  • Well Done Lewis Hamilton an incredible achievement. I don't particularly like him but you have to admire his achievements. To achieve what he has is undeniably outstaning.

Im not so technically minded about the ins and outs as others are on here and try to keep up to date with this thread but what I don't understand is the love in with George Russell? I know he's in a Williams and he's not yet going to challenge in a Williams but would Lando Norris Not be a much better option for Mercades as a no2 for Lewis and eventually be no1.

Even Hamilton seems to always be praising Lando as a driver and his  achievements, but not so many on here. Or is it the case that Lewis doesn't want to be challenging Lando in the same car next year?

Like I say I'm not a petrol head watching every minute (only just watched the catch up on channel 4) but I always warm to Lando for some reason and personally  feel his is the much better prospect for British racing in the future.

Thanks for your reply, I take it then that Mercades couldn't poach Norris then?

Sorry if that seems ignorant but if I was Toto I would be having a very close look at him.

Yeah there is nothing to stop Mercedes from poaching Norris - I agree he's a very good driver himself

Russell is seen as a bit of a Generational talent on the grid, likes of Alonso have tipped him to win titles

Especially when you consider he's qualified in 2nd / 3rd in recent races despite being in a car that should be qualifying 17th / 18th at best (a lot of people write off Latifi as he'll be compared being in the same car, but I think he's just up against a very good team mate)- He also stepped into the Mercedes @ Sakhir last year that was far too small for him, and battered Bottas and was exceptionally unlucky not to win

As a result of that performance there was talk about Russell replacing Bottas this year, which partly didnt happen because the loan deal with Williams was meant to be for three years, although bet had Mercedes wanted him, they'd have got him.

They've now been put back into a similar situation this season as Russell deserved points long before he achieved them at Hungary, so with Russell | Bottas | Hamilton out of Contract they were left with the choice to promote him, or leave him at Williams for yet another year. Yet they would have ran the risk of losing him to a rival as Red Bull had been sniffing around him, if you believe the rumours.
  • Its also worth noting that Lando signed a new multi-year deal with McLaren earlier in the summer so he'll be expensive to sign for Mercedes at present - I would love to see Russell / Norris as team mates there one day though.

  • Well done Lewis.
  • It is good to see McLaren coming back as a force.
It has been far too long.  Great for F1.
  • Red Bull's livery for this race weekend

It was supposed to be the Japanese Grand Prix (before it got cancelled) so the livery is a thank you to Honda

How I expect every driver reacts to Mazepin’s shitty driving:

  • Mercedes strategy this year has been unbelievably bad.
If Hamilton had stayed out today he would probably have got 3rd, but certainly would’ve got at least 4th.
The fact that they didn’t tell him he’d drop two places is an awful dropped bollock, because if he’d known, he would have refused to come in.
    No wonder he’s so furious.
  • I’ve been to busy to really follow it today but Why did he struggle so much with the new tires?

So was it his fault for not coming in when they told him the first time or just a shit call
  • Yeah maybe. Seemed like a bad choice on the face of it and it didn’t look like he was going to drop enough pace, especially with Perez and LeClerc bickering behind him, but who knows?
Maybe I’m not giving the Merc team enough credit. Possibly because they’ve been so god-awful all year! One of those “we’ll never know” situations I guess.

Could argue either way. I feel like Hamilton was right and the team was wrong, but as @BigRedEvil points out, maybe not… 😳

No chance - Had he stayed out then the best case scenario I reckon he'd have finished behind both Leclerc and Perez - Worst case I reckon even Gasly / Norris would have finished ahead of him too.

Giovinazzi was 6secs behind Ocon on penultimate lap... He almost had him on the final lap.

Leclerc was just 10secs behind Hamilton (with 10-laps left) prior to the latter pitting and gaining by a second a lap - Was a good idea from Mercedes, as had the track dried then everyone would have come in for slicks, but just didnt pay off today.
  • Small margins and all that.
Overall Mercedes get most things right.

    Fair dos.
I switched over to the CAFC Women game straight after, so didn’t catch the analysis, but if that’s what happened to Ocon, then you can see that the move was justified.
I would argue though, that what happened to Ocon wouldn’t necessarily have happened to Hamilton to the same extent.
  • Hamilton has come out after the race and said Mercedes should have pitted him earlier to avoid losing the places.

Umm, they told you to come in earlier and you said no.

He did the same in Sochi, only to relent and listen to them a couple of laps later and it won them the race, this time he didn't listen and kept on, and only listened when it was already too late for him.

A chink in the armour perhaps

So he said earlier or not at all. Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if he hadn't have pitted.

The crews opinion was that it was better to take what was on offer rather than risk all.
Like most of us, I would love to have seen Lewis go for it but on reflection I think they made the correct decision.
I got the impression that Lewis, after the race mode adrenaline had calmed down, accepted the call and didn’t seem too miffed.
    Sa la vie.

  • Agreed.

No way he'd of held off Pere and Leclerc.
  • Horner questioning merc speed gains

I think this is just mind games rather than a genuine accusation (although you cant really tell with Horner)

Also Russell and Norris were head to head in the 2018 F2 championship with Russell finishing 68 points ahead of Norris on 287 points vs 219, Albion and de Vries were not far behind Norris on 212 abs 202 points respectively. Russell seems to be shit loads faster than the next man in a broadly equivalent car:
  • As is often the case Bottas came up with the goods when it mattered.
Great stuff from him to partially rescue the situation for Lewis and Mercedes.
What a superb wing man he has been all these years…..Lewis and Mercedes owe him a huge amount of thanks and respect.
He could have arguably gone on to be a world champion had the mercurial (once in a lifetime), Lewis not been around.
