Because of Villneuve, Canada is a home from home for Ferrari. Vettel knew that and played to it. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. It isn't about his move, I would be happy if the rule was changed. But the way he has reacted to the application of a rule should not be allowed to stand. We saw similar last season with Verstappen. F1 has to get his its house in order in this respect. It should demand Vettel makes a public apology with the threat of a points deduction if he doesn't. Don't worry, he would definitely do it.
It is true that Ferrari would have to be able to offer race wins, but it is also likely Hamilton would have won the title last season in a Ferrari and would be up there this in one too. Vettel knows that in his heart and it irks him. He is as quick as Hamilton for sure, but he just lacks his race craft.1 -

Hamilton is in total tune with his car, is a better racer, and manages a race at a higher level. Vettel is good, but Hamilton is the best driver in the world.6 -

Among other things, he highlights the near identical incident: https://youtu.be/jgOVofdZjv4
between Verstappen and Raikonnen last year, where Verstappen also left and rejoined the track and also received a 5 second penalty. Ferrari (Raikonnen’s team at the time) conveniently didn’t dispute that decision. Not only that, Vettel himself came out in support of the penalty saying that the following driver shouldn’t have to take evasive action as a result of the leading drivers error.
Palmer also makes the great point that Vettel’s histrionics are a manipulative stunt, making sure all of the headlines were about how hard done by he is and using the outrage of fans wanting to see a good hard fought race, to distract from the fact that he himself was entirely to blame for losing the race.2 -
Vettel should have been grateful at his luck that his mistake didn't put him out of the race!1
-
If the situation was reversed and it was Lewis that had made the mistake, then Vettel would have been squealing like a little girl.1
-
Hamilton would have had a moan and complained, but he wouldn't have behaved like a little kid. That's for sure.0

Unfortunately, it is this skill that shows that he was in control of the situation and could have let through Hamilton if he wanted too. But that is not the thought of a racing driver. What he did was probably instinctive, but he is a professional racing driver. He made two mistakes.
IMO this rule is correct and should stay. The driver most at risk is the driver that is blocked. Hamilton or his car could easily have been taken out.0 -
Cars are not designed to run on grass, skill or no skill, he could have easily gone out of the race.1

Back to the present...
Hamilton gets another pole position today.
In other news:
Ferrari’s appeal pretty much got laughed out of the office yesterday, and rightly so.
Vettel seems like he’s been stomping around like a bear with a sore paw this weekend.
Today he had a hissy fit during Q3 - complaining about a ‘missed upshift’ which suggests a problem with the car, but looks like it was just that he made a mistake. Again.
All points to him continuing to behave like a massive spoilt brat who is still crying about not getting his way.
Cherry on the cake - Vettel qualifies in 7th. Lovely.4 -

Pleased that McLaren seem to be going in the right direction at last.2

I think Ferrari were believing their own pre-season testing hype and have been found sadly lacking since it got serious. Now everyone in red is getting frustrated and looking for someone to blame!
Excellent result for McLaren and Lando!0 -
Haven’t really heard Lando speak much until today. He really does seem like a switched on, levelheaded guy. Really impressive for his age.
Obviously quite a talent on the track too!
Hopefully he’ll be a force in the future.0 -
This race perfectly sums up the season so far. Mind numbingly dull.3

I make it 1988 the last time the same constructor won the first 8 races.0 -

There’s plenty to find interesting in F1 at the moment, whether it’s tactics, tyre management, team orders, racing rules and penalties, midfield battles, drivers having to fight their car’s faults (like Norris did today), the list goes on.
If the only thing you’re interested in is the drivers championship, then obviously you’re going to be disappointed that Hamilton is streaking away. It seems that a lot of people are just desperate to say F1 is boring, but if they were to look further than just ‘who wins the race and how easily did they win it’, they’ll find a lot of interesting stuff.
ps - apologies to @Leeds_Addick - nothing personal, it’s just your comment was the latest of these types of comment, either on CL or elsewhere, that make this tired old point.1 -

I just love seeing a Brit dominating.4 -

It's not like I have anything against Lewis in particular, I thought the whole of last season was brilliant and Ferraris collapse and Sebs spins made it exciting. But this year Merc are so far ahead that every race just seems like a parade.0 -
Mercedes have, like last season, won some races they shouldn't have. However, they have been the best package in most and whilst Ferrari have the best engine, it is known that they have designed a car that it is difficult to improve so effectively they have no chance this year and Hamilton has a free pass to another title. And yes, it is a bit boring! If I was advising Hamilton, next season is the best time for him to join Ferrari.

I thought the main problem yesterday was the track. Absolutely soul destroying and hard on the eyes. The title is Hamilton’s to lose now, he is so dominant and added to his car, probably only Botas could get close but I can’t see that happening.0

That's more like it. Fantastic race and brilliant ending.1

Very good race that. Good win for Verstappen. Feel a bit sorry for Leclerc, he drove well.

Nothing wrong with that move at all. Verstappen was on the inside and fully alongside if not a bit ahead. It’s his corner and his line. Leclerc can’t expect to just drive round the outside - I always teach my son in his racing that just get yourself fully up the inside.... it’s then your corner and you take your normal line (ie drive to the outside of the exit). The other driver has to either get out of it or they run out of road2

Great race. Well done to Verstappen.0

The result stands, which is the right decision in my opinion. Totally different scenario to Canada.0
