We leave out our main spinners, so who takes the first wicket...Joe Denly
Indeed - difficult to see why we took both Quyyum and Tredwell with us when, presumably, the thinking was that the pitch might spin only to then leave them both out.
Can't seem to do a thing right, no consistency in our batting, Denly perhaps being the exception and Stevens started like a man on fire, have the fire brigade been round and put him out?
Turning out, after a great start, into a poor season?

I like Matt Walker and would like to think that the drop in form and Gillespie's departure is just that. However, it is clear that the team did not perform in either of the one day comps and we seem to have carried that into the end of season Championship matches.
Donald is meant to be coming next season as assistant coach and we have to hope that this new voice in the dressing room will work. Don't think shaking up a few of the players will do any harm and having released a couple of the squad we do need to bring in additions that will put pressure on those perceived to be fixtures in the side.
69 overs bowled by 5 seamers and 17 bowled by Denly. So, instead of the 5 seamers bowling an average of 14 overs each, why could 4 not have shared that load instead and bowled an average of 17 overs?
Equally, had we had Tredwell or Quyyum playing, we might have got 25 overs by now out of the spinners. I suspect that we did make the right call taking two spinners but made the wrong decision in omitting both.

When your (very) part time spinner bowls 17 overs on the first day, there's something seriously wrong with the team selection.
Good for Denly though, a few more wickets and he can go to Australia as our second spinner!
As you say Ball has been released and to be fair to him he did have his chances but never quite convinced. Equally, there doesn't appear to be any all rounders of that ilk knocking on the door i.e. who have contributed consistently with the bat and ball in the 2nd team.
Good news - Kent have offered Stevens a one year contract. Let's hope that he accepts.
Good news as he is in form.
However, what's next after him? Is he stopping the likes of the departed Bally coming into the team?
If Ball (or indeed Gidman) were good enough, they'd be playing
Gidman really is a strange one. Like many I welcomed his addition - he averages 36.46 with the bat and 23.83 with the ball which is better on both counts than Stevens - but he was reluctant to move south because of his family ties and possibly that has affected his form. The fact that the only match he's played since June in any form of the game (apart from the tour match against the Windies) rather says it all.

Gidman is like one of those loan signings football teams make, who play really well when on loan but become pants once they get a permanent contract!

Electing to bowl is vindicated.

Denly has two of them.

What are your thoughts on this? Does he thibk he has an outside chance?
Well deserved. Not forgetting 600 plus runs too!
A couple more wickets for Stevo
These extra runs will probably cost us any chance of a win...
Denly back on in desperation!
Dickson for 20 and Milne 0 the men out
