The players have their livelihoods and careers to think of, now tarnished by relegation and all the ensuing consequences for every single person with a Charlton connection. However, they know the reality of the whole situation and they do not try and hide - they know very well the part they played in this whole sorry affair.
That's why the way it went at the Kit Sponsors' dinner was so important, as will be PoTY. It gives the players a precious opportunity to apologise and, within obvious limits, to explain. They are professional athletes, and losing is not in their DNA - believe me, from what transpired at the KS they appreciate and need such occasions as much as we do.
In the modern age of social media it might be thought that everything is open for public scrutiny. That is only the case up to a point - there is nothing better than setting aside the keyboard and getting together round the table for a respectful and sincere conversation.
It takes three things to make a football club - fans, playing and coaching staff, and ownership/administration. Doesn't it make sense for at least two out of three to be like-minded and mutually sympathetic, especially when the third is so far out of step?6 -
I would love to see some genuine player protest, perhaps all walk out for the Burnley match wearing black and white scarves. Sadly, I don't think it will ever happen. If KM doesn't turn up, could get a bit interesting as the players may reveal more about her interesting choices than they would be prepared to do otherwise.
A mutinous ship can only really be solved by removing (and court martialling) the captain and probably the first mate.
In this context, thats Katrien and Tony.
Given our close naval heritage we could perhaps consider keelhauling as an appropriate punishment.1 -
