Dry Month

I don't drink much these days. I was a heavy drinker for probably 30/35 years, but recently even when I could have a skinful, I tend to only have 2 or 3 beers - I know what I'm going to feel like in the morning if I have too much. Added to that, I've had two tests in recent months which show my liver function is not good.

Have seen a specialist about arthritis. As well as that, he pointed out that my last two blood tests have shown raised levels in the liver function test. Has put the fear of god in me. I've been a daily drinker for some time now. Have not had a drink for a week and already feel better. I just hope my liver is OK :(
How did you do it..I enjoy a good few reds every evening as a reward for my hard day's work, but it's becoming a habit. I'd like to dry for a week or so.
  • I went dry a month last year, I just stopped. Then I started again.
  • I've been dry for about 7 years. I found having a father with dementia whose careers ring you every night to come round helped...... but I wouldn't advise it. Don't miss it one bit though (I say dry, glass of Champagne at Christmas I still do).
  • forgot about this tread, think I done about 3 weeks or so but not the full month.

I've made attempts to cut down from time to time - but the amount creeps back up until the next attempt. The only way I can do it is by cutting it out altogether. I had about 6 months off a few years back but started again. I think this time is because I've got various, niggling, getting older ailments and have suddenly become aware of my own mortality.

I'm a real joy to be around at the moment!!
  • I've been off all this month. First Park Run in November took over a minute off my PB. It was the first time I'd done it without at lease 6 pints the night before. Then last Saturday I was over 2 mins slower! I didn't fall off the wagon though and will continue until the end of November.
My first drink will be at Newbury racecourse for (what we still call the Hennessey) or actually on the coach there.
I am a drinker, I drink every day but happily I can give up without any difficulty for a month or so whenever I want.

Same here, Having November as a dry month. Try to do one dry month a year and like you can happily leave it for a short time, but i do love a beer after a round of golf. Sometimes an orange and soda doesn't really do the job.

I am dry for November, I will do it because my wife doesn't think I can, proving her wrong is always a driver.
  • If anyone wants to stop drinking read / listen to the audiobook Alan Carrs easy way to control alcohol. Makes it so easy. I haven't had a drink for three months and I was a 4 pint a night minimum kinda guy before then. Totally changes the way you look at alcohol

  • But why stop has always puzzled me. I enjoy it, it’s sociable, it’s a relaxant. It’s poison we consume to support our life. As for health then it’s down to how much you drink...I’m still looking for that pub called Moderation. And then ask yourself do I really want to exist until I’m 134? I’m not saying getting pissed every night is the best advice but having a couple can’t do much harm unless your body can’t hack it.
  • Not as much as a poison as the shit food most of the country seem to stuff down their gob.

    Same here Solidgone.

Never smoked, never drank until I was in my late 30's, always excercised, eat extermely sensibly and don't drink during the day, even on holiday.

No spirits, can't remember the last beer I ad but enjoy my wine in the evenings and long may it continue.

    Hic
  • Stopped for October, wasn't looking forward to it but I did it and now (since beginning of November) don't drink during the week at all. However the other 'knock-on' effect from this, is, I've also cut down at weekends, without thinking about it, and now just a few glasses of red is all I have. Lost 1/2 stone in weight and feel so much better. If I can keep this going I will, but I'm not putting any pressure on myself and I'll just see what happens.
  • A few every day is really not a good idea.

If you (like me) find it hard to have just the one, try to minimise the days you drink. Out of 7 I do 3 days allowed 4 days not. Usually that’s Thursday, Friday, Saturday - but that can change if there’s an event in that week or just a particularly day.

I’d never want to cut it out completely, I’m a big red wine, scotch whisky and beer fan so for me it’d be too sad.
  • Doing dry November. Had an ice cold Heineken 0.0% after a round of golf on Sunday.
Was rather nice. Obviously not the real deal, but still refreshing and an OK substitute.
    Can't wait to December though...
Will however cut out weekday drinking and also not drink on a Friday or Saturday, unless we've got something planned (bbq, party etc.).
Previously, I've always brought a 6-pack home with me on a Friday after work.
Really do need to lose some weight, so have to cut down on the drinking.
I do love an ice cold beer though. Really, really do. And I can also drink more than one.

    So with you on this.
  • Misread this one as 'dry mouth'.
    What a let down...
  • I am dry for November, I will do it because my wife doesn't think I can, proving her wrong is always a driver.

Why be confrontational? Women like to be right, in fact many believe they are always right. You may as well enjoy a couple of beers and tell your wife that she got it bang on as usual. A bit of reverse psychology, everyone happy
  • Just over a week dry now. I have more energy and generally feel more positive. It's the evening - when I used to open the wine. I just feel so sensible :( I guess it will help get that balance with my manic depression but it's not much fun. Let's hope my liver function test returns to normal and the doc says I can have the odd glass.

    Brilliant!!.

Its been two weeks for me, I am sleeping better which is meaning that I no-longer have to have a little doze during the day, i'm sure that is due to the drink not my age.
  • Just one more week to go. This has been the easiest dry month I've ever done.
  • I have to do a lot of driving which in turn defines my drinking or lack of it and that has been the case for 34 years and counting.

I went 'dry' for Lent a few times when younger but in all honesty, for the reason given, it wasn't a hardship.

These days if and when I can I'll drink what I fancy which is normally beer, red wine and the very occasional whisky.

Chirpy does a nice drop if you're in his neck of the woods. On the occasions I can get there I'll have one in the pub and take some away.
