  • Why all this interest in Lookman.....just another explayer as far as I’m concerned?
Once they’ve gone, they’ve gone and I personally have no more interest in them than I would any player at another club.....never understood folks interest in what ex players do after they leave us.
I suppose it’s something I learned to do as a kid many many years ago after Stuart Leary left us and countless others who’ve followed suit.....it’s the way I deal with the disappointment........I try to ignore them.
Not criticising others here but I do find the adoration/OTT interest in explayers careers a little strange.
Appreciate this is a football orientated site of course but over 600 posts about an explayer who likely doesn’t give a shyte about us does seem rather extraordinary to me.....how many more months/years will this go on for I wonder?
Ah well......we’re all different I guess.

You have a habit of coming on this thread and asking why all the interest in Lookman

Bet your a big softy who loves watching his career really... ;)
He might be a big softie now but not back in the day.
  • Don't really need to justify why I'm interested in the progression of his career but I'm going to give it a go anyway.

I think you do Lookman a serious disservice. Perhaps that's because you felt more of a connection to those players you mentioned and less so in the case of Lookman.

If he gets his move, he will most likely feature heavily for one of the top teams in Germany including in European competition. All at 20 years old.

How many ex-academy players have gone on to play in a top European competition? In recent times I can think only of Lee Bowyer, Scott Parker and then Nick Pope a few days ago.

If he continues his impressive rise, he could be one of our country's best players by the time he's 28 and the 2026 World Cup comes around.

You’re forgetting the best player to come out of our academy in about the last 20 years.

I agree with you that Stuart Leary was the best player I have seen play for Charlton, but we had quite a few years watching him play, I was more upset when Eddie Firmani left as they could have been great playing together for years.
As for Lookman, I wish all the young players who have started there league career with us, the very best and hope they go on to have a great playing career

    Maybe don't open the thread?
If one followed that train of thought about everything you aren’t interested in then life would be very boring.....and don’t tell me you never open threads or read anything or watch anything that you aren’t particularly interested in and then have a view on it.......cos I simply wouldn’t believe you.
I do - then I realise maybe it's not for me instead of slagging it off with multiple comments.
  • A super young player. I hope and expect him to do very well.

The only thing that pisses me off is that any sell on fee will be trousered by Duchatelet if the deal goes through before 9 August.
  • Ridiculous that Lookman should have to go abroad to get top flight football.Every day you look at transfers and potential targets for premier clubs and see a bunch of overpriced foreigners we have never heard of.How many Harry Maguires are there playing in the championship who no one bothers to look for.I am sure there are loads of players in the Championship(or even lower,Gomez,Konsa eetc)who are better than the no marks who will be on our screens next year. When will we get managers who will do the job properly and back our players.I guarantee there are just as many Rooneys,Beckhams,Nevilles out there who just wont get a chance.
  • Kind of impressed that a lot of the younger English lads are more willing to spread their wings and try something different in Germany, Portugal, Holland and the like. Before English players never really went abroad, remember the excitement when we had three players playing out in Italy? Or the occasional Brit ended up at Madrid or at Marseilles?

There must be 10+ young English players this coming season who have made the move overseas to get more experience. I guess the more homogenised approach of global top flight football, the English speaking nature of the globalised game and the fact that there is way more knowledge about many of the other leagues across Europe makes things easier. The national side will be the ones benefiting in the long run.

If including the Europa League for Pope, then Shelvey has played 15+ games in the Europa League
Also Gomez played 4/5 games for Liverpool in the Champions League last year.

Interesting that DM's 2 weeks coincided with end of the transfer window and now Lookman's deal is all but done, it's now 'a crucial few days'. Perhaps the delay has been RD waiting to trouser £3m.

Oh come off it mate.....who’s slagging it off, I just find it strange that other posters are seemingly very interested in his career whereas I don’t......which you and others most likely find strange.
There’s certainly no slagging off going on....not by any means.

Always makes me think of the Ricky Gervais stand-up where he's talking about people taking offense on Twitter... where he makes the same comparison that it's like seeing an ad for guitar lessons, tearing off the number, ringing it up and shouting "but I don't want guitar lessons!!" down the phone and hanging up.
I think the correct term is 'attention seeking'

Oh what utter utter crap......I assume your comment is directed at me. I don’t need to seek attention pal, that’s pretty insulting wouldn’t you say.
I don’t know why you so often want to have sly digs at me......I wish you’d find better things to do with your time.
Have another glasss of beer and a joint and chill out for fucks sake!

Its not sly digs just at you, I would have posted The same about anyone posting the same thing.

As much as I'd imagine a nice cold beer and a joint would go down a treat, I gave it all up when I started trying for a baby...... Might explain the crankiness

  • fwiw......

I thought Lookman is decent but & more in the Konsa/Poyet bracket than the Gomez/Shelvey/Parker one.
  • I disagree with that Golf, I think Lookman would be somewhere in-between the two groups.

I'd have him a lot closer to the "successful" lot.

    Definitely.

Am i right in thinking that he'll only be behind Parker and Defoe in terms of total transfer fees of our exports?

Lookman will have a much better career than both Shelvey and Parker.

We didn't get a fee for Defoe. Not directly - W Ham may have been ordered to pay us something in the end but nowhere near the £3m odd we gor for Gomez & certainly no sell-ons.

True but I think Chris was asking about total transfer fees, including all future sales etc

Defoe sold for a total of £44 million (roughly) throughout his career
  • Marco Silva has apparently said that Lookman is going no where this season

Can see a loan deal happening somewhere in January then!!
