Funny seeing Powell again on the C5 FL show, on a day when Charlton won and Huddersfield lost...
Funny in what way?
Funny as in odd/surprising, seeing how relatively well Huddersfield have been playing and how badly we have been playing. I'm sure he still feels sore about the way Hudders sacked him
Only one win, we mustn't forget. Riga is a proper manager though. We should also remember that we weren't going to get him, Duchatelet had some unknown lined up and he was clearly told at the last minute that he had to bring in somebody we would accept. We had a part in that. We still need a midfielder desperately ( I think we need JJ's influence but from the bench nowadays), but good to see Igor improving in every game. Riga understands balance, Fraeye wouldn't know what I mean when I say that. He was playing in front of defences and getting nowhere and then doing the same the next game. No football nous whatsoever, and it would have been clear to anybody who knows anything about the game, and the damage his time has done could still see us relegated.
We support the team but not the regime, if Riga saves us, we will only keep getting into this position again and again until the fundamental issues with teh owner and his network are addressed. If Riga kept us up, it wouldn't be a surprise if he was let go again. That is what we have to fight against. Whatever you think of Powell, what he has revealed, Riga not being kept on originally, the lunacy that is this owner has to be challenged. But that we have managed to influence one sane decision has given us some hope. We need to try to influence many more!
Two great highlights in the slow mo stream which is still running,. 1. JJ was an amazing influence on the park today. Long chat to Teixeira after the penalty 2. Long chat with Big Mac on way back to half way after his 2nd. 3. Loved Solly getting in their penalty takers face as he missed, with some choice words seen in slo mo! 4. I cant count, but wanted the number 4 in my post, cos we dont see it very often.
I also saw that on the replay.
About 2. - long chat with Mak
JJ was in his ear for a long time after all the others had gone and congratulated him. I assumed he was calming him down after getting all hyped up and telling him to focus and not get sent off as he was on a yellow and they were trying to wind him up.
Thought it was great captaining from Jacko
Then Mak immediately runs into a dodgy challenge and yellow from the kick off.
Watching via the stream I give huge credit to Riga. He set the team up to win.
It was a risk and I thought as a consequence at times we struggled defensively yet for me he clearly wanted the midfield to focus on playing forward. For much of the first half Cousins apart we could not get it right, JBG was largely ineffective for 40 minutes, Bergdich was very solid (just where in hell has he been before now) but more than once gave the ball away in dangerous areas yet they were all looking to create a threat and while a lot of passing left much to be desired you do not get to successfully change the focus of the side overnight.
Eventually the approach paid off and JBG showed why he his worth his place in the side. Cousins was twice the player we have seen in recent times with several probing passes and a decent run or two. Jackson did his job and showed what a difference a mature leader can make even if at times he struggled to influence the game as a player.
Defensively it did expose the two central defenders with nobody specifically mopping up in front of them most particularly when the Rotherham forwards dropped deep. Texiera and Lennon seemed to be unsure as to whether they to stay tight or drop off which created the indecision for the goal.
Henderson with two excellent saves, Solly with one great tackle and Fox were for the most part pretty solid.
Makienok simply showed how he can contribute if you bother to play him in the right system. With Gudmundsson and Bergdich offering consistent width and actually trying to turn defenders. It allows the guy the space to attack the ball. He simply does not the have the "instant" mobility to create space for himself. Few people of his stature ever do. He is not the finished article by any means but he showed no little ability and immense character to bounce back today and I am delighted he was rewarded for his efforts.
Vetokele is still off the pace but certainly put in a great shift and if he can keep that going it will be a huge boost to the squad. His appearances will need to be managed as we need to make sure we do not overload him.
What a lovely little cameo from the natural talent that is Lookman. Please handle him with care!
In truth there were times the game could have turned against us and we certainly had our nervy spells but fortune favours the brave and they got precisely what their commitment to the cause deserved.

