McIlroy currently holds 2 of golf's 4 majors, is world number 1 and won a global event last week. He's not just Britain's best currently, he's one of the world's very best, and that's coming from someone who's never particularly liked him.
@Greenie Jonathan Rea would have something to say about that!
The better of those Triatholon brothers has a claim on this.
Alistair Brownlee is an absolute machine... I've only seen him at the Commonwealth Games in the team event but he blew the opposition away on the final leg, was just embarrassing

Yes indeed he would RP, but he's not been World Champ (yet), also Sykes won on an under par Kawasaki and developed the bike as well so thats been a plus for Rea too. For me Superbikes is the best motorsport out there.
If golf is a sport, then shooting certainly is ffs
I'd put shooting in with darts, poker and knitting.
The world knitting champion is a good shout, cant remember his name
Hasn't a judge ruled that Bridge is a sport now?
It's quite difficult to find much info about though. There's a Cup called The Buffett Cup (yes that's right) modelled on the Ryder Cup it seems. It was scheduled for Monaco last year but was cancelled because the USA team couldn't agree how their team was to be chosen so didn't pitch up! Bridge must need some sort of FIFA equivalent it seems.
Pretty good list if you add A Brownlee, might argue over Froome/Wiggins order if judged on several recent years and not 'today'. Some of it does depend on the quality of and size of the opposition which possibly counts out Hamilton
Vettel and Alonso are probably top 10 racers of all time Lewis has been up against, same as Murray has been against Fed/Nadal/Djok. Unfair to disqualify him on that regard and Lewis would be number 1 for me.

Just not enough competition. To participate in the sport you need to be pretty well off from certain countries and have opportunities. That's why cycling and rowing are out the window for this.
Brownlee and Farah are undoubtedly the best in their events, and have been undisputed world number ones for a while now. Tough to judge , Brownlee is multi disciplined which adds an edge, but Farah's events are more established and have more global appeal.
McIlroy and Murray are world class but not undisputed world number ones like the two above

Well McIlroy is literally the number one golfer in the world.
