Sad to lose another rock star in 2016. One of those bands I never quite got to see live (nearly went to see them at The Marquee pre-Piledriver once but had a better offer that night. Should have gone as the "better offer" wasn't!)
Greenies got it spot on Rick was a fantastic guitarist. Anyone doubts it look on Utube where he talks about his playing and demonstrates how he composed some of the songs. Mystery Song is astonishing. RIP Rick always be a hero.
I was not ready for this. Rick Parfitt had been a part of my story for fifty years. Without doubt the longest relationship of my life: this was also the most satisfying, frustrating, creative and fluid. From those early days, we worked together to create the Quo sound, look and hits. We spent years on the road, on the stage and in the studio, rarely far from each other, honing what we did.
We were a team, a double act, a partnership and yet also two very different people, handling the pressures of growing older, constant touring, dealing with success and keeping the creative flame burning in different ways. He developed his own sound, his own style, casually inspiring a generation of players.
Rick was the archetypal rock star, one of the originals, he never lost his joy, his mischievous edge and his penchant for living life at high speed, high volume, high risk. His life was never boring, he was louder and faster and more carefree than the rest of us. There were any number of incidents along the way, times when he strayed into areas of true danger and yet still losing him now is still a shock. Even in a year that has claimed so many of our best, including now George Michael, Rick Parfitt stands out. I was not ready for this.
As a mid 30s guy I always think of Quo (in an affectionate) way as the archetypal Dad Rock band. Rocking all over the world, Old Rag Blues, Whatever you want etc.

When I saw them a couple of years ago, I was surprised (and pleased) at how heavy they were at times. OK, they weren't Twisted Sister but certainly weren't poppy at all.

Got to be my favorite band, Quo, and i was there on that first ever gig at The Welcome Inn supporting Episode Six, who had Ian Gillan and Roger Glover pre Deep Purple. Rick was the driving force of Quo, RIP
We went to their Christmas show at the O2, probably 2015. Blown away by the musicianship and talent, so much better that the 12 bar they were famous for. RIP Rick.

I was there - seen them many many times over the years. A great live show always. CAFC and Quo - seen me through some good and bad times lol. Cardiff Castle 1976 was my first gig, under scorching sun brilliant. Missed the last train back to SE London so slept in the Street!! Hammersmith with the F4 in the 70s - wonderful. Met Francis recently and I was like a love struck teen lol.