What was said? I'd like to know how chris solly intimidates people? Haha great result and looking forward to actually being able to watch the highlights! COYR!
Nothing to add about the team on the pitch but the 739 in the away end were as good as an extra man, I thought that there were a couple of thousand of us with the chanting and singing which was noisy and humorous in the most part. I couldn't see the banners until this evening on the TV - money well spent.
This afternoon was an excellent example of "Support the team not the regime"
well done to the whole Charlton team on and off the pitch.
the were well taken but some of the passes leading up to them were top class.
Igor the key here. Everytime we won the ball in midfield his first thought was to run in behind. Must make such a difference for the likes of JC and JBG to have that option. 3-4 times he came so close to being clean through on goal. Hopefully he can build up to full match fitness without a setback as I reckon he will have a huge impact on where we finish this year.
Not been home long, but what a great day that was, I've barely got a voice left.
Every player had a good game.
Henderson was solid as usual and produced two good saves in the second half. He showed off some nice time-wasting skills.
Solly was excellent, defensively, and got forward when the time was right. He ran pretty much the length of the pitch, skinned 2-3 players a couple of times each, and won us a corner in the second half.
Lennon and Tex were good, but were troubled a lot more with Becchio and Clarke-Harris on the pitch.
Fox had his best game that I've seen of him. Non fussy and strong.
JBG was slick on the ball and showed quality throughout. Thought he was very unselfish to square the ball to Igor, when he easily could have had another touch onto his left and shot himself.
Cousins was superb in the middle of the park, he was everywhere.
Jackson was equally good, breaking up play, working hard and keeping it simple. Led the team brilliantly and didn't waste a ball.
Bergdich was surprisingly good. Did well to get an assist, and worked hard all game, supporting Fox well.
Igor was busy and won a lot of balls that he had no right to win, giving their centre halves a torrid time.
Makienok was terrific. That is what you want from a big target man, a complete nuisance to the opposition's defense, winning loads in the air and winding up their fans. Chuffed for him to get two well taken goals.
Riga didn't have to make early changes, because no-one was having a bad game. He got it spot on today, whereas Rotherham probably should have started with one of their 2 strikers, rather than relying on a converted winger to lead the line.
Great performance from the team, and the customers in the stand!
Nice to spend a Saturday evening feeling like this!
Shame if people are indifferent. Today was brilliant. Support the team not the regime.
Unfortunately the success of the team will justify the regime.
Was talking about this with the old man in the car home. It's a tragic paradox. However tonight is all about basking in the long overdue brilliance of the performance and the buzz of a (rare of late) great Charlton day. They'll never understand what it means to stand there in the freezing stands knowing what happens over those 90 minutes makes or breaks your week and they'll be a long distance memory before they ever get near to knowing and even they can't piss on today.
Awesome day out with my oldest daughter, the winning feeling is amazing and we have just watched the sky sports replays ten times, at least. Jose Riga clearly has the respect of the team, a first since he was our manager last time round, and he clearly knows what he's doing. A wonderfully calm, unassuming and understated man. I love Charlton, especially on days like today.

Agree with your views in pushing forward and being positive.

Was the same last week with Igor - always looking to make the run into the channels or make the dummy diagonal run off the ball to create space and draw defenders plus making the opposition defence sit just that little bit deeper.
The players who have the ability to change games were fully aware of their need to step up and put it in and Jose Riga appears to know what needs to be said to fire the team up.
The biggest tests are yet to come against the better opposition but this improvement can only bolster confidence and reduce fear of playing the better sides.
Jose is easing us in the rght direction and there will be hiccups but things are getting better.
The current squad may just be good enough to stay up but we need a bit of luck in avoiding injuries.

Avoided sports coverage today. Very unusual for me so I had to read the score three or four times to ensure I hadn't got it wrong.
A mountain to climb still but at least we didn't fall off the first foothill.
the were well taken but some of the passes leading up to them were top class.
Performance showed passion and good bits of build up play. Defence still shaky but great to see Igor, JGB and Mak play well.
Support was excellent, didn't shut up for 90mins and on the coach the whole way home...

Just seen Solly giving it to Clarke-Harris after the penalty, love it haha!
Would be so grateful
