I have a friend who shakes hands in a fairly normal way but with his left hand he grabs my upper right arm firmly to restrict the handshake. Once the handshake is "frozen", he then moves briefly to my right shoulder. I never know how to respond to this.
With strangers, particularly at networking events, I do that that thing where you shake hands, lock thumbs, lock fingers, slide hands, fist bump, but then go for a high five, miss, lean forward, and shake each others ankles.
I once knew a guy who I didn't see often, but when I did, would give the most bone-crushing handshake I've ever encountered. It took me by painful surprised the first couple of times, but the third time I remembered and got in there early with as firm a handshake as I could manage. He looked at me, eyes wide, a sense of mild awe on his face and said "Good shake!"
I don't really have any friends, but some guys I work with go for the sort of genial pat on the arm thing?
depends on the mate. some would want a quick hug. some did hold on for a bit too long though. most of the time it's a simple alright, possibly followed with a handshake.
with my best mate to this day I still do the fresh prince handshake though...

30 seconds of shadow boxing
5 fist bumps ending with a pull-away hand 'explosion' with sound effects
Must be honest, I do struggle to make friends
With mates a personal insult
I do that, handshake and (occasionally) hug.
Under no circumstances whatsoever:
Fist-bumps
That claspy, grip thing that footballers - even refs and linesmen ffs - do before games
High-fives
Second person replies 'alright'
First person then says 'is someone getting the beers in or what?'
And if it's somebody you really bond with add a slight knowing eyebrow raise, of just one eyebrow.

(I have no mates)
It's croydon after all.
