The answer is 5. There are 3 on the highest level, plus another 1 when you combine those three, and the entire structure is a triangle, so that makes 5. All the shapes on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th tiers have 4 sides.
So either I've been whooshed, or I'm in the clever 10%.

I make it 24 unless there're any in more dimensions that can't be represented in a 2D image.
I'm not even going to start trying to work that one out. Not only are there a shit load more individual triangles, there are also inverted ones to consider along with any additional by rotating it.

This was just my way of saying I have no clue on the triangles thing.
1 + 2^2 + 2^3 + 2^4 + ... + 2^n where n is the number of rows
If four rows has 29, the formula could be correct. I count 26 which is a bit of a shame.
Having done a bit of searching, someone's already worked out the formula for this:
