@Lincsaddick usually i find us agreeing but that was an absolute shambles the weekend, i know your a bit up north compared to us but 4 hours in each direction to watch that, im not saying i expect us to win every game but at least fucking try, and the way i see it you pays your money you can moan about whatever you want without being offensive, as lots have said roger wasnt singled out they were shit and the performance was shit, what does he expect us all to be happy with being outplayed by 2nd favourites for the drop, its a shame the team couldnt perform and he had to stoop to abusing the good fans that travelled as i dont think we will get that attendance in a further afield away game this season, cheers roland and team for ruining what could of been a very enjoyable day out.
Thing is I disagree with your fundamental opinion that the team didn't try but agree that the set up and selection was a bit shambolic .. so we 1/2 agree .. in my opinion, the team did try hard enough .. the facts (as I see tem) are: that the team was inferior on the day to the Bury team, I think that the team was badly selected and we were overpowered by a more prepared and settled outfit .. I just do not agree that the CAFC players who turned out last Saturday didn't try, care or give a toss .. they did have a go and they lost .. and as has been said on here by a few, including me, if fans can give dogs abuse to the players, then they should be able to take a bit back .. f f s I can understand a few children possibly being upset by bad language, but grown men and women at a football match ?? .. do me a favour ..
The fundamental difference between the give it/take it argument is that Roger Johnson is being paid to wear the shirt that all 1100 Charlton fans, there to support the team, love and adore.
Perhaps 'RoJo' should learn to simply like the fans and club he's meant to be representing, and he'll be liked in return.
Not only that but Johnson didn't get any stick to begin with, he only heard the groans and frustration of the away following, at another shite collective performance.
The give it/take it argument should only really apply to players of opposing teams. Players we aren't meant to have an affiliation with.
very relevant and accurate comments .. as I typed above, I think Johnson was out of order .. BUT .. he did it in the heat of the moment and in frustration .. the reactions on here are misplaced, OTT and YES, I know we are all entitled to an opinion .. @ValleyGary I believe that you've played the game at a decent level, if you tell me that you have never ever said or done untoward things during or after a game I will write to the Pope and recommend you be renamed St Gary of the Divine Valley
Of course, got a mouth like a sewer, but i was never an experienced professional, that was under contract and receiving thousands of pounds per week. Id be willing to forgive most but RJ has got plenty of previous. He's just an arsehole.
And there lies the issue.
This is a player despised at every club he's been too. A man who can't even go through a fans dinner without doing a bit of Charlie. Someone whose performances have been pretty poor typically, but still managed to come back and get a decent contract because we were shit out of luck.
He's not just another journeyman, he's a universally disliked journeyman with a reputation for being a complete asshole.
I thought JBG got stick last season on a number of occasions for simply looking at the Covered End and rolling his eyes and so on. But Johann didn't have the reputation of a universal tosser and could bring some actual quality in to the team.
So maybe it's not the fact that Roger mouthed off, it's the fact he mouthed off when he's given the fans less than anyone else has, and the fans simply don't want him anyway. I think a player can earn a little leeway, but RoJo has done far from earn any slack.
AND incidentally, Johnson's performance was not too bad ..
This is astonishing. You're calling his performance "not too bad"? Do you mind if I examine that a bit closer?
Johnson is a professional footballer. Both of those adjectives are important. As far as "footballer" is concerned, his job was to marshal the defensive troops to ensure Charlton kept a clean sheet. He can't be blamed for the lack of goals scored by his team. But he's totally culpable for the ineffective defensive performance. We lost. Had his footballing performance been "not too bad", we would have secured a clean sheet and, at least, a point. As it is, the defence - his sole reason for being there - was compromised to the tune of two goals. So, even had we scored once, we would still have lost. If this can be regarded as "not too bad", then we might as well accept relegation immediately and start to work towards recruiting a team that can hold its own in League 2 next season. You might think that's appropriate; I don't. So, with regards to your comment "not too bad" in terms of his footballing performance, you're wrong. Very, very wrong.
But, as well as being a footballer, he's a "professional". He owes a duty to his employers for his levels of skill, fitness and commitment; for his ethos, attitude and countenance; and for his ability to understand his roles and for displaying that understanding. In other words, as a professional employee of a business in the entertainment industry which owes its income (albeit apparently only one-third) to fee-paying spectators, he needs to show he can empathise with fans who pay (at least in part) his wages. And he needs to ensure his execution of duties leads to likely more, not fewer, supporters in future. He was woefully short of demonstrating anything like the levels of professionalism that would be appropriate. So, with regards to your comment "not too bad" in terms of his professionalism, you are off your fucking head, mate.
Hopefully you saw what I did there? I swore appropriately - you are, after all, off your fucking head - and without compromising my professionalism on CL, as I am not paid for my views here. Johnson is a professional footballer, so he needs to act accordingly. His performance can't be regarded as "not too bad", unless you append more words to it, such as "his performance was not too bad, it was fucking awful".
The point is a professional footballer AT ANY LEVEL OF THE GAME is required to be just that A PROFESSIONAL.
Good grief I have stood in clubhouses where I have been given any amount of abuse, some good natured, some unreasonable and on occasion some down right nasty.
Whilst I might personally wish to respond to such insults I was a representative of the club and therefore all the people involved with that club. No matter the provocation you have a broader responsibility than just yourself. If a player does not get that after over decade in the game then clearly he could not give a s**t about the people he represents.
In which case as a senior player you need him nowhere near your squad.
It was unprofessional act at every level and poorly reflects on the manager, coaches, the other players and the club at a time Slade is trying to build a "charm offensive" in building a relationship with supporters.
Has Roger Johnson the CEO or the club made a statement yet about a club professional directly abusing the supporters fan base? (Just trying to get the thread back in track)
Wherever you sit on the what is and isn't acceptable debate, his actions were not and silence from the club is condoning what occurred

