If you want to cut down on alcohol intake you could always buy beers with less alcohol in them as an alternative. There are some decent tasting pints out there these days with lower alcohol content
That's what I've done, I only drink Special Brew now.
I needed to get my blood pressure down from 180/110. One of the things I did was to stop drinking alcohol (wine, beer and whisky). 3 months later I've lost 2 st. and my blood pressure is back within a safe range.
I didn't intend to stop drinking altogether but I just don't feel inclined to start again. I feel much better for it and drink a glass of non alcoholic red wine now and again with food.

Funny man. It's all about personal choice and priorities. My family has a history of heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure. I've chosen to cut down on the things that were making me ill so I can be around for my kids and grand-daughter a bit longer.

Each to their own and can I tell you now I don't carry any change...
I've been dry for about a month now due to deadlines and exams. I'm done on Wednesday and I have 16 cans ready in the fridge plus a bottle of rum and a bottle of whisky! Watch out Canterbury!!!!!!
I once got legless, lost my wallet, felt dreadful the next day and so gave up for 7 weeks.
The reality for me was that not drinking were easy enough, but socialising without drink was impossible. I couldn't go to a pub and not drink, so just made excuses for not meeting people. I could cope at home, but out and about was useless.
I currently try not to drink other than Fri and Sat, but the warm weather is a killer for wanting a pint.
Good luck Canters on your rebirth and the OP on your attempts.
I have had a few heavy weekends of late so have decided to try and do a month dry for various reason but have now realised that I don't think i have gone more than 2 weeks with out a beer since turning 18.
Drinking has been a massive part of my social life weather it be boys nights out or couples meals with wine to just a few on a Sunday in the garden with family and of course football so I am quite looking forward to giving this a go to see what benefits it makes.
Anyone else done this before for Dry January or just like me decided to give it a go for a health kick? Any tips or thoughts?

Bit of advice for alternatives when you are out at the pub.... I have been tee-total (or near enough) for a long while now. And whilst my liver will be in great shape, my dentist wont say the same about my teeth. Coke / fizzy drinks fucks them - and that has always been my default when going out.

things people do to get out of buying a round
You starting boycotting to get out of your round!
Yeah but when these c**t* are gone i will be going for it big time and if that happens soon i expect you to resume consumption,in the meantime why dont you abstain until theyve gone, you have my full support
I love beer but don't really drink much any more. If you want a "sense" of alcohol with a (largely) non alcoholic drink, try sparkling mineral water, a dash (and wedge) of lime and some Angostura Bitter.
I don't drink much these days. I was a heavy drinker for probably 30/35 years, but recently even when I could have a skinful, I tend to only have 2 or 3 beers - I know what I'm going to feel like in the morning if I have too much. Added to that, I've had two tests in recent months which show my liver function is not good.

Did dry Feb this year and lost half a stone, felt good etc. Went out quite a bit as well and didn't really get tempted although had a couple of alcohol free beers at one evening out towards the end

That should hit the spot.
It really doesn't, but better than a pint of coke / orange and lemonade or whatever other crap that isn't beer

I've agreed I'm going to have a dry month of June. This will also help kick the fags which I only smoke after drinking.
I'm slightly worried as I am a near daily drinker, and that's why I am also keen to have some time off, prove to myself I don't need to drink to have a good time.
Don't intend giving the booze up long term (unlike the fags which I intend not to smoke again) but aim to keep it much less important.
Good Luck. I am actually doing it for the month of June, although I did start a week or two before. No Birthdays or football to worry about so should do it with ease, unless I win the Euro's tonight.

Have seen a specialist about arthritis. As well as that, he pointed out that my last two blood tests have shown raised levels in the liver function test. Has put the fear of god in me. I've been a daily drinker for some time now. Have not had a drink for a week and already feel better. I just hope my liver is OK
