Why exactly were you getting involved? The ladies had obviously discussed the matter and agreed what they considered an imaginative solution. You then wade in with what you think is the best solution thus upsetting both ladies. You then compound your error by actually delivering the chairs and inadvertently you have insulted both - and your wife is now concerned that the sister in law will think that she also thinks it was a silly idea as well and you have driven a wedge between them.
The best way out of it is to apologise to both. Agree that their idea was imaginative and saved a lot of messing around. That your only concern was their comfort and only what they deserve for all their hard work, not just organising this dinner but throughout the year and the last 20 Christmases.
Making a mistake is understandable, not learning from it - unforgivable.
You must understand your place if you are to stay married.
Women make all the small decisions. Men make all the big decisions.
To put this into perspective for you. Women make small decisions such as where you live, the house you buy, if you have children, what schools they go to, where you go on holiday.
Men make the big decisions such as should we bomb the middle east, if we should remain in the EEC and what the line up should be tonight. Decisions best made in the pub with your mates or in front of the TV with a tinny.

I hope this helps.
