Glad it's back open as its the pub that convinced my Dad and me to start getting the train rather than driving. Always look forward to coming in and having a few pints whilst watching the football on the big screen

Sorry I didn't get to meet you last night scruffle. I met your colleague Louis though and I have forgotten the ladies name. Glad to see the wine had improved since I was last in there which was a long time ago so maybe Lee and Bernie had improved it. It was Blossom Hill last time.. an insult to anyone that even likes the smell of a wine.

Tho I do not like the smell of wine today... dying here.

Anyway best of luck with the pub. Charlton is crying out for a decent pub for the locals and I'm sure you guys can sort it.

Right.. im off to look for a quiet part of the office for a sleep.

Two Bombadiers first home game of the season, please (obviously, not both for me). Always in the Bugle before and after the game on matchday.

At the moment we've kept it as it was beers wise but will be rotating the ales once I know what the locals want. Got a few craft beers by the bottle, drinkable wine and bit more extensive spirit range.

Staff wise, I've got new fresh faces but there were a few of the old staff been told were quite good so open to welcoming them back...

    Get London Lager in!
I'd love too, serve it my other pub but not sure I could get away with charging a fiver a pint in Charlton!!! Will be interesting to see how much longer it's actually brewed in Greenwich now they're bought by sab Miller.
That's me done with drinking Meantime.

@scruffle best of luck with The Bugle. I'll be sure to pop in next season.

    Update on Charlton Champion.......
    http://charltonchampion.co.uk/2015/06/10/nine-months-to-prove-a-new-look-bugle-horn-can-work-charlton-can-we-save-this-historic-pub/
Bit of a spat beetween a few people on this...... but hopefully they can unite to help this pub survive. I have alway's found the Bugle a very supportive pub, and helped the Supporters trust on a number of occassions, for that alone I will be always grateful. When my family literally lived across the road it holds an affectionate memory to myself of the Village community. I wish both the pubs well, and hope that they survive. But it is a harsh industry to be in, and will need energy, and some creativity to adapt, as well as be a sustainable business. I certainly will be visiting the pub whenever I can.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Meantime now. Hopefully Miller will maintain a hands off approach, as Budweiser do with the craft brewery they own, Goose Island.

Looking forward to sampling a few bevvies the reborn Bugle. Hope it's a big success!

I kind of knew the tone of the article would upset a few of the regulars.

I frequented The Bugle an awful lot on match days & I would say the tone, may be a touch harsh, but was generally correct.

There were signs up in there for years, saying that you had to buy at least 2 drinks, whilst watching the football or you could piss off. Welcoming ?

You often had to sit in the dark, in the back room, watching the football, because if you asked them to switch the lights on, they said they would get round to it, but rarely did.

I always used to say hello to Lee, but never ever, got so much as a smile back, or even an acknowledgement.

He used to open the back room after games started, because they were too busy to do so, whilst standing around doing not much.

When they closed the back room, it was because of the expense to clean it (he said), although I don't think it was ever cleaned in about 20 years. I found stuff on the floor going back that far.

You had to share the back room, with old ice cream fridge freezers, motor bikes ............

Basically, the Guinness, lager and beer was excellent and it showed the football.

I know Lee is not a well man & hope he pulls through, but that doesn't alter the facts.

Sorry to hear that covered end. I hope Lee pulls through as well. Bugle will always be one of the top pubs in Charlton in recent years!

I've only discovered the Bugle Horn in the last couple of seasons but it has quickly become a pre-match favourite. Service is good and enjoy the fact it shows the two early games. Imagine it would be much better to have the big screen in the back room.
Good luck @scruffle and hope the changes work out.

Good to meet you earlier Scruffle - I really hope that you make a go of the Bugle as Charlton Village is crying out for a decent pub. I will be looking in from time to time now I know you're there and hopefully you'll have the ales sorted next time around!

@scruffle reckons the place needs another £700k spending on it to bring it up to modern hygiene standards and make it habitable. A massive commitment for anyone looking to buy it outright.

I hope that The Bugle thrives. It's got so much going for it. Was once a very nice smart pub. Hope it comes back.

I'd be interested to have a breakdown of those costs, it must be in a right state.

Modern hygiene is a bit of a misquote!! I ment bring it up to modern standards (look and feel) rather than hygiene wise, that's all above board, got inspected yesterday from council and got a 4 star out of 5, only 2 leaking taps away from a 5 start!!!

After our last refurbed pub where we spent 700k, looking at this one, needs 500k just refurbing downstairs, bar, kitchen, toilets, function room, rear outside space, redoing front and outside of building, rewiring of all electrics, etc... Upstairs there's a potential 9 bedrooms, that's a further 200k and maybe a lot more if wanted to convert upstairs into flats or hotel/rooms to let.

You could quite easily spend 150k on 'tart/freshen' up but would then need to do this every 2-3years, it's a bloody old building in parts!!

Am I the only one that reads Pornhub here?

You "read" PornHub? Is that in the same way that I used to buy Mayfair and Club just to read the motoring articles?!

I understand that the game of Musical Chairs continues. Sadly, @scruffle is no longer in the Bugle and that the bloke who was previously in the now closed White Swan has been parachuted into the Bugle to run it! You really couldn't make this up and it's extremely sad that Steve was not able to make it work. I'd be interested to hear his take on what he was up against.

£1.5 million for the freehold? That's not bad, you could get a lot of flats on that plot.