Johnsons' response simply unacceptable.
Rufus told some of the away fans at Stockport to go fuck themselves after we had our arses handed to us (3-1 i think, @Jack Charlton was mascot so blame him).
actually, we better do something about johnson now to stop him scamming good honest church going folk in years to come!

would love to see the reaction on here if Jolly Rog did the can can on the head of a poor and undeserving fan á la Cantona .. he'd never get out of the Valley alive

Remember it well Dave, It took about 10 blokes to hold my old man back from going on the pitch and decking him, funnily we went unbeaten after that game and won promotion at Wembley with Rufus scoring his first goal.

let's hope that history sort of repeats itself .. not your old man being restrained from committing GBH, just a 40 odd game unbeaten run.

That's a great comparison. Because Cantona and Johnson are such similar players.

I agree that the team didn't mean to be useless by intent.
However what has struck a chord with me isn't the generalisation of 'dogs abuse' going one way and t'other, it is what was actually said. The words and sentiment behind them.
'If you don't ******* like it, don't come'.
Pretty specific. Not part of a tit for tat exchange 'you're a dick', 'you're a bigger dick', which might be interpreted as the rough and tumble exchange of pugnacious banter, not that at all.
Have you considered what this means, and do you think in any context that is the right sentiment a player should express to fans?
tossers, tits, tats, dicks - this a thread that Rog would be truly proud of.
Gravy.
I was referred to as a cock sucker by some little boy/lad .. fuck him and fuck you

it was the highlight of the day mate!
talking of jack Charlton .. I'd'a been about thirteen the year the Leeds Revie team beat us to promotion from Division 2 (old money) .. towards the end one of the last games of the season, a tight game that Leeds narrowly won .. Gary Sprake watched a long range shot whistle just over the bar without moving at all to cover it, though he must have seen it from a long way out .. I was behind that goal at the uncovered end .. Jack C grabbed Sprake by the scruff and gave him the biggest volley of abuse I had ever heard one teammate, indeed one person in any circumstance, give another .. 13/14 years of age and my first real lesson in how to REALLY efff at, blind, curse and insult someone .. I bet Sprake never made the same mistake again .. Jack Charlton the perfect yin to Bobby Moore's yang or Vicky verky ((:>)
