If the Northampton players had stood on each others shoulders I reckon they might have made the top of the Shard, they were big, I was itching for a headed duel between Da Silva and their 22, or their 2, but it wasn't to be, and when they had their first corner and rolled it along the ground my worries eased a bit. Northampton overloaded on Solly's side in the second half, and indeed their one inevitable worry inducing goal came from Solly's area of the pitch, but mainly he coped well and had yet another decent game overall. A Northampton fan said to me afterwards 'two poor teams' and I was too polite to respond, but Justin Edinburgh is a lucky boy to get the gig, because he seemed to have resources available but they didn't gel at all. Maybe the early sub hindered Northampton, but overall they were solidly beaten by the much better footballing side in Charlton. Indeed our players were much more comfortable on the ball than Northampton, had more pace, better skills, and good awareness, and a strong sense of playing like a team. There were a few individual moments, Kashi was exposed and beaten once in the game and da Silva had a couple of weak bits of play. Then again Kashi, along with JFC and very especially Clarke, were excellent in midfield where one or other of them would be there to do the work, or be there to springboard an attack. Very very good central midfield today. Da Silva had that run, which I have decided to call 'the Costa', where he nearly got through and scored (Solly had a Costa against Bristol Rovers), and he is a lovely young footballer, very much the real deal, pity he isn't ours. Another loanee Amos did a lot today to settle some worries about him, I haven't seen it but I don't think he can be blamed for Northampton's first goal scored in about 100 years. Pearce and Bauer dominated their central attack all afternoon. Josh times things well in terms of scoring the first goal, new contract, second minute, goal. Statement. Mind you Josh ought to have had three, one miss was pretty much a snatch at an open goal, but he did seem to have a bit of zest today and led the line as expected. Fosu is great isn't he? Twists and turns and suchlike, an absolute nightmare to play against I would imagine, and the Northampton defenders could barely contain him, but if Fosu was a nightmare for them, then Holmes was the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Holmes laid on the first, scored the second, and was virtually unplayable, his biggest opponent today if he had one, was himself. As an example to his teammates who seek a definition for effort and commitment, Holmes is your man. When Holmes and Fosu (and one would hope Marshall when he is fit) are on the field there is always a chance to unlock even a good and well organised defence. KAG with his pace and close control sometimes offers that option too. However back to Holmes who wasn't good simply to show off to his old club, but was good because he is good, and we have been seeing that effort consistently from him. For me Holmes was our best player, and that is saying a lot because they were all pretty good especially Billy Clarke. Clarke may be forgotten because of the two late JFC goals, but he had slightly the better game. I loved JFC's second goal obviously. It went something like Jake thinking 'is somebody going to get that damn ball I'm knackered. No? For gods sake I have to do everything myself around here. What?! No support? You don't expect me to run with it do you? FFS. I suppose I'd better score a goal then to save me legs'.
Really entertaining game. Was expecting a banana skin today (I know, typical Charlton fan pessimism) so was pleased when Big Mag got on the end of Ricky's cross after only a minute. As others have said, no bad performances from the men in red today. Love the little touches from Fosu and Kashi. After thinking Clarke was a bit anonymous against BR, he's been my MOM against the Pilgrims and again today. The player we've been missing, attacking midfielder who grafts and does the stuff that doesn't get the glory. Special mention for both KAG and Konsa, good cameos, Konsa should've won us a penalty, but even a poor ref didn't affect us today. This is a positive, as we can't do anything about the crap refs, we have to win despite them. And today we did. Robinson deserves plaudits today. Got it right. More importantly, as well as playing in an entertaining way, we looked like a team for the first time since before Roland. Robinson stands or falls on this - its clearly his team, but on today's showing, he's in credit from me. Now, keep it up!
Really pleased with the way this side is shaping up, great performance today. As others have said if we get another striker in & keep everybody fit I am sure we will be near the top of the table come next May.
Class. JFK take a bow for your second goal. Konsa was outstanding when he came on as was Grant. Nailed on penalty for Konsa. Clarke was magnificent but there were 3 or 4 contenders for mom today.
