Poor decision. Glut of T20 cricket at the expense of county championship and test matches all for money. Big bash has hardly improved Australian international cricket so why would it here. Will Yorkshire fans pay to see Yorkshire Vikings at Headingly or the Leeds Legends? Yorkshire of course.
If the money gets handed round, it's better... But to really maximise the comp it would need to be on free to air telly. Otherwise, it will be even more like the usual crowd at the oval for a t20. I went there with work, and only a few of us even liked cricket. Saw the same all over the ground. As an Essex fan I don't know if I'd support anyone (depends if any essdx players get to play) but if it was on the telly I'd watch it, like the ipl used to be
I go to watch a lot of cricket, mainly County Championship. I can't imagine any way that I will go to see a T20 Franchise game. But, I do realise my £200 per year membership of Sussex is a drop in the ocean and that I prefer different cricket from the many. It's easy, as I have done, to get pompous and say it's not proper cricket but there is a generation growing up who will think the County Championship is not proper cricket soon, I fear.
The £1.5m will seem like a windfall to the financially struggling counties, but that will soon disappear as the best players get bigger fees.
I like T20. People have busy lives and the simple fact is that T20 fits well in this. I'd have kept the teams as counties - maybe adding two or three - like Ireland etc...

I guess that's the exchange rate these days, £1.5m = 30 pieces of silver.
I can't see myself going to the Oval to support the London Knobjobs, surrounded by twats guzzling expensive piss-beer who barely notice what goes on out in the middle.

This is great news. Now I can go to the T20, drink expensive beer and completely disregard what's going on in the middle without the experience being ruined by some boring bloke sat behind me, with his packed sandwiches and scorecard telling me to sit down and stop enjoying myself.
And since they are still keeping the county T20 competition it means the 20 or so people left in the country who still enjoy county cricket can go and watch that.
I really don't see how this can be fitted in in 2018 unless we tell Aus or India to FO. Committed internationals May-June - Pakistan in England (2 Tests) June - Australia in England (5 ODIs, 1 T20) June-September - India in England (5 Tests, 5 ODIs, 1 T20)

2019 we are hosting the world cup
Strange to playing Pakistan at home again, after only 2 years later!
I imagine the T20 will take place before the Indian Test series starts, as presumably India will be here for 2/3 weeks before the first Test

this would almost certainly mean cancelling the Aus ODI'S. Is that likely
I suspect that the games will take place during the time we play India in Tests. Our Test side, at that time, will almost certainly have a backbone of 4/5 day specialists - for example Cook, Haseeb Ahmed who hasn't even played a domestic one day or T20 game (if he proves to be Cook's long term opening partner) and even Root.
Equally, if you look at the side that played in the T20 against Pakistan the likes of Hales, Roy, Buttler, Morgan, Willey, Plunkett, Jordan and Rashid probably won't be in our Test side. Any of these that are plus the likes of Stokes and Root will no doubt be compensated with enhanced central contracts.

No way will the T20s clash with the Test matches, they wouldn't want the distraction, if this is to be a big 3 week event

I completely agree. Cricket is a distraction from the beersnake competition.

You could do that already to be fair. Feed the snake!

The Oval has reusable cups now, so beer snakes RIP
For me the solution would be to keep the county system for T20s but spilt it into 3 groups rather than 2 this will mean the group games can be fit into a smaller period of time. Have it all in one 4 week block, in the summer holidays. Have the final at the Olympic stadium.
A full international break for that 4 week period so every England player is available for their counties, and the same number (2) of overseas players.
Remember the people who go to this aren't really cricket fans. They go to 1 or 2 T20 games a season. This isn't gonna suddenly make them start going regularly or make them check a teams scores online or start following 4 day cricket or playing club cricket. Nope it's the cricket fans who bring their children along and create cricket fans that feeds all forms of the game.
I have said my piece on why I think this will be bad for English domestic and international cricket further up this thread. I will say no more than that. Other than to add I will boycott this new competition and will continue to support Surrey in the existing T20 and will enjoy seeing the young up and coming English players get given a chance in that competition (which they won't in this new all singing all dancing city based wankfest).
Ok, just re-read it, and it seems that the grounds will be Test venues, so that rules out Bristol , but means that it possibly brings in Chester-le-street.Although cant see London North or South being excluded because of them.
Comment from Simon Hughes... Former Middlesex seamer and BBC Test Match Special commentator Simon Hughes: "So the county chairmen have seen the future and voted for it 16-3... eureka." Virtually all the cricket world have posted positive comments. Aggers says... 'its only Charlton fans who seem not to want it'
Can you not understand why I am not happy with this Pres?
Plenty of people in the football world were positive about the Premier League.
If Charlton were to be absorbed into South London Rovers playing at Selhurst for FA cup games only (having won the FA cup twice in three years under their own identity), would you be happy?
How the heck can a bunch of non-English players bring a boost to English cricket? Playing at test venues only, backs up what I previously stated, that the rich will get richer.
Where I a member at Northants I would be shouting down the phone at the short sighted idiots who voted in favour for what will amount to petty cash in their back pockets.
Just got back to this thread.
Yes, of course i understand your point AA.
A couple of major things... 1) Cricket is very different to football - cricket is less parochial and passionate than football - supporters generally want 1) Their national team to win and counties 2nd - to me, anything which makes our international level players better, then i'm for it. 2) You cant compare T20 Cricket to the Premiership for one huge reason - most of the world dont play cricket - and also, none of the rest of Europe plays it - that way, there will always be at least 7 players for each team from or qualified for England - it wont ever get like Arsenal/Man City Chelsea where there are no Englnad players in the team. Even now, there are on average 2 overseas players
As i said, most of the cricket 'experts' have stated that this is the future, and that this will improve England players-im not disputing that.
Personally don't like the idea. However be interested to see how it fits round the rest of the calendar. Do the other cricketers, which wil be most first class players, put their feet up for 3 weeks?
So, lets look after the 300 players who will never play for England or try to raise the skill level of the ones who might ? i just dont get it.

Ah hem, Australia has been No 1 in the Test rankings until very recently until Pakistan overtook them. Before that, India were top.

It's very tight up there though, several countries are very close.
As for white ball cricket, England don't seem to have problems producing decent ODI/T20 players using the current county system, and indeed just broke the world record for the highest ODI score!
If the UK version of the Big Bash is marketed as cleverly and consistently as it is here, then you are going to have a juggernaut on your hands.
What you have to appreciate is that the in-ground atmosphere and match day experience is totally targeted at families/young kids - and they do it brilliantly.
It makes cricket attractive to the under 11's, and if you look at some of the stats coming out of where cricket's popularity stands in the UK at the moment, that is going to be vital moving forward.
I totally get the resistance to change etc, but as long as you take the 'Big Bash' for what it is - a bit of fun, razzmatazz and a good night out, then there should be no problem.
The audiences for traditional cricket and big bash, are totally different.
The sort of drunk crowds that are at the Oval , i certainly wouldnt take my under 11.
Regularly been to the Oval to see Kent v Surrey and never have I felt people were drinking to excess whereby they were intimidating families that were visiting.
Usually been worse on Test Match when people have the opportunity to be drinking all day.

Ah yes, the post tea beer snake session at Test matches!
Watching T20 in this country, it all seems a bit half hearted. The flame throwing machines, the same tiny selection of music wherever you go - do they all have to use the same songs everywhere?
