try breast feeding.

I thought there is a contraption that can extract milk from the breast, enabling it to be stored so dad can help with the feeding.......
I 'fess up to being a long time breasts and nipple admiring man of taste .. amongst other parts of the wonderful female anatomy ((:>) (err and the feminine mind of course .. shhhhh ... I put that in to keep the peace)

Rarely work too well and still involves the mum getting knackd which sometimes isn't the best thing

Personally I just love the use of the word 'contraption' in this context. But yes, you're right, pumps are available and are widely used.
I breast fed all but one of my kids, the one that i didn't has been the one with all the immunity problems, I don't think its a coincidence, I told the health visitor this back when I lived in Slade green, she invited me to be a speaker at the breast feeding workshop for expectant mums at the Lincoln close childrens centre, I happily obliged. I was faced with 35 expectant mums average age was 20, when asked at the start of the work shop who were planning on breast feeding only a third were and they were the more mature of the group, the others thought it would be painful, or embarrassing or most commonly exclusive of their partners. At the end we were up to 2 thirds but the younger mums were still unconvinced. These workshops are good and informative but I feel if other young mums (selfie generation) would publish that it's not embarrassing, it's beautiful and something to be proud of it would turn the heads for the better for more of that generation, overly benefitting more babies.
I must admit I opened this thread with some excitement which quickly turned in to disappointment - when I fully processed the lack of pictures and began to read it I quickly thought "What the...? Just why?". However, after reading that it makes a great deal of sense.
Unsurprisingly, as a guy in his early twenties I wasn't actually aware of the benefits of breast feeding. A quick Google shows quite a good article from the NHS and it does make a lot of sense to breast feed.
Your real issue is target audience; on a football forum you've got a diverse audience, but the target population isn't well represented! You're targeting young mothers; I doubt there are too many on here! So the feedback may not quite represent what young mothers feel!
I think it's quite a noble idea to entice more young mothers to breast feed, and a large chunk of persuading people to do things comes from social acceptance. Demonstrating that peers do things makes it acceptable. There also more likely to look up -why- people do things too.
Personally, I dislike selfies but always seem to have a few cheeky ones when I'm pissed, dribbling and incoherent - so maybe I hate them for reasons of self preservation.

It really is, better lucky. Some advantages that not everyone knows, Mum gets her figure back quicker and better as it contracts everything back into shape. Mum don't need other contraception as breast feeding releases a hormone that acts as a contraceptive. Baby gets all the mums immunities which keeps them safe from nasties until they have their own jabs.
Im sorry Sadie you cant turn around and say children that arent breastfed will suffer immunity problems. Such a sweeping statement. I really didnt want to get into a breastfeeding discussion on a football board but It just doesnt work for some people and becomes painful for both the mother and child. doesnt meant to say that child will then suffer for it.
my missus is a midwife and is also 21 weeks pregnant, big advocate of breast feeding and it's definitely better for the baby if women can breast feed.....not all babies take to it though and not all women enjoy it, it's definitely each to their own and she would never judge anyone at all.

Yeah, that is really useful. However I think you'll find that in most cases the fact that the Mum us completely knackered from getting no sleep and having their baby suck all of the 'goodness' and energy out of them at a time when they are so, so tired they feel like they could cry at any second is contraception enough.
"Yes hold on Honey, let me just get the baby down and I'll gulp a glass of wine and I'll be right up to give you some sex!"
A little more like:
"Are you f**king joking? I haven't slept for six hours straight for f**king weeks. I am tired; I am hungry; my nipples are red raw. If you come, anywhere, near me with that f**king thing out of your pants I shall cut it off!"
;-)
However, on the subject I think breast feeding is important. I have nothing against those that don't, and my wife struggled with it - but persevered for a month at which point our (her) midwife said the initial benefit of doing so was done.
Taking photos of breast feeding is completely understandable. It is something that you will want to remember for the rest of your life - no more so, or less so than anything that your child does. However I would be appalled if even my closest friend thought to share a photo of herself (of his wife) breast feeding. Showing these photos to a complete stranger (or all your facebook friends) is wrong, in my view. I can't understand how anyone sensible you think differently, personally.
I also don't believe that showing off photos of it would encourage any other mother to breast feed. That sounds like the last attempt to justify it when all the real reasons have been rubbished.

I'm not sure about the contraception point. My recollection whn we had our kids is that the midwife / health visitor wanted to kill our doctor when he gave my wife this advice. She said it was not true, not saying Sadie is wrong but suggest you speak to your health advisors before you throw away the tablets or whatever you use.

She didn't say that actually, but it is a fact that breastfeeding helps babies develop their immunity system better than formula does, and in particular against respiratory illnesses, meningitis and other serious problems. Mothers produce milk for a reason, and it's because it provides the best nourishment for their child and gives them the best chance of developing the things they need - and of course it changes as the baby develops.
No one's going down the line of looking down on those who don't breastfeed, I totally get the issue you're talking about as one of my best mates suffered really badly - but isn't it a bit shocking than 2/3 of the women in Sadie's workshop had decided not to breastfeed their kids before they were born and before even giving it a go?

Not the most shocking thing I've ever heard to be honest Rik

I never for one minute meant that all children if not breast fed will suffer immunity problems but that breast feeding helps, Naturally some women will have problems then it's a matter of finding the best milk substitute for your baby and there are many good substitutes. I believe breast is best but understand completely why a lot of women either choose to bottle feed or just have no choice, what a lot of people say is the first 3 days are the most important as that is when they get most of the immunities from mum and usually if mum is going to feel pain or discomfort it will be after a few days anyway. It's worth a try but it's always mums decision please don't feel offended by what I said and I apologise to anyone I offended.

It doesn't prevent immunity problems, it reduces the risk of them rather - which I think is what Sadie said anyway. Which is why the NHS seems to recommend breastfeeding.
This has been studied extensively and published in numerous scientific journals. Some of those publications even suggest that the benefits live quite long in to the child's life, affecting their immune system in to adolescence or adulthood.
I can understand saying that it has the potential to become painful for the mother - but I can't see how the potential immune system benefits can be argued. Which is irrelevant anyway, as I don't see this as shaming women who don't wish to breastfeed - but more encouraging those who haven't considered it.
A reason why a lot of young mothers are put off breast-feeding is the fact that formula milk is big money for some very rich people who contort themselves to fund studies that will 'prove' their product is miles better than breast-feeding and then they'll arrange for the results of the article to be disseminated through the appropriate channels e.g. woman's magazines in order to nudge girls away from breast-feeding and towards their product.
In the other corner are just a bunch of mums who want to tell other mums how wonderful it is to breast-feed, but without the money to fund studies or adverts. Not exactly a fair fight.
thank you so much lucky reds for your insight! I cannot be bothered to explain any further on here. Sadie has said she didn't mean how it sounded to me. So I'll just leave it there.

In a survey of fathers, there is a growing number who would prefer to be present during conception.

Breastfeeding Yes. Selfies No.
Attention seeking whilst pretending that its for a cause.

No need to breast feed these days - times change, we have more efficient methods of feeding our children.

Nothing wrong with breast feeding, as long as it stops at a reasonable age. Women who breast feed kids after a certain age are just weird. "Bitty"
