I went into the message board for Nathan Thompson's club to see what they think of him.... to a person none will miss him and they say that although he was really good a couple of years ago, that his body is breaking down now, his performance is off, and he doesn't have 2 good years left.
He's 26, just standard bitter fans that he's leaving.
Where did the phrase "legacy player" come from as a matter of interest?
These are not players from another era or inherited from previous ownership as the term implies and any legacy they might leave at Charlton will be minimal or more likely negative.
They are overpaid, on long contracts and not very good but "legacy" ?

I believe Katrien used it in a Q&A to describe why we had such a mishmash of coaching staff.

Exactly. I use it slightly ironically but it is a handy term for players from previous managers. Sarr arrived FOUR managers ago and Watt FIVE.
We can now add players from the Slade era such as Ajose to the legacy list.

Will Sheffield United make Charlton Athletic an offer too good to refuse for Ricky Holmes? By cliveyoulton | Posted: June 01, 2017
Sheffield United are understood to be ready to make Charlton Athletic an offer that's too good to refuse and entice Ricky Holmes to Bramall Lane.
Charlton chiefs insist the club's best player is not for sale at any price and boss Karl Robinson is keen to sit down with the Addicks' player of the year in the next week to complete an improved contract.
But United manager Chris Wilder seems determined to get his man and is ready to try again for Holmes, who may be swayed by the lure of playing Championship football.
Robinson insists his main priority is to tie Holmes down to a new deal and he can only hope the club's owners don't accept a bid for the player - and that Holmes doesn't want to leave, 12 months after he slapped in a transfer request at Northampton Town prior to signing a deal at The Valley.

So he's already been sold for £2.40 and a box of chocolate cigarettes?

We all know the deal was all but tied up before the season ended but by dragging it out they hope to sell three more season tickets.

I though KR had already sat down & talked to Holmes BEFORE he went away on holiday - if he didn't then he's an idiot. This was the first thing that should have been done before any holidays / jamborees / freebies etc etc.

Cant trust this lot to run a whelk stall.
Of course they spoke to Holmes and his agent and no doubt to Reeves, Thompson and whoever else.
But speaking to them isn't signing a deal. The club would want them to sign ASAP but why should they if there are better offers possible from other clubs and from Charlton if they wait?
Robinson talk of early deals and not wanting players who didn't decide to come straight away was nonsense. He talks without thinking because he likes saying the things he thinks will make him sound popular and the Alpha male but he forgets that the rest of us don't buy it and will remember what he said 4 weeks ago even if he doesn't.
As someone said to me last night if he said what he was going to do when he joined ie speak to fans (and not with Tom Rubeshow as a minder) and speak to people who knew the club (not Robbie Fowler or any of this other name dropping mates) none of this would be a surprise to him but he bought into their lies and was happy to repeat them.
The thing with Holmes is that he is under contract. He can't go anywhere unless the club agree.
He didn't cost a fortune, so he can either sign an extension or play for what he's on now and walk at the end of next season. The risk he takes is that he's a year older and he might get injured. The offer he has now might not be there next year.
If they sell him it's because they want the money over promotion.

This is why it makes no sense for him not to have signed a new contact, assuming the club have actually offered him one.
The longer he stays on his contract the longer he has to wait for the extra money and, presumably, the signing on fee. I suspect that if we were serious about a take it or leave it he would agree to sign or, at least, negotiate a deal quite quickly. Even on a free there is no guarantee that he will get a big move next year - especially if he has an average season.

Ok, let say he's on £2k pw but wants £6k pw from Charlton. They have offered him £4kpw (all figures made up)
He could sign the new deal to be on £4k pw for another year or two or wait and see if Charlton will offer him more to stay or if another club comes in to buy him and offer him £6k or more. Maybe he already knows via his agent that Sheff Utd will pay him £6pw and he is using that a bargaining tool.
There is no reason for him to sign a deal with Charlton early as that is his bird in hand. He's waiting to see if he can catch the two in the bush.
Using the same numbers, we say, either sign the extension of play for the current contract and walk at the end. Now he's got no real leverage, and if he gets a serious injury or just sulks and plays like crap(see Watt, T), that shiny big deal disappears.

It's only an issue if Roly want the dosh.
Sure but as long as the £4k pw deal is on the table from Charlton he has a deal anyway. If Meire withdraws that deal then the club have one very annoyed player on their hands.

Don't disagree with any of that but it does suggest that we have not made him a take it or stay on your current money deal.
I would argue that if the numbers are anything like you are saying it might, just, work out best for us if we keep him on £2k a week for another year then let him walk - he will be another year older and if we want to keep him after that we can offer him the big money, assuming that someone else will pay him that, then.
He has had one good season with us and it was his only season at this level (or higher) and he is 30 (in a couple of weeks). With our track record I'm surprised we haven't offered him £20k a week for six years.
The worst, possible, scenario for him is that we do refuse to sell him and when he comes back to say he'll take the £4k a week we say our offer is, now, only £3k a week.
I know these numbers are all made up but it makes it easier to explain it.

With season tickets to sell, though, it might make more sense to tell him to sign it by, say 31st May, or he has to stay on his £2k for another year. And that's that! It would focus his mind, I imagine.
If he was 23 that wouldn't work but the biological clock is ticking!

That is the risk he and his agent take. As you say we could just say "tough, see out you last year on £2k pw" but that will piss him off and there is a bit of ego for Robinson and Meire involved here. Both want to be able to say "look, he signed an extended deal" for different reasons.
Or maybe they are just waiting for a bigger offer from Sheff Utd before they flog him.
KR says some of the players we are after are also wanted by clubs who were relegated to L1 last season and are bigger clubs than us in one recent interview if I am not mistaken....
