Surely the Bookies should be in trouble too... Of course normal cases where players do match betting its not their fault but in this case, SunBet have deliberately gone out their way to almost tap up a player.
They will be in trouble for this - The Gambling Commission have launched an inquiry and SunBets will face a sanction for sure. One of the three stated aims of the commission is that gambling is conducted fairly and openly and they have fallen foul of this.
Sutton United have been told 2 thousand bets were placed on Wayne Shaw to eat pie. If each bet was a fiver, bookies have paid out £80k. (From Steve Scott, our sports editor at ITN)
How would Sutton United know how many bets had been placed on one of their games?
The whole thing was a put up job which shows Sutton in a bad light ...
does anyone seriously believe that ANY club would have a grossly overweight (I would say useless & fat but I am VERY p c) mid forties attention seeker on the bench as the goalkeeper substitute for an important, prestigious televised football match unless it was for some kind of stunt or for some kind of financial reward ?
The thing that annoys me is that the FA will show their teeth on this - can't sort out the detritus that has become our national game, but will go to town on fat man eating a pie

I do.
The National League does not operate like the Football or Premier League. Except for possibly York, all of the bottom half of that league are run by local chairmen who operate a strict P&L to turn a profit. Surprisingly none of that profit comes from ticket sales or sponsorship, it comes from corporate events, pitch hire and hospitality.
Why would a club like that waste money on 2 goalkeepers when they can have him as a last minute emergency and loan a keeper for one month if required?
There are lots of larger than life characters in the National League - Wayne Shaw being one of them - and it's a shame that he's got caught up in the lights of the media and had to resign.
It's instances like this that makes me grateful that the Premier League, Media and National League don't often interact, as the whole game would be sterile (although I suspect the majority of NL owners would disagree).
Not too bothered by the whole bet thing, but as I said on another thread, I think the bloke is an idiot for wanting to hog the attention for himself whilst the game is going on and his side are absolutely battling to try and get something. (And yes I know they had used all their subs up)
Well if this rings true, I really couldn't give a f***
Think it is true unfortunately mate.
Thing is I am surprised we held onto him this long TBH.

He'd been on the bench for every single game during their cup run, it's not as if they just put him there last night for a laugh.

Looks like he's in the squad tonight but probably won't be long before he's off. Nanetti gone to Cork too.

I would have thought if he was going than he wouldn't play? In case of injury? Or doing the decent thing and leaving with some dignity?

He's starting according to Twitter. Maybe the Sutton thing was bollocks.
It is an absolute disgrace that any bookmaker would offer a market such as this. The alleged pay out is chicken feed compared to the publicity they will have received and the bet itself was always going to lead to trouble. In fact, I would describe it as almost entrapment. There again, we shouldn't be surprised as it is rather in keeping with the publication of the same name.

Confirmed late last night, Adam Coombes signed for Sutton United.
If he knew about the bet, wouldn't NOT eating a pie (thus making money for the bookies) be just as bad as eating a pie and making money for the punters?
If one of our players ate a pie on the bench at youth level on a Sunday, he wouldn't be playing for the club again. Firstly it is disrespectful. It was a big night for Sutton and a gallant performance and this stupid prick has taken it all away from them. Secondly, if people condone this they encourage dishonesty in the game which can only seriously damage it. I applaud Sutton for getting rid.
Watch Sutton quite a bit , Wayne Shaw a genuine nice guy , has plenty of time for everyone at the club and the fans. My last vision of him Tuesday was grabbing some spotty local scrotes off the crossbar as they tried to snap it in the post match invasion melee and scuffles.Made an error of judgement with the pie thing, got carried away with the media interest, but without knowing the full facts think the club were maybe a bit hasty in letting him go , give him 2 weeks off, disappear , come back and sort it when the fuss has died down. The club is very well run though and maybe more will emerge in due course.
Welling fans out there may remember he played in goal for Sutton at Welling , 0-0 , in a Conference South play-off semi-final a few years back. His appearance on the bench is no publicity stunt , a very capable keeper.

How about we reduce the odds after each Stella you pour me?
All Bookies make money. Just wish I had been in on it!
sutton reserve keeper - gets caught up in the moment, bit of personal gain, the man has done a lot for sutton, and resigns.
