This is the problem with only recruiting British. At best there are maybe a handful of players with the quality we need who'd be willing to play in League One. Alternatively, you can look at what 1-2m got Hudds last year or Norwich this year in the Championship.
Karl Robinson says Charlton defender Harry Lennon is going nowhere.
Lennon has been out for almost a year with a groin injury, and is yet to play under the Addicks boss.
The 22-year-old was targeting a return to first-team training in pre-season, but suffered a setback in his recovery.
When asked whether Lennon, who has attracted interest from League One clubs this summer, would be sold before the transfer window shuts, Robinson said: “No, I’ve decided to keep him.
“We’ve got good competition in defence, and we’ve let one go so we’re very fortunate. It’s an area in the pitch that we’re very accomplished in - and they’re all good.

“Harry has been sent for external treatment. He’s been down at the training centre for the last two weeks.
“It’s been a very difficult period for him. We’ve got to make sure we’re there for him and try every eventuality possible to try to get him back on the pitch.
“We haven't given him a timescale (to come back from injury), but we just know we've got to get him back out there as soon as possible.”
Lennon, a Charlton academy graduate, was a shining light in the Addicks’ 2015/16 campaign which ended in relegation. He was a first-team regular for Charlton in the second half of the season.
But when Lennon returns to full fitness, he faces a tough task regaining his spot with Jason Pearce, Ezri Konsa, Patrick Bauer and Naby Sarr competing for places.
Or maybe the players he wants are being overpriced because people know we actually do have a bit of money.
Who knows - and I know this is radical, but maybe he's telling the truth.
Sorry if it doesn't fit the narrative but that's life sometimes.
Maybe he is. But is that good enough?
Footballs is a results business, off the pitch as well as on it. Would Robinson accept his players saying "well I tried to score but the other team had good defenders and a keeper in form"? No, of course not. Obstacles are expected and it is his and Meire's job to overcome them. To find a way.
Be that persuading Duchatelet to provide a bit more money, being better at negotiating, whatever. It's their job to make Charlton successful, not tell the fans why they couldn't do that.
And £1.5m to £2m for a striker who will make a big difference, that can do for us what Billy Sharp did for Sheffield United, is not (or should not be) out of the question. Are we in this league to win it, or not? If yes, let Duchatelet and Meire put their money where their mouth is. If not, then cut the excuses.
I guess this depends on who is paying the £1.5 to £2m. Are you offering to pay it?

I would not describe him as a "shining light" in our relegation season. I would describe him as "being forced into the first team because all our other defenders were injured or Naby Sarr."
I figure Lennon could desperately use a few months' loan at this point. That said, it's probably hard to loan a player while still injured, either because clubs aren't interested or because you want to supervise the players' recovery, a loaning club will not have his long term interest at heart. Personally, I'd probably have sold him and kept Terrell Thomas but I don't know that that is a 1:1 comparison.
He hasn't played in nearly a year, and that's after missing last pre-season as well with a groin injury. We have four good center backs ahead of him, plus Bowry and Yao seem to be rated. Given he's very left footed he can only comfortably play with Bauer or Konsa. It's good that we're keeping a bigger squad than usual but I'm very meh on him.

Stupid comment.
So a third division striker is ok at £2m just as long as someone else is paying for it?
I, personally, think that £2m (or even £1.5m) is irresponsible for a player that hasn't proved himself above the level where very few clubs can afford to sign him. If anything this kind of 'investment' is more similar to the 'value for money' that we got for the likes of a Naby Sarr or Polish Pete.
If he is not good enough for the Championship then if we go up we'll be stuck with him on wages that we would have to subsidise to move him on.
I find every bit as stupid to expect the club to sign players for these kind of sums of money as I do asking you if you'd be happy to pay for it.
Or maybe the players he wants are being overpriced because people know we actually do have a bit of money.

