Prompted by the very helpful New York tips thread, any suggestions please? My son and I have thee nights in a fortnight a time. Got an afternoon trip to the Hoover Dam booked. Staying in the New York New York hotel. Cheers
Never been and don't plan to. However someone told me that if you play pontoon, and never twist on a twelve or above, you probably break even or come out slightly ahead, and if there are free refreshments while you're doing so you end up ahead overall. A gambler might know better.

I had no intention of going to Vegas either Seth but it's my boys 21st present and he was bang up for it. I've decided just to go and embrace it and have a laugh. I don't play cards so my gambling will be restricted to the slot machines.
For blackjack all the shops in the casino sell basic strategy cheat cards. This tells you the best play to make depending on your cards and dealers face card. Played out over thousands or games you should get 98% of your stake back.
Don't play/gamble on craps unless you have had a lesson.
Blackjack and roulette tables are great for chatting to other people and having some banter. Slots are soul destroying money eaters with no interaction with other people.
Always split aces and eights.
Tip the waitress well the first drink then a dollar each subsequent drink.
Pick one roulette number you include in your bet on each spin.

We didn't gamble, so not my type of place so I thought. We loved it. Bonkers place.
Go on the roller coaster at New York, white knuckle stuff. The old strip at Fremont street has awesome light show and for a truly brown and retro feel you should play some hands at the golden nugget. Cash point withdrawals at 'gentlemen's clubs ' on Fremont street charge you $30!
Try a shooting range, plenty in and around the strip.
Agree and would definitely recommend this place

For a steak I would recommend Brand Steakhouse in the Monte Carlo - they use the same steak (fact) as the Michelin starred steakhouse in The Aria but charge about a quarter of the price!
Hotel wise I could not recommend The Aria highly enough and it also has the best poker room in Vegas.
We finished our 2,000 mile road trip in Vegas in May. Amazing place for all different reasons.
If you want to play roulette, be aware of the minimum bet on each table. In the plusher hotels, like Wynn Encore where we stayed, its like $20 a spin where as in hotels further down the strip its $10 during the daytime.
We done a sunset helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon which was amazing but seeing you're going there first, no need for you to do that.
Freemont Street is an absolute must and so is the zipwire. When you get there and see it, you'll so want to do it!
Two restaurant recommendations: Rose Rabbit Lie (which was recommended to us by our friends in LA) in the Cosmopolitan and there's a lovely Italian Steakhouse called Andiano over at Freemont which will blow you socks off. The Rib Eye steak I had in there is the biggest I have ever seen by miles.
If you go down to Harrah's, just outside is Carnival Court where you can have a drink and listen to a live band who are usually bloody good.
The fountain show at Bellagio starts every hour from 3pm.
Try and take the time to walk in the foyets of the different hotels, the money the owners have spent on each hotel is mindblowing.
The Penn & Teller show was really good as was O by Cirque Du Soleil
The North outlet is miles better than the South.
Oh and the pool parties at Wynn, holy sh*t I ended up with a bruised arm where the wife kept punching me the gawping at the stunners in the skimpiest bikinis you will ever see.
been twice, excellent tips by @JohnBoyUK stayed in wynn the 1st time and mgm grand the 2nd time, booked to go back next september already trying out the belaggio.
Personally I preferred the Hoover Damn to the Gran Canyon.
That's interesting but obviously subjective. I was out there in 2008 and did Vegas, Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. Hoover just didn't do it for me at all. Okay, it's enormous, but just didn't float my boat but can understand why people like it. As for the Grand Canyon. Did a 2 day hike through Rider Canyon down to the banks of the Colorado and camped out overnight on a natural beach on the river's edge. Hiked back the next day. It was an incredible experience but obviously we had the time (and energy) to do it as a small military group. Top of my list is to do a two week rafting holiday along the Colorado.
As for Vegas, loved it! Completely surpassed all expectations by virtue of being so surreal. Loved New York New York hotel (and it's Rollercoaster) and got to see a pre-season NHL game at the MGN Grand. Went into Planet Hollywood hotel/casino one evening at 10 and we 'rolled out' the next morning at 8.30! Ended up breaking even on the roulette table as well.
For the amount of time that you go for just be prepared to burn the candle at both ends to cram it all in (or as much as possible!).
My boy is 21 next year and I hit 50 so we are going in October. That will also coincide with the start of the Vegas NHL franchise that they secured recently.
Perfect. Especially if the Canucks come to town whilst we're there!!
