It’s not easy, but it’s the right thing to do.
What about the option of “he says something, becomes an ally and advocate for change in sport and society as a whole”?

And if his missus and family don’t like it then it says more about them than him. I’m all for supporting those close to you but not at the cost of all morals and what’s right.

A bit of short term hassle from the missus (or even a breakup) is nothing compared to the racist crap people have had to suffer.
  • The idea that there Max would face any serious repercussions if he took a stand is ludicrous.

His team wouldn’t do anything other than fully support him, the same for his sponsors and F1.

Piquet would be pissed, and maybe the daughter, but if she thinks sticking up for her racist father is more important that supporting Max, then maybe he’s dodged a bullet.

Unless of course he’s OK with a bit of casual racism.

You think he's going to go against his girlfriend and future father in law so soon? No chance, he'll just ignore the questions for now
I'm not saying it's simple, but you said "All Max can do"  which isn't true. We all have choices around these kinds of things. And I bet we've all stayed silent sometimes when we should have spoken up.
You seriously think he'll go against all of his advisors from RedBull, including people like Helmut Marko, Christian Horner, and then his dad, to come out and say "my future father in law is a racist piece of shit"?

All he can do is say nothing, because he will have been backed into a corner by a number of people about it. There isn't another option for him, there are too many negatives for him both professionally and personally for it to be feasible and realistic for him to speak up about it right now.

But I'm sure you see it as just another way he's a c**t, because the anti Max brigade out in full force, as per usual.

If this was any other driver on the grid, they'd either not be expected to speak out about it either and will toe the "I'm here to race" line, or they'll have nothing to lose by saying it, because they won't be as ingrained in the story as Max currently is.
The fact it's Verstappen is irrelevant to my opinion on it. I don't expect him to do anything. The right thing to do is to say that racism is wrong. It's not always easy to do what is right. There have been times in my life when I have done what is easy rather than what is right. I wouldn't judge Verstappen if that is what he does. It doesn't make it right. It doesn't mean he doesn't have a choice.

Bernie Ecclestone showing himself up as the arsehole he really is with his comments today. Defends Putin's invasion of Ukraine and says Hamilton should just brush aside racist comments aimed at him.

I’m not able to view the video, but if MV has condemned Piquet’s bullshit, then fair play to him.
I’ve made my (negative) feelings on MV pretty clear in the past, but if he’s spoken out against Piquet despite being so closely connected to the family, then he deserves some respect.

He didn't condemn Piquet specifically but condemned racism in general.

Went to great lengths to mention the "younger generation" and "teaching it at school" thus excluding Piquet and all the other old duffers spouting shit.

Well, it seems I may have applauded MV a little too soon.
That interview is the bland non-critical statement I originally expected him to make, which is kind of understandable, but it’s fair to say I’m disappointed he wasn’t more critical.
I have to say, the Sky headline (which was all I could see) on their tweet made it sound like he’d called Piquet out as a racist prick. I guess I should’ve known better! 🙄

Unfortunately feels very much like the classical... Piquet was wrong to say what he said... BUT!!

No Max, no... there honestly doesnt need to be a but in this scenario - Just stop talking

I said he'd be better off saying nothing. And this is pretty much saying nothing, whilst also trying to say something on the matter

Over on Reddit quite a few Brazilians have explained there's no 'lost in translation' excuse for Piquet on this. He's managed to make a racist and homophobic remark simultaneously, and it boils my blood to see that fish faced fuck Verstappen doing exactly what I would expect him to do - say the thing that's going to irritate me the most by downplaying it. The craven little prick.
As a fellow Brazilian, I can also attest that there is no way, culturally or linguistically, that he meant to say this in an endearing manner that was somehow lost in translation.

He absolutely meant to call Lewis gay in a derogatory manner

As a fellow brazilian, I can testify that there's absolutely no way this can be translated different that what really is. He was never different than this piece of sh*t we're now having access to.

Absolutely mega qualifying. Didn't expect to see Sainz on pole before the session starts!

Its getting to the point where qualifying is more exciting than the race.

The fact that they are not showing any replays is ominous.

Looked bad as it flew along upside down in the background as they got away. Hopefully Zhou is ok.

Think that might be standard procedure until they confirm all the drivers involved are ok.

    Real shame for George Russell

This is concerning - normally news is received by now.

Fingers crossed all drivers, spectators and marshals are ok

Never like seeing a car flip into an impact - puts an emphasis on why the halo is so important

2 lives saved today by the halo. Probably has to go down as the greatest innovation in sport.

Christ that’s seriously scary. Watching on German tv so can’t understand anything they’re saying, but assuming Zhou’s ok as they’re showing replays now?
    Can someone please confirm?

They’ve shown Zhou sitting up with the medics. Seems shaken, obviously, but gave a thumbs up.
