  • Friendlies mean nothing.

England have beaten France, Germany and Portugal within the last 9 months.

    Every single year people panic.

Some people do tend to overreact to friendly results.
However, I think any concern and " panic" is more to do with the worry that the brave new world of " learning from our mistakes" extends only to appointing Russell Slade and bringing in 3 forwards.
What' s the saying, " Is that all you've got?"
Wait and see is probably the sensible advice, but given the regimes track record and yes the unreliable evidence of friendlies I am not surprised that people are quick to sense more impending failure.

I don't think we'll have the record breaking champs of our last stay in league one. But I do reckon we'll have a battle hardened play off side. Which for a club our size is less than should be expected. Without Slade though, I reckon it would be worse.

What are you basing that on?

Currently we don't look like having a squad anywhere else close to being able to compete in the top 6. Might not a have a senior keeper, could be starting with Roger Johnson at the back, we have an ageing, slow midfield with no creativity, and only 2 decent strikers (i'm assuming Watt will still leave). Nowhere close to being good enough for a 46 game season.
I hate to say it though... What are you basing your facts on that we won't be a strong Play-Off side?

At the moment our pre-season is proving typical of many years gone by, nothing has changed in that respect... Plus I still feel we're in a much weaker League One to the one we were last in
Not only does the league look weaker than last time, you have to remember that though our midfield looks devoid of creativity and out backline is ageing and slow, so will many of the teams in League 1. I think with the right signings (debatable if we'll make them but there's still 6 weeks) then we have a good shot. Relegation talk is mind blowing
Re relegation - i wouldn't say mind blowing, but you're right - we shouldn't be thinking that way. But were not a normal club. Anything is possible with the current owners. I don't think we will go down, but I'm going to have a small wager on it. Nothing that happens at this club comes as a surprise anymore.

Until the creativity / playmaker role in central midfield is addressed we are going to find it hard to beat a drum never mind the likes of Millwall.

I'm not worried about pre-season results but RD and KM not learning from their mistakes. Any new signings will have missed the Austria trip and potentially could be behind in terms of fitness. If we don't make enough signings we know what will happen as its we've seen it in the last two seasons.

Friendlies do not mean nothing. The results aren't that important but it gives a look at the depth of the squad. Granted, they don't mean a great deal either, but the only thing worse than people predicting doom and gloom off a friendly result are the people calling those reporting back from matches as 'bed wetters' because they can see possible gaps in the squad.

Well compared to the Powell championship winning team the difference is he was backed with a coherent squad strategy in the close season so most of the new signings were available for most of the pre-season. And the previous relegated team retained good players both young and old. We were able to start the season with Burton, Shelvey, Sam and Bailey. We know what went wrong with that team but it won its first 6 games.

By contrast we are conducting a fire sale of goalkeepers simply because they can be "monetised"

Does anyone know how Slade set up his teams in the lower divisions? Everyone keeps mentioning a lack of creativity in the midfield, perhaps he doesn't set his team up that way. - I have no idea hence the question, were his teams hard to beat but also lacking style?

And to be fair they want to leave. That's a big consideration.

He used to have Dean Cox though @ Leyton Orient and he was a very good playmaker at this level.

In terms of the table from that season only Wolves and Rotherham scored more goals than Orient whilst only Brentford and Wolves conceded less

Yet there's also a difference in knowing the squad needs strengthening and complaining about the way we play 2 weeks into pre-season.

It's 3 Saturdays till the first game. Sincerely hope we're not scrabbling around for players 3 weeks into the season.

As things stand we will have a young inexperienced keeper, fox and Johnson in defence ,2 old men in central mid and a very weak bench.
The season is almost upon us so let's hope we bring a couple in ASAP

We crashed forward in one particular game last season, got a ricochet for a corner, and the opposing defender swivelled, glaring at his keeper: "How DARE you mess it up." We lost 3-0, home at The Valley.

There was another telling vignette in front 15,000 fans when relegation was only a possibility. Ball thrown from Pope to set our man free, rushing forward on the right wing, oceans of space, opponents struggling to get back. He received - awkwardly - passed to his runner behind rather than in front, so he had to back-track to collect. We lost possession yet again.

And lost 3-0. That is a simple lack of basic ability. We all know Carol Fraeye was an eighteen-year-old student in a nylon shirt wetting his knickers about actually managing a professional team, but don't you think our captain, Jonny Jackson, should have said something to the players themselves: "Fuck him. We'll do it this way..."

That was another hapless 3-0 defeat.

The look of hate from the Huddersfield defender to another - "How DARE you leave me exposed like that!" - is electric between players with skill and talent, and the toughness to play and win. Meanwhile, at Charlton...

Isn't it about bloody time we stamped our authority on this game?

Lol, love the way the keeper gives daggers to the defender, she needs to work on her own ball control before throwing out looks like that.

Thank you! Bothered me beyond belief.

Also, poor ball out from the keeper in the first place.
