First Charlton pub I ever drank in, and the only one I would visit now. Real shame.

Looks like they want to continue as a pub with more than a restaurant feel about it.

I think Mendoza have realised they are getting the blame for this and want to be seen as the good guys.

The museum could take it over and move all our exhibits there.

Just need someone to put a few £million into the idea.

I'll give Matt Southall a call and see if he's interested.

my first pint was in there 60 years ago with my dad and uncles(no I was not 18) very sad to see it go,but with cheap supermarket beer people wont leave their homes for a drink now.Not many locals left now,Antigallican gone, both clubs in Church Lane gone.

So sad. Geoff had turned a sad old pub into a thriving one with great beer and a solid CAFC presence. Best pub for miles. Well, this side of the Pelton anyway.

I'm fairy sure that this pub will reopen at sometime.

Not many pubs left in SE7 now.  The Bugle, Rose of Denmark,  Royal Oak, Anchor and Hope?

    Can't think of any more.

Nothing left with decent beer. Is the Rose of Denmark still ran by a heathen woman?

I see Geoff in my local in Bromley from time to time. I’ll reiterate the collective gratitude to him.....for those that may not visit the Pelton.

No. By a Palace fan for the last three years.

Matchday drinking in Charlton is all but finished.
    It is mate.

So sad about this and will always remember the brilliant days in our pubs at Charlton!

I hope the last few remain so sad.

He's a good bloke, but it's probably on it's last legs. Could do with the White Swan/Pelton treatment, would be rammed down there.

Mendoza the developer got its way finally and Greenwich council voted through their plan to build a house in the back garden. Absolute shit.

And the Chair who took the deciding vote is apparently one that complained about the Vanbrugh beer garden development.

Er, not really - it was refused three times before.

Having just watched the meeting back, and also having followed this saga for a few years, I don't think they had many grounds to turn it down as past refusals (including from a planning inspector) weren't on the grounds that it would damage the pub's viability.

The main problem, as came out in the meeting, was Mendoza's rent demands.

I suspect the pub can survive with a smaller garden - whether it can survive the likes of Mendoza is a different matter.

It wont survive either way, with their rent demands.  If Geoff couldnt make it a viable option then I don't know who can and now when residents move in to the back garden and start kicking up a fuss over noise it has no chance.

Not that I guess anyone would take it on now.

The landlord of the Lord Herbert retired during lockdown.  A long time Charlton fan who has had the pub 30 years or something like that... so it has been closed since.

But a regular has come along and decided to take it on.  I like stories like that.  He didnt like his local being shut so is opening it up himself.

Absolutely effing furious about this. Greedy owners, idiotic planning officers, supine council. And it's Charlton that suffers.

How long before the new residents complain about the pub behind them?

Well done @InspectorSands at Charlton Champion for his continued local reporting. No one else is going to shine a light on how local people get shafted.