Getting the negatives out of the way first, I think Edinburgh set up Northampton all wrong, in the second half at 1-0 they were ridiculously open when they had 45 minutes to get back in the game, and we should have punished them earlier. I also thought we were a bit negative at 2-0, and then at 2-1 time wasting the corner when we hadn't even started the 5 minutes of added time
But on the positive side, we had some beautiful passing moves, which would have troubled most teams. Given some space on the pitch, we're lethal. Clarke was everywhere and looks a lovely footballer, while JFC really has an eye for a goal, I thought he was starting to look the part at the end of last season, and he's continued this on.
Will Reeves have to wait for an injury now to get in?
Maybe, difficult to change a winning side. Unless KR goes ahead with the Oldham away game irrespective of international call ups. Nice problem to have though.
Great win and glad for those that attended BUT it's a long season and the current squad won't last, the 3 teams we have played so far are I would expect lower table teams, next Saturday is a tough game.
Didn't attend today but having a beer now in celebration UTA
Even a half fit Holmes was too good for this lot. Great game and can't wait to see the goals again. Every player put a shift in. Could have scored at least a couple more from Fosu and Mag and as for the second goal, wow. Clarke and Holmes cute passes down the middle and then Holmes gets past the defender and slams it in. Effing brilliant.
Will Reeves have to wait for an injury now to get in?
Yes!!
Although coming home I was listening to Robbo on BBC London Radio and he was saying that we were missing our two marquee signings in Marshall and Reeves.
Interesting as Clarke I thought was our first choice target in that position, will certainly be a joke if he's dropped when Reeves is fit
4-1 was the score and it was a fair reflection of the game without being a fair reflection of the game.
Anyone that was there will probably understand why I say that but hopefully my comments will clarify for those that were not.
Charlton started strongly and Ricky Holmes broke down the left before putting in a cross which was forcefully diverted into net by the head of a diving Magennis. 1-0 Charlto and for a while it looked like it might be quite a few more -0 to Charlton. Northampton stuck to their task and gradually came into it more as the first half progressed. They had 3 or 4 lumps of BFG's size or bigger and the concern was that they would do us from a set piece of some description but we managed to contain them and a diving Amos got a vital right hand to a cross cum shot with Northampton players queuing up to slide the ball into an empty net had he not made it. 1-0 at halftime.
Second half Northampton came out like they meant it but we coped quite well defensively and looked dangerous if and when we were able to break. Around the hour RICKYYYYYYYY managed to place a clinical left footed shot into the corner eluding the grasp of a despairing keeper diving to his right. 2-0 Charlton. Prior to that Big Josh had put one in the Covered End when it looked easier to score and as one us old gits thought this is going to finish 1-1 or worse. Ricky settled the nerves against his old club though but, to their credit, Northampton weren't ready to lie down and pressed forward themselves and with 'the big lumps' one felt they had at least one goal if not more in them. Sure enough they eventually scored and continued to lay siege to our goal. Again though when we broke we looked dangerous and Ahearne -Grant was desperately unlucky to curl one just outside rather than just inside the far post. 90 minutes came and, even though I said it would be 5 minutes added on, I was surprised.
Enter Forster-Cakey who had impressed me all afternoon with the way he did the dirty stuff and he also played one or two beautiful balls one of which would have given Big Josh a one on one but for a lunging Northampton foot which diverted it out of his path. Ahearne- Grant made yet another run and cross and the ball came to JFC who almost seemed to dummy a shot before calmly placing the ball in the net over the top of the already diving goalkeeper. At 3-1 in time added on the pressure was off and JFC received the ball out on the right and curled one past the groping 'keeper into the top right hand corner which was virtually the last act and a fitting one.
4-1 reflected our superiority when we were fully 'on it' but until time added on there was that nagging feeling they would equalise.
We played some lovely stuff though at times and long may it continue.
They owed us that result against Northampton, after the shambles of the away game in march last season, and Holmes scoring makes up for the abuse he got that day from the home fans singing "you bought the wrong one"
He said: “We have two or three players that we really like and we have to work really hard to try and get them over the line. That’s us and the opposition as well because maybe the other team sees us as a threat and will not want to sell them to us.”
Is it me or does one of these players seriously sound like Will Grigg?

1st game this season for me. I went feeling pesamistic and left feeling optimistic. 1st time I've seen Clark play and he looks like a very good signing, fosu looks good and Kashi is different class. Now Roland give Robinson a couple more players and we might just have a chance. If not just f#$#I off