"That's life" all the time when Karl's around apparently. Always an excuse, never a positive end result. In my humble opinion, Tarbuck is full of shit:
"I'll be honest with you, I made some big mistakes at MK Dons where I was so eager to bring players in so soon," admitted Robinson. "I did it one year and I didn't bring in the type of player that aided the success of the club. And I learned from that very early on.
Your post earlier where you highlighted how he said 'usually I'm annoyed at my club etc' is actually the worst side of his management - we're gonna get another cringeworthy deadline day video where Karl wriggles around in front of the camera, bemoaning other clubs' behaviour, extolling all KM has done and concluding that we have some great prospects in Recco Hackett Fairchild and Dijksteel, KAG is like a new player etc
It's so formulaic it would put a Tom and Jerry cartoon to shame
Looks like h could be quite exciting to be fair, no idea how consistent he is though. Another left footer, not signed this one, obviously, be we do have an above average number at the moment.
Good signing, scored a screamer against us up there last season, Can see another being added as well, wouldn't be surprise me if Novak went to Rotherham.
"Another being added as well"? We aren't signing Ball...
For a billionaire businessman Roland does appear to be a bit thick sometimes. He is supposedly looking to sell the club but he wants an unrealistic price. Well listen here Douchbag if you shell out one million on Grigg and we win promotion Charlton 's value will probably increase by about ten million. So do everyone a favour including yourself and give Robinson the tools he needs to take us up .
To me that just reads as "Look how hard we're trying"
Love to be proved wrong but can't see us bringing in a 'big' name
Well, it is entirely possible that they are trying hard but it's not happening for the very reasons KR states - clubs are asking too much money in order to release players they are not that keen to sell. And if it that is the case, given the endless criticism they get can you blame them for trying to change the narrative?
The club really are damned if they do and damned if they don't these days. On one hand the club are constantly mocked for over paying for players and handing out too long contracts and the idea they have learnt lessons is also mercilessly mocked, but when they appear to be trying do do things differently, to get better deals for players and hand out more sensible contracts people are complaining they should spend more and tie players to longer deals.
Or maybe the players he wants are being overpriced because people know we actually do have a bit of money.
Who knows - and I know this is radical, but maybe he's telling the truth.

Facts:
1. Our owner is mega-rich
2. Very little of the Lookman windfall has so far been spent.
3. The FD has confirmed no issues with FFP
4. The club have declared that they want to mount a promotion campaign.
We have the money. We have the rhetoric. We now need the actions to match the rhetoric. To be fair, they've done ok so far this transfer window but a failure to buy a good striker could undo all that good work.
We can afford it. It comes down to intent.
And, by the way, no problem with your point of view. It's perfectly valid. But the "are you offering to pay it" is way below your usual level of debate.
I always liked the way we looked to sign players with Curbs and Varney. Under the radar, cards close to chest, keeping everything discreet.
Okay, today we have social media and someone's Mum knows the tea lady at the training ground ..... but come on Karl, just do the business and tell us about it once the player is signed up.
It's a poker game. Robinson is the player who talks a lot at the table, Curbs was the guy saying nothing.
It doesn't matter beyond PR which is all it is.
We'll see on 1 September who we have or don't have and can judge then how well he's been backed. Right now it's all talk for the media and doesn't mean anything when one CEO rings another and tries to make a deal.
I agree with KR that this is a strong squad if we stay free of injuries but that is unlikely as we have already seen.
Still expect to see a loan striker come in like the kid from Burnley. Ideal as doubt they will insist he starts every game.
Or maybe the players he wants are being overpriced because people know we actually do have a bit of money.
Who knows - and I know this is radical, but maybe he's telling the truth.

Or maybe because Duchatelet refuses to pay the going rate and leaves the squad building / negotiating to the very last minute, when prices are higher. Same story every transfer window.
Apologies if that doesn't fit / challenges your point of view either, its all opinion though eh ?

I wasn't involved in their conversation, but I know he doesn't support anyone and frequents different forums to get his 'facts'.
Therefore I assume it's BS.
Charlton, Rotherham and Walsall have enquired about signing Burnley striker Dan Agyei on loan #CAFC #RUFC #Saddlers… dlvr.it/Ph5rhq
In all honestly, he could probably do with a permanent move to kick start his career. Don't think he will ever be a regular with us.

Ball, 27, joined the Millers on a two-year deal in June after snubbing a contract offer from old club Fleetwood.
Charlton were in the mix for the former Manchester City trainee, and identified him as a target towards the end of last season.
But Ball chose newly-relegated Rotherham, and could line-up against the Addicks on Saturday.
Charlton chief Robinson said: “We were very close [to signing him]. We just got pipped at the final post so you win some, you lose some.
MORE: Robinson backs striker to come good for Charlton this season
“He’s not going to play against us - they’ll go with Jamie Proctor and Kieffer Moore up front. They’ll go with two strikers.”
When asked if it was frustrating to miss out on Ball, the Liverpudlian added: “No - we’ve got Ben Reeves!”
Ball, who scored 14 goals for Fleetwood last season, is likely to start on the bench when Charlton make the trip to Rotherham.
